Well worth visiting in addition to El Castillo cave. (see full review for that particular cave) I would thoroughly recommend Cueva Las Monedas to all visitors - especially those visiting Altamira. With the Puente Viesgo cave complex visitors can experience real caves, which you will not get @ Altamira unless you enter the Altamira Draw, held on Friday mornings, with only 5 names being draw to see the real Altamira cave. For anyone interested in prehistory, anthropology, archaeology; or just interested in learning about amazing places, then Las Monedas is a must see.

We came across these caves almost by accident. For 3 euros it's a must see if you are in the area. Lovely walk from puente Visego to the caves. Inside a guided tour; although in Spanish the guide translated bits and pieces. Cave drawings, stalagmites and stalactites were fascinating.

We went here during our kid's nap time, while grandparents watched them. It was a nice grown-up escape! We drove there and parked in Cuevas del Monte Castillo- Aparcamiento. There are around 50 parking spots. There's a gate across the road so you can't go any further so it's on foot from there.
We didn't realize the walk to the cave was about 10 minutes from the place where you pickup your tickets (we had bought them ahead of time) so we hustled to it, given that we had bought tickets to this cave first. We ended up getting there 1-2 minutes late and were calling into the cave (it was a metal-bar door that was locked) but no one responded and it was pitch black. Turns out, even though we were late, we were still there before the guide was, who showed up about 3-5 minutes later, no one else with him. Prior to his arrival, I wasn't sure if we should walk back to the ticket center to get help so I'm glad he showed up.
Despite our delay in getting started, the cave was amazing. Of the two caves, El Castillo & Las Monedas, this one was our favorite. Perhaps it was our guide, perhaps it was what we saw or perhaps it was because we were the only people in our group - I'm not sure. But I loved all the beautiful stalactites & mites, combined with the amazing history. We saw so many cool drawings on the wall and our guide, who claims his English isn't great, spoke beautifully about all the things we were looking at. There were less groups/people overall in this cave so we could linger a little longer at each spot

Both caves are great. El Castillo has more cave paintings. But if you're going to do one, you should do both. The guide for Las Monedas said the tour is basically just showing off the cave itself (stalactites, stalagmites, columns, curtains, etc.) with a few 'paintings' near the entrance. I think fewer people see Las Monedas. But it's there, it's cheap, it's easy. So do it.

There are a number of caves in the area and to avoid disappointment book in advance. This is easily done on line. There are two caves on this mountain and it's worth visiting both. This cave name literally translates to cave if the money. This us because if the small horde if coins found.

Found the site based on restaurant rec, worth the drive. Air did get cooler as we descended, our clue was when tour guide put on parka mid-July. Wonderful explanations, insight and time permitted to explore. There is nothing to compare to-the up close and personal vs. the replica or inaccessible caves of other sites. Please visit and support this national treasure.

Sister cave to El Castillo. Las Monedas is also open for a 45 minutes guided tour, which is in Spanish. The cave offer spectacular ancient cave art. Las Monedas has more stalactites and stalagmites than El Castillo, and very fine small size cave art. You will explore about 500 m into the cave, and the cave art is breathtaking. Unlike in Altamira you see the genuine art rather than a replica. Highly recommended to book in advance since the visitor number is restricted on the tours.

A must must must do... we went online planning to go to the Castillo caves and there were no slots available... looked at another few caves and the same and then found slots here. So glad we did what you'd think is second best. It's incredible... loved the labyrinth of walkways we were led down, the formations and the 6 paintings we saw. There are 32 in total and a whole lot more cave but you are only given a taster. No pictures allowed.... the guide was wonderful. A note, you have to be there 30 minutes before your slot for a few reasons; car parking could be tricky... we were in the second slot of the day and it was getting that way... another is there is a walk up to the ticket desk where the Castillo cave is, then a ten minute walk to the Las Monedas to meet the guide. We were a 5 minutes llate due to our little one having an accident on route, but they waited for us thankfully. Didn't need sweater after running most of the route with my little one in my arms... oh, and the price is incredible too at 3 euros an adult!

A good addition to touring El Castillo cave. A beautiful pale cave. The main reason to visit are the many calcium salt formations of different types but the charcoal horse and (smiling!) deer are the icing on the cake - simple, elegant and moving.

Hi. I'm staying in Santander and can't quite figure out what bus goes from SAntander to El Castillo/Puente Viesgo. Where do I catch it in Santandar and does it run frequently? Also, are the restaurants closed then during siesta or can I catch a bus during siesta? Thanks!

Is the cave very claustrophobic?

No! The walkways are wide, have railings to hold, the guide navigates you around any puddles or water. There are huge, expansive rooms to view. I remember only one ledge that was low and near my head, but I was able to swerve around it. This is one of the most fascinating, unspoiled experiences that our family experienced in all of Spain-and my husband is from Spain. That one can see this up close for so little money was truly marvelous to me. Enjoy your time-but bring a jacket, it's cold underground!

Are there any tours to visit many caves in one or two days?

It's easy to visit El Castillo and Monedas in one day. Booked the two an hour apart, gives enough time for the tour and to walk between the two :)
