About
Discover a fascinating display of life, culture, and industry dating from the pre-historic period to the present day. There is something for everyone at Congleton Museum. The family friendly exhibits contain; six coin hoards, a medieval log boat, bronze age weapons, and so much more. Situated behind the Town Hall, in the old police station, the museum uses relief maps to illustrate how the town has grown and changed over time. Using interactive displays, figures from the past tell stories about what life was like in Congleton during times of war, revolution, and disease. Key themes and events such as the English Civil War, the textile industry, and the First and Second World Wars are interpreted though the museums extensive collection of art, photographs, and objects.

We had great fun escaping from Congleton Museum's first escape room!! We recommend taking on the challenge, which is suitable for children and adults alike. If you've never been to an escape room before, this is a great taster of what to expect, no prior knowledge required. The experience is available until 3rd November 2024, so take your children for some half term fun, only £10 for upto 8 people.

The museum is run by friendly staff , who are happy to chat and help explain exhibits. Very interactive with costumes figures dressed in outfits from the time . Voices to choose which tell you about different eras along with displays screens and examples . Covers the civil war , Roman coins hoards, local industry history and congleton history. Small gift shop at end .

I visited during lockdown when I could only visit by appointment but the volunteers there were so incredibly generous and helpful. As I whizzed through the main body of the museum it looked brilliantly set out and very interesting so I resolve to be back when we can visit properly. Thank you everyone there!

After visiting Congleton numerous times for holidays we had never visited the museum. A great small museum that they couldn't get any more in if they tried. So muc interactive material. We spent nearly 3 hours in here which is free with a donation box. Staff at entrance very friendly helpful & with lots of information.

A really good example of what a small (very small!) museum can be with good planning, imagination and dedication.
The exhibits were very well laid out , well lit and well-and described. The coin hoards are amazing!
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
I would highly recommend a visit if you are in or near Congleton.

We called in on a quiet Thursday morning. We had a short time slot and were greeted by a volunteer who made it her purpose to introduce the museum and tell us in detail about the layout. I only really wanted to see the Knutsford and Malpas hoard but got not get a word in edgeway so had to waste quite a time listening to her speech. Once we were allowed our own time the first thing that you noticed was a looped soundtrack to a video explaining how the hoards were discovered. This completely overpowered the room and made it almost impossible to concentrate on any of the information boards. Once we had looked at the hoards we mooched around the other exhibets. It is only a small area and the soundtrack kept impeding on your enjoyment of reading about other areas of history in the town. There were a number of exhibits that covered the information boards making it difficult to get the full picture. It is so close to being really good. Just reduce the looped noise, move some of the exhibits so the information boards behind can be seen and it would make all the difference.

Small, but very interesting look into the history of the town. I am a first generation American with dual citizenship for the US and England, and my parents grew up in Congleton. I visited with my grandparents and it was interesting because they remembered some of the events that were mentioned in the exhibits. I loved learning more about my past. One of the staff members even took the time to look up one of our ancestors in the database and we learned some more about him- that was really nice considering we just walked in. Staff was very friendly. Hope to take my kids someday.

Appalling. One room with perhaps twenty exhibits. Not worth the effort of visiting from Manchester. It genuinely is the worst museum I have ever visited and does not deserve to use the description of museum.

The museum is very small and offers a history of Congleton. It has some interesting information and you can see how Congleton has changed over the years. The staff are extremely friendly. It's free to go around.

This is most interesting, particularly with regard to the pre-historic history of the area and items discovered locally such as the Neolithic wooden boat, various implements and hoards. Well worth popping in for a visit. There are even nice little things to buy from the charming people on duty behind the desk. Loved it all.
