    World’s strongest maelstrom
We were in the port of Bodo as part of our Havila Pollux cruise for only a couple of hours and couldn’t decide what to do. At the last minute, we decided to do the Saltstraumen maelstrom rib boat excursion. We were fully kitted out in an impressive type of dry suit and also provided with some goggles. It was actually a pretty warm and sunny day and it was actually a bit too hot before we took off. However, once we were underway, I was very grateful for the protection from the wind. The maelstrom is the strongest in the world and was awesome. Our guide was friendly and informative. I would recommend doing this if you have time whilst in Bodo.

    A MUST SEE.
Wow! A wonderful force of nature. We took a loval bus from Trondheim (number 300) which took us to the bridge. A great walk up and over the bridge followed by a walk around the shoreline. The holiday site opposite was a great place to buy ice lollies on a scorching hit day.

Second Visit, But Still Haven't Seen It At Its Peak!
Saltstraumen has one of the strongest tidal currents in the world. Up to 400 million cubic metres (110 billion US gallons) of seawater forces its way through a 3 km (1.9 mi) long and 150 m (490 ft) wide strait every six hours. Vortices known as whirlpools or maelstroms up to 10 m (33 ft) in diameter and 5 m (16 ft) in depth are formed when the current is at its strongest. At this point, one source claims that the tidal current can reach 40 km/h (25 mph). This is my second visit here, but I still haven't seen the tidal currents at their peak. Maybe next time. Regardless, this is a must see if in Bodø.

Heads up regarding Bodo: While sailing on the Viking Star in Norway January 2020, 20 Viking guests booked this boat trip to visit Salstrumen because the Viking-offered excursions to Salstrumen were sold out. We each paid 1750 NOK or $190 US dollars per person (roughly $400/couple). Due to sea conditions the Viking Star captain had to skip the Bodo port and stay at Sea. (This followed the Hurtigruten event that occurred 1 week prior while trying to dock in Bodo; google the horrific video Jan.21, 2020), as well as the high sea disaster on Viking Sea in March 2019 (you can also good that) enroute to Bodo.
Due to the missed port January 30, 2020, all 20 guests lost the full $200 excursion and this tour company kept the entire $4000. I understand they need to pay the staff who planned on guiding our boats but they could have reimbursed 50% since they did not waste boat fuel or mileage on the boat. Additionally, I’m sure they were able to rebook some regular tourists on land to fill our now vacant spaces. It was not a decision to “skip” the excursion, it was a safety decision made by the captain for his 907 souls onboard the Viking Star.
I’m sure this tour company does great tours but I would just keep weather in mind before booking this as a cruise guest. There is always a risk of a port cancellation based on unforeseen weather conditions. At least Viking cruise will reimburse the guests who booked directly from them and missed the excursion. It’s a lesson learned for us and we will continue to communicate this message for future guests to consider.

A trip where you can go pretty empty-handed, similar to whale watching. We were on site at one point without much current and silently the lake rested. The cruise ship has refunded 50%.

this interesting natural spectacle is at kts best at exactly high tide or low tide, when the most water is flowing through. My tip is to take the local bus number 300 from Bodø which leaves you close to the Saltstraumen road bridge. Its a lot cheaper than the tours offered.

This is an interesting place with an interesting phenomena. You can check online what times the current is at it`s strongest during the day. When we were here it was strong going in, but not spectacular. I had a much better experience last time I was here 18 years ago. I guess the force level and the weather plays a role in that. If I was near I would stop just because it is a one of a kind place.

Not worth it when we went. Tour organised by Fred Olsen Cruise. Guide told us as we got on the bus that we had missed what we paid to see before we left the port. Iisnt a particularly scenic place and no fast water. I suppose it depends on when you go.

A must if you are in the area. The water movements can be admired very well from the bridge. You can also get there by speedboat.
It is easy to get there and back using public transport. On the way back, you just have to pay attention to the time! The last bus is so full that you sometimes have to sit on the floor.
We went there on our own as part of a Norway cruise. Highly recommended!
