We highly recommend Aurora Service Tours! In fact, we took the weekend Asgard tour (in Utsjoki) in February 2019, and loved it so much we returned in January 2020 to do the same tour!
We are independent travelers, and Aurora Service Tours is the only tour group we’ve ever done, and we thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience—the cabin, the aurora chasing, the dog sledding, and the snowmobile riding! I really love how this company does not stick to a defined itinerary of where they will drive to see the auroras; instead, they focus on doing their best to ensure we can see the auroras, wherever they may be in the area. Fabulous!
Our guide was Angus King, a retired school principal, and he was fantastic! We really appreciate everything he did to ensure we had a great experience. He constantly used all the available tools and data to determine where and when the auroras may be visible, and was willing to drive us anyplace necessary to get us best-positioned to see the auroras! Angus also thoroughly answered all of our questions about the auroras as well as all other questions about Finland’s history and environment. In addition, one woman in another cabin was there for her birthday weekend, and Angus and the owner even brought her cake and drinks to celebrate around the fireplace in the teepee-like structure.
The cabin was comfortable and cozy: the sauna, wood fireplace, heated floors and loaded kitchen was like a second home. The van we drove in was comfortable, warm, and we felt safe on the snowy roads. I highly recommend both the dog sled riding and snow mobile experiences—we had tons of fun riding on the frozen lakes, and even played with husky puppies! This year, there were two reindeer at the Asgard site, and we even hand-fed them! We chose to go to the Asgard location so that we would see more of the beautiful Finnish landscape on the drive from the airport—and it was well worth the drive!
Love this tour, and we are already planning to return in December for the third time.
Tips: Plan your meals before the trip and make a shopping list so you don’t buy too much. It’s better to bring many layers of clothes than a few thick layers. Bring a tripod.

I've just returned from spending three nights in Asgard and can honestly say it's one of the best trips I've ever done.

Thanks to our marvellous guide, Darren, whose expertise knows no bounds, we were able to see the lights on all three of our nights, despite the unseasonably mild, cloudy weather.

Darren is passionate about finding the lights, whether they be at camp itself or across the border into Norway. He knows all the secret spots and their microclimates which enabled us to maximise our chances. Thanks to a tablet messaging system, Darren was even able to keep us updated should there be visibility from the observation deck within the camp itself. From a central kota, Darren was also able to explain the science behind the lights whilst we warmed ourselves by the fire.

The accommodation was superb - a modern chalet with modern appliances and furnished with reindeer antlers and hides for an authentic experience. The sauna was a lovely addition with the opportunity to launch yourself from the nearby decking into the deep snow to cool down. Request cabins 6 or 7 (at the time of writing) if you can because these were the newest and were superior in my opinion.

If all of the above wasn't enough, a husky ride on a frozen lake (including the chance to hold some newly-born huskies) and a reindeer feeding opportunity crowned the trip.

Thanks to Darren's outstanding photography skills, he was able to provide us with a memory stick of over 200 exceptional images to remember our trip forever.

For those of you pondering whether to go for this trip, do not think twice. Don't waste your money on a cheap alternative in a touristy area with poor visibility and blasé guides. Plump for Asgard, where the remote surroundings and dark skies of the Far North provide the perfect backdrop and maximum chances of seeing this phenomenon.

Our trip to Finland to see the Aurora Borealis more than met our expectations. We stayed at the picturesque Valhalla cottages which were well equipped and were very warm and comfortable and had their own sauna which was a lovely bonus. There were also snow suits , some hats, gloves and boots available if you did not bring your own with you. As it is self catering we could have done with an extra oven rack (there was one) and some cooking trays or casserole dishes but this is just a minor complaint as I did have the foresight to bring some foil trays with me. Our cottage was located just a few minutes walk from a frozen lake where we gathered at night to watch the lights with our wonderful guide Canice. We were very lucky that the lights appeared for us with one particularly special display which made the trip an unforgettable experience. We would advise you to dress warmly as it’s was as low as minus 21 at times but we did have the use of a hut where Canice had a lovely log fire going where we could go to warm the fingers and toes if it got too cold. Canice also provided hot juice and cookies for us every night. We would also recommend the daytime activities , snowmobiling, dog sledding and the cultural tour which we thoroughly enjoyed. What we liked about Valhalla was its location although in a pristine forest it is still a short drive to the airport and all the activities. Also if you forgot to buy anything you were passing through the town and Canice was more than happy to stop at the shop for supplies. Overall we had a wonderful trip which will always evoke happy memories. We had a great bunch of people with us which also made it so enjoyable. We would highly recommend Aurora Tour Services , they delivered on all aspects of the tour and a special thanks to Canice who went out of his way to ensure everyone had a great experience and also gave us a copy of all pictures he had taken of the Aurora which was really appreciated as we did not have a camera with us. Would we stay here again ? Most definitely!

Just back from Asgard cottages, what a fantastic holiday, memories to treasure.

Cottages were brilliant; well equipped, warm and cosy.

Good attention to detail and if you ever wanted anything then our guide Darren was on hand! Punctual, reliable, cheerful and friendly, a safe comfortable driver in challenging conditions he worked his socks off, helping create a real community between the guests.

We were lucky and saw the lights on 4 nights, with strong showings on Tuesday and a spectacular display on Wednesday. It was surreal seeing folk still wandering around at 4am, all looking skyward with smiles on their faces.

