Lovely church

A well cared for church with a fascinating history. Good to see the Romanesque architecture with little later alteration. Interesting misericords and good information boards about the Gilbertine order.

A lovely church with an interesting history
Jun 2021
Set in its churchyard and overlooking farmland, this is a lovely place. It is worth walking round the outside of the church first before going inside. Don't miss the ledge on the outside wall that was used to store the village coffin when not in use.

All that remains of the Gilbertine Priory Church is the nave of the original church must have been big and impressive. It is an impressive Norman building which was restored in the C19th. The Temple Moore altar canopy is impressive. The medieval misericords are great fun.

Fascinating

Sometimes the buildings that show their scars are the most interesting. Our daughter showed us around the Roman Fort site at Malton and we discovered this little Gem. Reading the potted history is like watching someone name drop! I recommend taking a good look at the pictures on the back wall. Sanitiser and toilet available. Loved the spider catching equipment. Excellent! Also recommend a stroll along the road to the site of the old Roman Fort and Castle, then a bite for lunch in the Old Lodge Garden.

Staying local we were on a walk when we stumbled in the back of the church.
The children had a look round why I peeked through the door with 2 dogs. As we were leaving we were told we could all explore including the dogs.
The children completed a quiz about Angels and Saints in the stain glass windows which was a lovely surprise for a local small church. Glad we stumbled upon it, very pretty and some lovely carvings

Only a small church but full of interest. The organ was of particular interest to me as a musician. Visiting the Priory has sparked my interest to find out more about the Priory

A lovely local church. All events we have attended have been very warming, children of all ages and all noise levels have always been welcome. The reverends I have met have been so nice. The church and surroundings are beautiful.

Interesting if not stunning

A real feeling of solitude and history but so much of the medieval priory is no more! Worth a visit but not a big detour.
