About
Whale Watching Hauganes is the oldest whale watching tour operator in Iceland based just 25 minute drive north from Akureyri. You will enjoy a fantastic scenery, birdlife, and of course the diverse range of whale species of Eyjafjordur. Commonly, we see Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Harbour Porpoise, and White Beaked Dolphins. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Killer Whale or a Blue Whale! Enjoy a little sea angling on the return trip and have your catch filleted to take with you. In 2017 we had a 100% success rate of spotting whales and expect no less this year! With our carbon neutral program, a cooperative effort with our local authorities, we neutralize the carbon emissions we create through our special Whale Forest forestry plan. Also, our oak boats run partially on biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil from local restaurants. Our guests can therefore be assure that by traveling with Whale Watching Hauganes they minimize their carbon footprint.

After doing a lot of research, we decided to go with this whale company and we are so thankful we did. The entire staff was so kind and knowledgeable throughout the entire trip, they really know what they’re doing! They even put out hot chocolate, coffe and a snack for you to enjoy while whale watching.

Another cool thing is they provide you with the suit so you don’t get cold or wet which was awesome to experience wearing one.

We saw so many whales on the day we went since they were feeding early. We had the best time and it was the highlight of our entire Iceland trip.

Oh and they even have really cool hot tubs across the whale watching company with the cold water plunge in the sea and the delicious restaurant next door. We definitely recommend the fish and chips if you go to the restaurant after the whale watching tour. You can easily spend 5 hours between the three places all in one convenient spot! 10/10 experience and day!!! Can’t wait to come back to Iceland and do this tour again :)

The experience was better than I had expected. At the beginning you seek only for the blows, than you follow the tips of the crew regarding where the tails flash, and finally just look ahead and admire, no problems with spotting. The whales come close to the boat and are clearly visible. The scenery of the fjords is also breathtaking.

The cruise was well organized: started on time, the boat is comfortable (I recommend the higher deck!), the crew was entusiastic regarding what they do.

Recommended as a part of stay in Iceland. Definitely worth spending a sunny midday there.

We booked the tour just the day before and did not manage to do it online but they were so kind to reserve the tour for us anyway letting us pay at the moment but with the online booking discount. The tour was great! We saw plenty of dolphins swimming around us (the seemed to be playing with our boat jumping in and out of the water all around us) and four whales...we loved it!

Amazing whales. Not only did we see the whales several times but at the end four whales surfaced all around our boat. Truly amazing. The boat staff was very informative about the whales.
The suits kept me toasty warm also. Great bonus.

This was one of the best experiences in Iceland. It was such an amazing experiences to see whales. It didn’t take long after we left the harbour when the first whales came around, it was breathtaking. The vessel they use had such a full of feeling because being old and wooden. I would recommend to use this company if you want the best experience with whales!

Árni and Gardar took us together with 18 other people out to sea and successfully observed three humpback whales. Our captain was always careful and drove us as close as possible to the whales. Thank you! We will definitely come back again!

This whale watching adventure was truly breathtaking!! We saw 12 humpback whales with several pods of three and two. They got us so close I felt I could’ve reached out and touched them. The Captain ensured the ride was smooth and helped steer us closer when they spotted whales. Our guide was informative, friendly, and helpful. A wonderful time!

Perhaps we were unlucky on the morning we went whale watching. We stayed 3.5 hours at sea to barely see one whale close by and another one from a distance. Furthermore the unenthusiastic tour guide had a boring tone of voice which didn't improve our experience.

Hi FrenchTraveller001. First of all we want to thank you for your honest opinion. We’re always grateful for constructive criticism and see it only as an opportunity for us to improve our tours even more. Regarding the whales, these are freely roaming animals in their natural environment. Therefore, even though we always try our very best, it’s impossible to expect or demand that of the whales that they are both many in numbers and behave certain ways that suits us. There are also limits to how much we can allow ourself to approach the whales and behave around them. These are the perimeters that we need to work within. We are though extremely glad to hear that you saw the whale up close and another one in the distance. It’s always an unforgettable sight! Regarding the guide, I have personally spoken to them all and reminded them to be cheerful at all times even though that this COVID-19 situation has been hard on us all. We all need more laughter into our life these days. Seeing whales here daily helps us cheer up and look forward to better and COVID-19 free days for years to come. Again, thank you so much for your honest opinion, it will certainly help us in making our tours even more unforgettable. All the best, Adalsteinn Svan - Manager at WWH

I was so glad we went whale watching here instead of in Husavik. We only saw two other boats the whole time we were out, and the crew of our boat knew exactly how many whales were in the fjord and found them quickly! I also appreciated that they respected the whales, and when it was clear the minke whale we saw was trying to avoid us, they left it alone. I know whale watching tours can't guarantee sightings, but we had great luck on our trip, and even if we hadn't, the fjord is a beautiful place for a boat ride!

Fantastic, amazing, Wonderful. First we had to get safety gear on then walked over to the boat. Got on and had an option to go up top or stay on the deck. Movement back and forth and up and down was allowed. We puttered out into the fjord and found a whale, Stratchy, because he had scars on his tail. The Captain was informative and answered questions. Both he and the Engineer watched for and told us where to look. They maneuvered the boat so that everyone could get a look and pictures. EXCELLENT Company and Staff!! Obviously we were lucky enough to have fairly calm seas and whales to see. Nature can not be predicted or controlled. The people that wrote negative reviews should keep that in mind. We had coffee or hot cocoa and cookies as we came back into the harbor. Wonderful experience.
