The staircase for me is fine, but just stairs. One of the best flights of stairs I’ve ever seen, but just stairs. Better than those of Noto - yes. The story is that in 1606 village elders wanted there to be access to the Old Town up on the hill from the lower town and thought to build stairs that took 10 years to complete. My story is that I took 20 minutes to travel 2 km in a winding convoluted trip orchestrated by my GPS and ended up adjacent to the stairs on a narrow one way street blocked by a huge cement block at the foot of a steep hill. My only way out was to reverse back up the hill, driving standard with not enough room to open my door. To me, that’s a better story. The fact this is the # 1 attraction in this storied city is absurd and tells you all you need to know.

With its 142 steps, adorned with plants and decorated with ceramics in the rise of the steps, it is the wonder and the monument that connects the lower part to the upper part of Caltagirone. It was built in 1606 and is over 130 meters long. Unmissable
visit.

Caltagirone is one of the jewels of Sicilian Baroque. Less famous and rich than Noto, Ragusa, Sciacca and Modica, but just as interesting. In particular, the choice to decorate the staircase with one's own ceramics is highly suggestive.

The staircase has 142 steps and these are all covered with ceramic tiles. There is no other option in the capital of ceramics.
So it is a very long staircase (130m) that is made more special by the tiles and where you have a very nice view from above.
On the stairs there are nice shops here and there that sell ceramics, ideal for taking a break!
This was not the case with us, but sometimes they still put flowers on the stairs that represent a figure or something, that must also be very beautiful.
We thought it was impressive and worth the effort to climb the stairs to the top.

The staircase is characteristic due to the decorative tiles that decorate it. I don't know if the staircase is only temporarily decorated with pots of geraniums (bad idea). Seen from below, the vases (although effective) cast a "shade" on the steps as well as dangerously obstructing the passage of tourists! Once you reach the top of the staircase, the church. It was 11.00 am and the church was "naturally" closed.

We visited this city on our way back to the airport. The city itself is worth a visit among the baroque churches, ceramic museum, park, staircase but it is one of the dirtiest cities we have seen in Sicily. The staircase is also full of weeds and dirt. Maybe the municipality could do something

If you're driving through this time to/from Villa Romana del Casale, it's worth a quick stop while getting lunch/dinner in the town, but I would not go out of my way to come here. Stairs are kind of pretty, but the tiles are so small, they're a bit hard to see, and so many people doing IG photoshoots here. I would rate this higher than the Spanish Steps, but not by much.

We went out of our way to see these steps and pleased we did. The effort to decorate the steps is amazing and you are certainly rewarded with the beauty of the ceramics.
Still maintained today, it was clear the residents are proud.
Definitely worth a visit.
