Waterfall wasn’t flowing here. Seen frogs and snakes around and in the water itself. It’s ok to check out be be careful to swim. Don’t waste your time and visit Fonte Grande instead !

Fantastic! It's a shame that the existing infrastructure there is vandalized and there is little signage around the area. I recommend going around the cemetery in an "L" shape. This way you can easily find access to the 172-step staircase!

We visited here on a bank holiday and surprisingly it wasn’t as packed as expected- though it was busy. Bring lunch along and set yourself up for the day and enjoy the waterfall, have a swim or if you’re brave enough climb up and dive in.
There is a free car parking area at the top and it’s only a 5 minute walk down to the area. The incline on the return is pretty steep and those with walking difficulties may struggle.
Great free day out for the whole family!

We were warned by some helpful people at the top that the waterfall was dry. But we walked down to see anyway. This waterfall probably hasn't had water for over a year as my father visited last year and it was just a puddle then. Apparently it's because a nearby large orange farm diverted the river to water the trees. Another example of big business not giving a toss about the environment and the state bending over and letting them do whatever they want.
Don't bother even visiting to see it. Hugely disappointing.
The Câmera Municipal de Loulé should act over this wanton destruction of the environment and local heritage

I can definitely see the appeal of this place of interest and it is somewhere I would genuinely love to visit, however it’s been vandalised by graffiti it’s such a shame that this lovely place has been spoiled by vandals, if it were to be cleaned up I would definitely say this was a 4 star place to go to.

We visited the falls in April 2018 with 6 adults and 6 children and absolutely loved our visit. The hill to get down to the falls was quite steep but was manageable for a buggy, little legs, skinny legs and bigger legs alike. This time of year the water was cold, (bring a wetsuit) but tranquil and was relatively quiet in terms of the amount of people visiting at the same time. Out of our 12, only a handful were willing to swim but regardless of that it was a beautiful sight to see. The rocks are slippery and water was deep in parts so ultimate caution and care were required however seeing something so natural and beautiful in its purest form it made it the highlight of my trip. Unfortunately it seems as though there may have once been a snack bar of some type but now it is a rusty vandalised unit which although unsightly did not take away from our experience. There was plenty of open green space so a picnic blanket and nibbles contributed to our perfect experience. Parking was easy, and was clearly signposted so was easily found. I have been coming to Portugal for nearly ten years and this was my first trip however it will definitely not be my last.

To visit this attraction you park in the car park by the village cemetery. You then have about a 10 minute walk down a steep paved track, bear in mind you have to walk back up.
When you get to the bottom after a short walk there is a large grass area which is great for picnics and ball games, if the weather is not to too hot.
The falls are at the end of the grassed area.
When we visited in August the pool that the falls go into was quite small, because of how dry it had been.
But there was still enough water to bathe in, we gave it a try and it was good fun, we thought it was definitely worth visiting.
If you are visiting be sure to also visit the Fonte Grande, also in Alte. (see separate Review)

The falls were dry as a cork, but none the less a peaceful tranquil sun trap to have a picnic. There is definitely some maintenance required.

It's not well known even in Portugal but we found it very well hidden in a small location called Alte.

The fall is simply marvelous. We went there in a hot day and the water was excellent. One can dry itself and have sunbathes in the grass prepared for it.

Simply a marvel of nature and a mandatory place to visit.
