The walk from Urdon to Tresviso is one of the most famous in the Picos de Europa, ranked with many people alongside the Cares gorge walk. It has great historical interest as it is the track that used to be taken by the postman to deliver mail to Tresviso which is one of the most isolated villages in the Picos. Tresviso was snowed in for one month last winter and had helicopter drops of supplies. The walk can be hot and crowded in the summer and I decided to do it a month ago when the weather was good for walking ( about 15 degrees). To start, most people park at Urdon, which effectively consists of one house. There is parking directly opposite the house and more spaces on the right hand side of the road a few hundred metres on towards Potes. These are probably a better bet in the summer as the parking close by the walk is on a tight curve on a busy road.
The walk starts as a fairly gentle amble along the banks of the river Urdon for about a kilometre before crossing the river and starting to go fairly steeply uphill. After short climb up a valley it tracks left and zig-zags up another one before climbing steeply up the left hand side to the second valley to reach the main series of large zig-zags up the hill. This bit, the Balcon de Pilatus, has truly spectacular views and places to stop and contemplate them. After completing this series of zig-zags, the track flattens off and crosses pasture land before a few final zig-zags and the arrival at Tresviso, where there is a bar that the owner tells me is open all the year round. The return is then by reversing the route up. Other routes down are possible but they are either long and relatively safe or require a lot of mountain walking experience as they are steep and exposed.
The walk involves 830 metres of climbing and takes ( depending on fitness and stops) anywhere between an hour and a half and three- four hours to get up. The sign post at the bottom says three hours and this is probably reasonable for most people.

Excellent walk from Urdon up to the village of Tresviso. Good path all the way but steep in parts with great views. It took us just under 3 hrs including a couple of stops on the way up and around 2 hrs on the way back. Bar in Tresviso serves food as well as cold beer !

A steep zig zag slog of 3.5 hours or more to the village of Tresviso (plus return route!) but very enjoyable. Great views (weather dependent!), with griffon vultures flying around.

This route came highly recommended and summarised as ‘a tough hike up, but well worth it’. The hike was quite a slog, but we were lucky enough to be doing it in an unseasonably cool June. In hot weather, this would have been a real test of my endurance. The challenges come if, like me, you are prone to vertigo. Around every bend is a view to make you gasp. In places I clung to the inside of the path and kept my eyes down. Reaching the beautiful village of Tresviso is such a relief and the cervesa and patatas fritas in the bar makes it curiously worthwhile! The walk down is a bit skiddy (mostly loose stones) and scary or exhilarating view-wise. A great adventure. Glad to have done it.

Great route with variety and a good workout too. Each corner turned provides another postcard picture. Wonderful.

As all the previous reviews , I thought this was a great walk with stunning views of the Picos . From the car park in Urdón the ascent took me 1hr 40mins - it was steep but nothing dangerous or vertigo inducing. The path is obvious all the way, wide and very safe. Take lots of water and sun cream if it's hot and get there early if you need to park your car (I got there at 8:00 and there were 3 other cars - when I got back down at 12:00 there was no space left )
