Visited the lake in winter, the lake was frozen and a splash of snow covered it. The vastness and white made it a must to admire.

Probably one of the best places to see the northern lights in the world!

I have lost count of how many times I have visited the area over the past last 5 years and so far I have a Success rate of 100%!

And the best thing about it is that there is no admission fee! It is accessible to the public without any charge or fee! Just be careful if you go there in a winter time with the ice, check with a professional or local before sitting a foot on the ice!

It will be beautiful if we have clear sky in the day and night for the Northern Light. It is very easily accessible. In winter there will activities such as ice fishing, skating, husky riding etc

We viewed the torne trask from the railway line as our train headed from Kiruna station to Abisko Tourisstation. It was a mesmerising view along the eastern side of the carriage that kept us enthralled for the 90mins. Even though the colours were mainly white, grey and brown they created a visual masterpiece of the lake, trees in the foreground and hills/mountains in the backdrop. It must be a picturesque scene in the summer, and we hope to return to view it under the midnight sun.

The lake speaks as it freezes!
An unbelievable sound.
Please be very sure the ice is strong enough to hold you. If you venture out while it is still freezing solid, you must be prepared with escape hooks.
One of the locals went through when we were there, he was OK because he knew how to get out of the water.
From the lake I took my favorite photos of the aurora borealis, better even than from the sky station.

We went out on a sled right across the lake. The ice was transparent and about 12 inches thick. An extremely beautiful place but one of us got frostbite!

Beautiful lake side walk. The lake is so big it extends miles along the sweden norway connecting route and feels almost like a calm sea. With snow mountains in the background it makes for a splendid scenic walk. Make sure you have ice grips /yaktrax clipped to the shoes, some patches of the approach are very slippery and dangerous. During winter months, the daylight time is from 10-1.30 so take a tripod along and you can have yourself some amazing landscape pics.

This lake is a short walk from many accommodations in Abisko. I especially enjoyed it as a peaceful place to view the Northern Lights in the winter. It is also very pretty during the daytime with nice views of the surrounding mountains. I would recommend visiting this lake in the late evenings of winter to search for the Northern Lights.