We picked Asgard and had a great time from the very start till end of the tour thanks to our very helpful and so friendly tour guide and driver Angus. On the first day, we encountered an intense snowstorm up to Utsjoki but arrived safely thanks to Angus’s excellent driving skills. Our cabin was clean, warm and well equipped (the only thing missing was a knife sharpener) with our own personal sauna which saw a lot of use. The fireplace was also well used and there was an endless supply of firewood available.

The weather wasn’t that kind to us with three out of our four nights being cloudy. However, even the cloudy weather didn’t dampen Angus’s enthusiasm as we raced over the border into Norway looking for stars and clear sky aided and abetted by his knowledge, experience and an array of on-line technical tools unfortunately to no avail. However, on the fourth night conditions were more favourable and we finally hit clear skies and aurora an hour’s drive south of Utsjoki.

Throughout the whole trip Angus took numerous aurora, group and memorable individual pictures that were given to us on a USD stick when we were on our way back to Ivalo on our last morning. These were much better than anything we were able to do with our mobile phones (although the new iPhone11 Pro that one of the other guests had did a pretty good job!).

Other highlights for us were the skidoo outing and generally wandering around and enjoying the arctic weather - Utsjoki can be pretty cold but I was most impressed by the snow suits provided for our use (S, M, L and XL). We did bring our own cold weather gear but they really made a difference.

Overall a great trip with and a truly Finnish experience. Angus did a great job and we were impressed by his amazing enthusiasm, dedication and real heartfelt want for all the group members to have a great time.

We were a group of 15, comprising of a group of friends with family, a couple and a mother-daughter pair. We were met by Angus at the airport and he was our tour leader, driver, guide, support for the whole stay. Everything was well prepared and according to schedule. The atmosphere was very friendly almost like travelling with family. Angus made us all feel we belong. Every night we go out we get warm drinks and cookies. He ensured that we get to see the aurora borealis and tried everything possible including driving out during heavy snowfall chasing clear skies!

The cottages were comfy and well-equipped. Logistics were excellent. The daytime activities: snowmobile drive, walk in the forest and dogsledding were tops!

I would highly recommend their services and would love to come back at the next opportunity.

I went to this trip with a Chilean friend, and we just love every minute of it. Since we landed in Ivalo, where Angus was waiting for us, going to the supermarket, listening to all the good tips about what food and drinks to buy, arriving to the cabins, until we left after three espectacular days. The first great impression was the cabin, super nice and cozy, warm, fill with everything you need, including its own sauna. You must try it, and then go naked on the snow, you’ll love it. Even it was not included, Agnus saw that the first night was promising, so he took the group out and it was fantastic!! We saw the norther lights and you could see them “dancing”, breathtaking experience. Agnus is a great guide and host. Always smiling, and worrying about all of us, looking around to show us everything he could. 100% recommended trip, also the other activities such as the husky sleigh and the snowmobile, so much fun!! I’m looking forward to go back!! The whole service from Aurora was great but I have to give a huge thanks to Angus for his amazing work.

Day 1 back home from the most amazing experience in Utsjoki with Angus King our guide.
Angus made the difference, always available, very knowledgeable and so very endearing.
Angus made it his personal ambition to make sure we saw the aurora borealis even though the conditions were not perfect. He drove us to the best spots and waited patiently for the aurora to show up. His passion made all the difference.
Highly recommended! We will be back

It was mind blowing that we were in the Arctic Circle. All the guests were picked up on time at Ivalo and our tour guide for the weekend, Mr. Angus King, suggested food to buy for our weekend stay at Utsjoki. Then, after two hours drive up north, Angus stopped the bus so we can see sunset at the Arctic. It was amazing! The cottage was very clean, efficiently built, and it has its own sauna. We saw the Borealis right away that night. Unfortunately, due to a snowstorm, we were not able to catch the Borealis in our area for the next two nights, but Mr. Angus still tried to find a spot and even brought us to Norway to see if we can catch the Borealis.
Other activities that we definitely enjoyed were dog sledding and snowmobiling. Incredible experience. Even though the weather did not cooperate, Angus made sure our stay in the Arctic was worthwhile by bringing us to the northernmost tip of the EU, saw lot of reindeer, moose sighting, and most of all the magnificent landscape of the Arctic Circle.
I have to say, it was worth the trip, and we truly enjoyed our stay at Utsjoki. Thanks to Angus King, our tour guide who made it all possible. Thank you very much!

My trip to Utsjoki was truly the trip of a lifetime! My guide, Angus, was enthusiastic, friendly, and remarkably helpful from the moment I got off the airplane to the moment he dropped us back off. His tips for shopping in the Finnish market, his knowledge about the wildlife and landscapes of Lapland, and of course his passion and enthusiasm for the aurora made Angus the best guide I could have asked for! He was always happy to share his knowledge, answer questions, and make sure everyone was having a great time. We saw the aurora 2 out of the 3 nights, and although the conditions weren't favorable, Angus never gave up and was determined to find us a clear sky, even though it meant extra driving for him! The daytime activities were the perfect addition to the trip and I still can't decide which was my favorite. The snowmobiling was a fantastic experience and the husky sledding was unlike anything I've done before. We even got to meet husky puppies, and they were absolutely adorable! I booked this trip as a birthday present to myself, and I'm seriously considering returning for every birthday going forward! Especially since Angus and my lovely group helped me celebrate! The tour was fantastically organized, the cabin was clean, cozy, and equipped with everything I could have possibly needed, and the Asgard camp was beautiful. I just can't say enough about the wonderful time I had. Thank you, Aurora Service tours for everything you do. Also, thank you to Erja, who answered all of my questions prior to the trip. And, of course, a special thank-you to Asgard Angus who was great company and a fantastic tour guide!
