I highly recommend a trip up to Abel Tasman and surrounds when visiting the South Island. It really is a hidden gem! I had honestly never heard of it, but business brought us to Nelson so we thought we would check it out. Well worth the drive from Christchurch. Reminded me a little bit of the Caribbean apart from the... More

Lots of people hiking the trail when we visited. We took Wilsons cruise boat and got off for a short walk before rebounding later.

Fantastic scenery, well groomed trails, lots of camping sites and a ton of very young and fit hikers remind you that you are getting older.

I went down from Totaranui until Anchorage, stayed in Abel Tasman 2D1N, and staying the night in Awaroa Hut. I think the track from Totaranui until Awaroa Lodge (30min after the Hut) is the most beautiful one. It has beach, forest, viewpoint (make sure you check the Skinner one!) and the lodge is a great place to chill. I don't... More

Only accessible by foot, kayak or water taxi, the ATT is a great way to spend 3 hours or 3 -4 days. Walk through native bush, listen to bird song & enjoy stunning vistas at every turn of the track. In the off season it is easy to water taxi in to one of the huts and do a short... More

Abel Tasman National Park was fantastic. Trip of a lifetime and met amazing fellow travellers along the way from all over the world. Be prepared and plan carefully so that you have everything you need for this trek. Just do it, you will love it.

We walked in 3 days (2nights in a tent) from the starting point to Totoranui. From there we took the aquataxi to take us back. The walk was impressive, so much trees and forrest (and nice beaches). How is it possible? Really amazing!

the most stunning coastline, easily walkable, swimmable, kayak-able, and generally in pretty clement weather.

I did a day hike in the park by myself, it was definitely the best one I did in NZ, and it was raining. Try to pack light so you can profit from the views better since you have to walk 1-3 hours between locations.
