About
Unfortunately, due to necessary Corovid-19 counter measures Saltburn Cliff Tramway is closed to the public until further notice. We do not know, at this juncture, how long this will be for and will keep you informed of any developments. On behalf of all the staff on the Tramway please stay safe. Saltburn Cliff Tramway is the oldest water balanced funicular still in operation in Great Britain. Come and visit us in the new season for a genuine piece of Victorian nostalgia. In a full year following our refurbishment we have worked hard to improve the visitor experience and we are delighted we have been awarded the VisitEngland Quality Rose Marque for 2019/20.

The Staff where extremely friendly and made sure this was an enjoyable experience for us, they where happy to answer our questions and made sure we had a comfortable ride up to the top. We brought our dogs onto The Cliff lift at no extra charge and they helped accommodate by giving us extra room around us as we have a rescue dog who is nervous around other people. The Cliff Lift is very affordable and is a lovely experience for anyone, the inside of the carriage is very well maintained and was spotless - the views of the sea, sand, and people below is very picturesque and no matter the weather allows for a view of the entire surrounding area that is sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face. The ride is surprisingly smooth and steady, while the Clift Lift is not always open it is very well maintained and is closed when repairs are needed to ensure it is safe, considering it is over 100 years (being built in 1884) the spotless condition it is in and how well maintained the Cliff lift still is (especially while remaining extremely affordable) is a testament to those who run it. I 100% recommend you give it a go if you are in Saltburn.

The Saltburn cliff tramway has to be one of the finest sights in Saltburn. Steeped ( sorry for the pun!) in history, unfortunately at this moment in time the trams are redundant due to the pandemic. Even so, it’s still worth visiting and having a read up on the journey through time that these wonderful trams have taken!

Saltburn Tramway Update on Spring Opening hours.

This is an unusual way of doing this, but Redcar and Cleveland Council have a major IT problem so we can not publish as normal at the moment.

We were hoping to reopen, after the winter maintenance period, this weekend and further weekends before we open fully from the beginning of April 2020.

However due to adverse weather conditions, not least approaching Storm Dennis, and other technical issues we have delayed weekend openings until Friday 21 Feb 2020. Once our IT is fully operational we will update social media formally and in more detail.

Many apologies for any inconvenience caused.

We used it in the late summer last year.

It's a great little ride, giving some good views. the queues can be a little busy at the end of a sunny day. But do you know what, its saves the walk up the hill and you get some good views.

Just make sure you get a ice cream to eat while you wait.

Great little Tramway... best wishes for next season.

It's one of the attractions of Saltburn but at the moment it's closed. There's a notice saying that they can't open due to covid regulations. It's a shame - the similar lifts at Scarborough are open now with safety guidelines in place.

Dear Mark170974 Can I apologies for your disappointment at the tramway not being open on your recent visit. We are keeping our websites and Trip advisor uptodate with the latest information and will continue to do so until the completion of our £500,00, refurbishment is complete. There are notices Around Saltburn informing of our free daily shuttle bus service every 10 minutes from the Tramway top Station to bottom of Saltburn Bank in front of Vista Mar and back. We look forward to welcoming you aboard when we re-open.

this has recently gone through a refurbishment and looks good, \i think we paid £ 1.10 for a one-way ticket and it was a bit of a novelty the guys selling the tickets were obviously very proud of it and willing to chat about the tramway

Sadly, while this funicular was refurbished a couple of years ago, the actual workings have been neglected and are currently in the course of being fully repaired. This wonderful mode of transport will be up and running by the end of the summer (if not sooner) and is always a treat to include in a visit to Saltburn-by-the-Sea. If you can't wait until it is repaired - pop over to Scarborough - they have two funicular railways!

Thank you for your comments. Work continues with our £500,000 refurbishment of the Saltburn Cliff Tramway. With the trams back on the tracks waiting for safety certification work, so in the meantime we are laying on 2 free shuttle buses for visitors. The replacement, free shuttle bus service will operate from 10.30am to 6pm on Saturday and Sundays 21st & 22nd and 28th & 29th July. The shuttle service will be available every 35 minutes and will be accessible from Hobb Hill Car Park, Station Street Bus Stop, Top Station of Saltburn Cliff Tramway, Marine Parade and Bank Foot Bus Stop at the bottom of Saltburn Bank. The shuttle service is also dog friendly so even our four-legged friends can see the sites of Saltburn easily! Saltburn Cliff Tramway is the oldest water balanced funicular still in operation in Great Britain. The Saltburn Cliff Tramway links the town of Saltburn with the only remaining pleasure pier on the whole North East and Yorkshire coast. We look forward to welcoming you aboard soon
