- R_TheReaderRio de Janeiro, RJ504 contributionsLovely monastery in a privileged locationLittle monastery on top of a cliff overlooking the Ionic Sea with views over a wonderful stretch of coast, which by itself is worth the visit. A small walk outside leads to a belvedere from where you can see Angelocastro in the distance. The monastery has a beautiful, well- maintained garden and a small museum. Free entrance, by the way.Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 22, 2023
- Dione S29 contributionsTimeless serenityI am not a religious man, but I am lucky enough to have visited countless churches, monasteries, temples and shrines throughout the world. I can say with all my heart that this is one of the most beautiful, serene and tranquil places I have ever been. There is a beautiful calming energy here, due to the gardens, views and ground staff. I found it incredibly peaceful and could have spent many hours here simply sitting without distractions. I don't tend to get that feeling in larger catherdrals, but this was wonderful and felt timeless. Please note: I visited in late October (as the tourist season was coming to a close), so maybe in mid-summer it might be considerably busier, and I imagine crowds would damped the experience somewhatVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 30, 2023
- Nahala X9 contributionsAmazing ViewBeautiful view. Went inside the Monastery amazing architecture. Priest was rude. He just came out and ring the bell and went inside as they close at 1pm. Its a deep hike so walking is little workout. We came down in a taxi for 8 euros who came to drop someone.Visited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 21, 2024
- Charlotte R89 contributionsTranquil and beautiful place, well worth the walk.Up on the hill, overlooking Paleokastritsa stands this beautiful monastery, which is like a little oasis. Even with the crowds, it is a tranquil place filled with beautiful flowers, impressive mosaics and religious iconography and impressive views out to sea. The walk up the hill was manageable, even in the heat. It was approximately 700m with a constant but gradual degree of elevation. We parked for €5 at the bottom of the hill, next to Corfu Aquarium. rather than driving up the hill although we did observe that there was a small carpark nearer the top (which was taken up mostly by a large coach on our visit). Modesty is expected when entering the monastery. A man was positioned at the door with sarongs, who directed various visitors to cover up (being very clear on which parts of their body needed covering - predominantly legs and shoulders) before letting them inside. It is free to enter with pots for donations dotted around. There is also a small gift shop selling reasonably priced items including fridge magnets and religious items. On the way up the hill, there is a small cafe/gift shop and there were also some street sellers positioned by the roadside on the way up with homemade art for sale. At the top, there are a range of view points you can enjoy as well which really makes the uphill walk worth it.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 8, 2024
- Rebecca LMelbourne, Australia123 contributionsBeautiful, tranquil visit.A delightful experience and a definite highlight to visit. There is parking close to the top for those that are early and not keen on the walk - which is not very long and easily manageable for most levels of fitness. The monastery was beautiful and offered amazing views. The cafe opened at 10am and we enjoyed a drink whilst overlooking the sea. Like most sites, you benefit from getting there ahead of the tour buses and large groups.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 11, 2024
- Jiří KZlin, Czech Republic86 contributionsIt must be difficult to run a church that is a tourist attractionAn authentic church visited by crowds of tourists. What remains of the spirituality of such a place? Merchandising, icons, crosses. Exhibition of priestly robes. How to describe the strange contradiction? Go and see for yourself. Free entry. You should dress up a bit. They won't let you in a bathing suit.Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 26, 2024
- Judit B121 contributionsGorgeous place with breathtaking views.Gorgeous place with breathtaking views. We ended up going there accidentally because we didn’t find parking for the beach. What a lovely place to discover! It was so peaceful and quiet around 5pm with not too many tourists. Scarfs are available for free for the ladies to cover their shoulders and legs. Stunning!Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2024
- liz sEastleigh, United Kingdom33 contributionsViews make it worth the slog up the hill!Well worth the walk up the very steep hill -views were truly stunning! Some interesting history in the museum and an atmospheric church. Real sense of history here with a beautiful atmosphere. Lovely little gift shop just outside; the chap running it was so interesting to talk to. Worth noting they only take cash here if you need a drink when you get to the top!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten August 6, 2024
- Leon L16 contributionsGoodThe church is ornately decorated inside with old woodwork and a few artefacts, paintings, candle holders, incense burners etc. The ceiling painting is elaborate and beautiful. But signage is poor. I guess that is because it is obviously still a working monastery. You wood never really know from outside it is a monastery as it looks more like a villa other than the double bell tower. Lovely views. Museum needs Aircon. We are biased since we visited Paleokastritsa and the monastery during our first visit to this beautiful island back in 1974.. At that time it was an unspoiled piece of nature which we visited several times during our first stay at the island back in 1974. Having that in mind we were disappointed when in 1996 seeing the place plastered with hotels and restaurants. Visiting the place again where we now had to pay to park we decided that this was the last time. I understand that many were attracted to build a hotel or a restaurant there but since it seems that the development has taken place completely uncontrolled with absolutely no sense of creating harmony with nature it is now a tourist trap and the monastery a souvenir shop. We feel that a pearl has been crushed.

You can walk to the monastery (be atention at de cars and motocycle) or you can go by car. It's a quite place, a beautiful monastery. The woman need's to have the legs covered. After you visit the monastery you can go to the restaurant or to walk to the view point were you can see (if it is sunny day) the heel of italy. :)

Monastery on the hill with views over Paleokastritsa, road up from town is controlled by lights so, even though we walked up, would have been easy to drive, there is some parking by the monastery and also a little further down. We arrived there early about 10am so it was quiet and peaceful. They have a nice little church which we sat in for a while to cool off, a gift shop, a very nice courtyard, a shaded lower ground area, a donkey and some cats.

Drive on past the beach and tat shops. There’s a traffic system which makes it easy to drive the last km or so up to the monastery. If you look out over the viewpoint to right of the entrance you’ll spot a cross high up on an outcrop above the sea and there’s a path which is an easy climb to it. Inside the monastery you can enter the church and separate museum (where there’s also a shop selling religious icons and postcards etc) the flower gardens are well kept and colourful. Well worth making the effort, even if you don’t have a car and have to walk up from the beach (good exercise!!)

We visited the monastery on a day when it rained heavily. It is a working monastery. Inside there is a beautiful altar featuring the saints. The museum has religious artwork and icons.
There are a number of stairs and ramps to negotiate. Not wheelchair accessible.

We came here for the views and it was beautiful - but my goodness it was crowded! Luckily we had our own rental car and found a spot to park not too far from the top otherwise there definitely would've been tears from the children. I was also shocked to see how rude some tourists were when being asked to cover their chest/thighs - it's a monastery not a night club!
Unless you're visiting in low season, happen to be in the area or religious I'd consider going elsewhere in Corfu for nice views.

Praticamente si parcheggia qualche metro prima dell'ingresso del monastero. Magari in pieno agosto potrebbe esserci il pienone. Dalla spiaggia e dal monastero c'è un semaforo temporizzato che consente l'accesso alla strada.

Is it possible to get a bus up the hill. As I'm disabled and could not walk up the hill?
Written June 15, 2019
How can we get there from Corfu town, without going on a tour?
Is public transport available?
Is taxi an option?
Thanks
Michael
Written July 22, 2018
Sorry late reply. Take the earliest bus from Corfu town is the cheapest way and then spend the day there. Take your swim wear and preferably swim shoes. Monastery visit first straight up the hill from the buses last stop. Then pick a cove for abit of a dip and sunbathing or take a boat trip at 10 euros each. Lastly finish off with a meal at the harbour. Spend all day here as it’s the best place on island.
