Now my wife & myself do really enjoy museums & history & ancient culture etc, We would rather do this than lie on a beach getting skin cancer! So , we found museum, had a good look around at all the stones & statues out side, It was very good. [about 1/2 hour?]. We went to enter the museum building....... before we were near the entrance or reception we were greeted by.. ..my best description would be a Greek version of 'the Governess off the Chase, on a bad day' "Show me your passports & proof that you have no covid" ! well we had to walk away, but we would not have been in the country if we had not been tested several times! any way we still enjoyed Thassos. kind regards Al & Angie

A very nice museum. The same style as others. I can compare with archaeological museums of Pythagoreion or Vathy where is even bigger Kouros. The biggest one is in an island Naxos. Anyway if do you like history then is this museum the first choice.

A truly outstanding museum, fresh and modern, with signage in three languages (Greek, French, and English) that explains the history of this lovely island. A world-class selection of exhibits, sympathetically displayed, with many sculptural pieces you can walk around to appreciate the skill of their creators.
The rooms are laid out by time period, starting with the Neolithic and ending at the Byzantine/Ottoman, with smaller themed units within the Classical period to show the various religious sanctuaries in ancient Thasos, e.g. Poseidon sanctuary, the theatre, wine production, etc. As a Classical archaeologist, I was very impressed - this is easily the best museum I've seen outside Athens. Thasos has a rich history and this museum showcases it perfectly.
My only criticism is that at this time of year, there's no museum shop. I'd have loved to have bought a guide book or postcards of the most striking artefacts. Closed Mondays, entrance fee 2 euro; good clean toilet facilities.

It definitely caught my interest and put me into that ancient atmosphere so I was almost there! From one side, it's a quite common museum where you can find out more about life and culture. But on the other side, it hides ancient mysteries which unfortunately I didn't find in museum of Thessaloniki.
I recommend this place for people who enjoy history and ancient times instead of just lying on the beach all day.

The museum is so much larger than I expected. Full of amazing archaeological artefacts! The history of Thassos is fascinating! Definitely worth spending some time visiting!

Thassos and specialy Limenas have a lot of historic sites, some of them are not worth event to mention but museum is excelent. Everything outside of the museum is totaly neglected and for us was very suprising that museum is well organized, clear, with lot of exponats (not like one in Thessaloniki or Athens). place where anyone can see history of Thassos if want. Pictures are allowed without flash
excelent choice for one afternoon brake and to learn kids that vacation is not only see and beach :)

The museum only looks small from the outside but don't be decieved. Give yourself plenty of time to get around all the floors.

The museum is small but very well organized and very rich with different types of excavated subjects. There are different types of statues, figures, jewelry, pots and money from different historic period of Thassos and from different part of Greece. The entrance fee is symbolic. There is nice museum shop. In front of museum there is big mosaic worth to be seen. This is must see place for those who love museums.

We thought it would be boring but it was quite interesting. Entrance is only 2 euros and it gave us a chance to cool down and chill as it was sooo hot outside. A bonus was that it wasn't busy at all and we felt like we were the only ones here. We started our walk at the earliest date and some of the sculptures and notes for the artefacts made really interesting reading. I could imagine what Ancient Greek life must've been like. We spent 2-3 hours here and it was well worth the visit. If you're in the town I would recommend a visit but not if you have kids with you.
