About Whale Watching Hauganes
Whale Watching Hauganes is the oldest whale watching tour operator in Iceland based just 25 minute drive north from Akureyri. You will enjoy a fantastic scenery, birdlife, and of course the diverse range of whale species of Eyjafjordur. Commonly, we see Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, Harbour Porpoise, and White Beaked Dolphins. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of a Killer Whale or a Blue Whale! Enjoy a little sea angling on the return trip and have your catch filleted to take with you. In 2017 we had a 100% success rate of spotting whales and expect no less this year! With our carbon neutral program, a cooperative effort with our local authorities, we neutralize the carbon emissions we create through our special Whale Forest forestry plan. Also, our oak boats run partially on biodiesel made from recycled cooking oil from local restaurants. Our guests can therefore be assure that by traveling with Whale Watching Hauganes they minimize their carbon footprint.

Overview
Enjoy a responsible whale-watching cruise with an eco-friendly company, and reduce the chance of motion sickness by traveling in a large stable oak boat in the sheltered waters of Eyjafjörður. Travel slowly and quietly so as not to disturb the wildlife. This leaves lots of time to soak up the scenery, and you’ll also have the chance to fish from the boat.

Fantastic! My dream came true today: I finally saw whales in real-life :-) After a failed attempt in Argentina a few years ago, I almost lost hope but these guys are very professional, know where to look, mention when and where they see one so you can follow and take photos or video. Face mask mandatory for everyone, which was not a problem because it's also helpful against cold wind. Coffee, hot chocolate and cinammon roles were provided at about 2/3 of the trip, you need to sanitize your hands before grabbing something. We felt warm because of the floating overalls we got to wear and were lucky on the weather. Nice staff. They sell some lovely local, hand-made stuff in the shop. If you join this whale tour you get 10% discount on the food at the nearby restaurant, which has an excellent fish soup. Hauganess is a tiny town but this whale watching tour is well-worth the drive. Not sure how many people can fit max on this boat, today there were about 30. You do not need to print the booking, just tell your name.

Perhaps we were unlucky on the morning we went whale watching. We stayed 3.5 hours at sea to barely see one whale close by and another one from a distance. Furthermore the unenthusiastic tour guide had a boring tone of voice which didn't improve our experience.

Hi FrenchTraveller001. First of all we want to thank you for your honest opinion. We’re always grateful for constructive criticism and see it only as an opportunity for us to improve our tours even more. Regarding the whales, these are freely roaming animals in their natural environment. Therefore, even though we always try our very best, it’s impossible to expect or demand that of the whales that they are both many in numbers and behave certain ways that suits us. There are also limits to how much we can allow ourself to approach the whales and behave around them. These are the perimeters that we need to work within. We are though extremely glad to hear that you saw the whale up close and another one in the distance. It’s always an unforgettable sight! Regarding the guide, I have personally spoken to them all and reminded them to be cheerful at all times even though that this COVID-19 situation has been hard on us all. We all need more laughter into our life these days. Seeing whales here daily helps us cheer up and look forward to better and COVID-19 free days for years to come. Again, thank you so much for your honest opinion, it will certainly help us in making our tours even more unforgettable. All the best, Adalsteinn Svan - Manager at WWH

The tour was really good. We saw 3 different types of whales. We were also able to spot a group of 3 humpbacks. A few days before we did a whale watching tour in Husavik, but we just saw one humpback.

We had a brilliant experience on our whale watching tour in Hauganes! We saw many beautiful whales which came very close to the boat. Although you really see them almost all the time (I have been 6 or 7 times) today it was particularly beautiful, as one of the whales checked us out rather than the other way around. It stayed with the boat for around half an hour as it was very very curious to see who we were. I personally find it especially nice to go with this local whale watch company, because although they receive many tourists in summer times, they have remained very authentic. They own two classic boats, true fishing ships, which the owners sail themselves on the whale watching trip! Highly recommended!
