Really enjoyed this of the beaten track experience. Went by car to the "parking space" right by the river. The last 400m was quite rough and narrow but most cars will manage.
Then walked about 1km on the other side of the river, upstream to various nice cool pools. There are picnic tables on the way there and easily to walk on a well maintained path. However nothing else is there except nature. Very nice on a hot summerday!
The waterfall/dam was dry today (july29) but still a lot of nice pools.

A lovely place and we (including the kids) loved swimming in the shallow river. A snogging couple showed up for a while - I think they were hoping to get us to move up river but I think the happy shrieks from the kids jumping, swimming and finding tadpoles and frogs was enough to send them down stream!

Finding this place wasn't easy and the coordinates given by another traveller sent us to someone's house.

There is a car park near the lake here: Parcheggio masso delle fanciulle
Saline,Saline di Volterra Province of Pisa.

Don't turn down the Lancaia road like we did - it's all uphill and treacherous. Luckily the kids were asleep or it would have been sick city!

Directions: you're better off heading along SP27, to SR439 and turning down Strada Communale dells Macie. It's a much shorter drive to the car park.

We tried to find a path from the car park but found it easier to walk along the river (mainly pebbles, sandals are best, very slippery with flip flops!). We then came upon a very nice German family jumping from the rocks into a pool that was deep enough for us.

We also found a spot to have our picnic. It's all a bit natural so don't expect national trust type areas to picnic in.

The Berignone forest is an unexpected place. Roads, paths, meadows, forest, streams. A somewhat magical place in the heart of Tuscany, crossed by motorbike and on foot. Must see.

A beautiful spot in the heart of mother nature. The silence is breathtaking and swimming is awesome. Unfortunately more and more people find there way to this place.

We were with 2 small kids, (3,6) and really enjoyed. After a short walk you reach the river and you can walk along it. There are few pools along the way to go in. In the end of the walk there is a nice large place to swim and places to sit, rest, picnic with cool people. I'd definitely recommend.

This place is very hard to find, we asked several people, including our hotel (Relax Hotel Aquaviva) and they couldn't tell us where to park our car. So we were told to drive to Pomorance (35 minute drive). There we saw several cars along the road. We stopped and found a walking road leading to a river. We passed a great afternoon swimming :)

You have to go to Volterra first to buy a 1/15000 map. Volterra is a classic Italian hilltop town probably worth a visit in its own right. We then drove to Mazzolla to start a walk.... Don't! It is about 12 houses and nowhere to turn around. Turn left before Mazzolla and follow a dirt track into the forest and park at a picknick site. Best to stay walking on the tracks as the horse trails and forotpaths (in red on the map) are overgrown and almost impossible to identify and follow. Take your fly nets as the horse flies were vicious. We walked 5 miles round trip, mainly uphill on the way out and didn't see a soul. Not many views in the forest.
