This is one of the must-dos in any stay in Martinique: hiking the Caravelle peninsula!
First of all, go one kilometer further on the dirt road to the second barriers (otherwise it's 2 km more in the heat).
We took the long trail: 9 km announced, 12 km on the phone. 4 good hours of effective walking.
A must do starting with the lighthouse (in the other direction, the climbs are steep in the sun). After the orientation table, a long passage along the windy coves which is beneficial in relation to the heat (no shade).
The climb towards Caracoli Point becomes difficult and the descent is not easy.
But at the end the reward: the beach
Treasure Bay. Deserted beach (no houses in sight in the bay, only hikers frequent it). Translucent and very warm water with fish passing around you. What a joy after 3 hours of walking. We don't want to leave.
The return via Château Dubuc crosses the mangrove with nice passages.
Glad to have this route!

We did the yellow loop (small) pushing to the Trésor beach for a very popular swim in a “wild” environment. Top !
A little less than 2 hours in total walking.
On the other hand, when returning in the afternoon to Tartane, many restaurants were closed...

What a beautiful place.
We did the big tour in 3h30 without straining and enjoying the view.
The car park is at the end, you have to take the path which is not paved otherwise you have to go 1km more (we got fooled...)
To do absolutely

At the base we left for the short 1h30 hike. However the path was not very interesting apart from the mud and the swamps. So we continued on the long path along the coast. Duration 3h30 without making the detour to the tip. Sometimes difficult route with mud, wild paths and oppressive heat. Hiking with a 9 year old child. Provide 4L of water for 2 adults and a child, and above all something to eat and very good shoes. Difficult path to get there with the car. We parked in front of the restaurant so as not to damage the rental car. Magnificent landscape but requires a lot of effort and energy for little athletes like me.

Very nice hike trail at Caravelle. I did the full route by myself, in Jan 2020. The hike is about 4 hours (including breaks). The trail was clearly marked and maps/signs on every crossroads. Basic trekking shoes / sneakers are needed. Plenty of water (1,5-2 litres) needed.
It is best to go clock-wise (Take the left at the beginning). There is an amazing beach at the end of the trail, perfect white sand.

This area is simply stunning and a must visit. Ideally, I would plan an entire day to spend on the peninsula. The drive out is also quite beautiful. In addition to the Chateau and nature preserve, there is a nice town, Tartare, where you can stop for a meal and a swim on your way in or out. When driving, the map looks as though you can drive all the way out to the pointe, these are actually just walking trails so I have provided some help with planning your day below.

Most of the hiking/walking is on pressed gravel or old pavement, some of the inclines are decently steep making this a moderate hike. I would recommend a light hiking shoe (preferable) or sandal with serious tread. I hiked in sporty flip flops (we weren't planning on such a walk) and it slowed me down a bunch and wasn't too safe. Bring a camel back or similar water system if you can. My husband and I are relatively active, however, I am 4.5 months pregnant, and for me the smaller loop was just enough of a workout, but not too strenuous. Anyone with mobility or health issues would have trouble with all parts of the peninsula. We hiked the smaller loop (1.5 + hrs) up to the watchtower and went to the chateau (1+ hrs). The watchtower was closed on Sunday. There is no water available at the watchtower, but there is a small gift shop at the chateau with water and snacks. I would plan an hour for the chateau. The self guided tour was 5 euro each and well worth it. Gorgeous pictures from there, but again, some steep inclines and loose footing. We missed out on the full loop (3.5 hrs) which takes you to some really secluded beaches simply because we didn't plan enough time. There are no real restaurants out there, so pack a lunch. I would suggest planning about 6 hours to do the full hike and chateau plus time for relaxing on the beach and breaks. Even more time if you plan to stop in tartare. Enjoy!

I like everything about Caravelle. Wonderful, almost not contaminated nature, authentic villages, a lot of places where to eat, splendid (clean) beaches with few people.

We rented a house on the Presqu'ile de la Caravelle and used it as a base to explore the island. It was a very convenient location, as it was only about 40 min from the airport and 2.5 hrs to the far north or far south of the island, making both accessible. The peninsula itself is cute, residential, and normal seeming. There were really pretty beaches frequented by local families, not too many tourists at all. There was also Chateau Dubuc to see and several hiking trails.

There are several walks around the Caravelle peninsula. Two begin at the end of the road, one is long and the other short. We chose the short one up to the Lighthouse. It was an easy uphill walk of about 1/2 hour to the top with lovely views as the reward. We did not visit the ruins of the Chateau but that would have been another 1/2 hour one way to there. Or you can take the longer walk around the end of the peninsula that would incorporate all the sites in about 4 hours. The parking at the end of the road can be crowded. There are no facilities so stop in Tartane for supplies and a bathroom before parking. Bring lots of water although most of the walk to the lighthouse is shaded.

I loved this so much. The hike around the peninsula shouldn't be missed. You get to see the rocky coastline with its crashing waves, and walk through a mangrove swamp. The trail is very easy to follow.

Towards the beginning of the hike, you can take a side trip to see the lighthouse. I'd highly recommend it. I saw a few people look at the trail (it's a mild uphill grade) and pass it by. You'd miss out on a gorgeous view.

You'll follow the coastline along the craggy rocks for most of the hike. It will turn into a mangrove swamp. There are wooden walkways through the swamp, so you never get muddy. You'll come across a beautiful beach, perfect to take a rest at. Continue on to the chateau ruins.

It's a full day, bring food and plenty of water. You'll need more water than you'd think. I wore hiking shoes, and I was glad to have them. You'd be ok with sturdy sneakers, but don't attempt this in flip flops. It's a real hike.

I did have one concern. There are poisonous trees on the peninsula, which have been marked with red rings. You aren't supposed to touch them, or even walk under them in the rain. There were sections of trail that were completely overhung with these trees. If it were raining, I'm not sure how you could avoid walking under them. Probably best to save this hike for a dry day.

I'm so glad I hiked this, I'd recommend it for anyone going to Martinique.
