Taking a dog sled ride into the national forest and on a frozen lake is a wonderful experience. The drivers were very friendly and gave our group a wonderful ride. The dogs were very friendly and were excited to be hitched up to the sled...More
I booked many activities through this company, Snowshoeing Aurora hunting, dog sledding, ice fishing and snowmobiling. ALL was amazing! Guides were so helpful, fun and patient. Don't book with anyone else, they are wonderful and know what they're doing. Would highly recommend!
We spent four hours snowmobiling with Roger through the Abisko National Park. We were even lucky enough to witness the Sami reindeer herding. The scenery was magnificent and Roger's fabulous local knowledge enabled us to see moose in the wild on three occasions. He provide...More
We went snowshoeing with our guide Eric and it was just an amazing trip. (We booked this trip through Off The Map Travel, who were fantastic for planning our entire trip.)

So glad I booked this. Our guide was Tim, (not sure of his last name), and he was very knowledgable and accomplished as a climber. It was so much fun and it's perfect for beginners. You don't have to be super sporty to do this.
We went to the hills for a snowshoe hike. We were picked up at Abisko STF Tourist station, where we were staying. We got warm clothes and were taken to the hills on a carriage drawn by a snowmobile: what an excitement! Especially since we...More
I signed up the photography tour with Lighs over the Lapland. I have an incredible time shooting the northern light. The photography gears are all prepared by the company and you just need to learn a few tricks to get your own version of the...More

Abisko an ideal setting albeit difficult access. A winter wonderland and some intersting accommodation. Activities via ACTIVITIES IN ABISKO a reliable operator. However. While the lake and countryside provide many clear nights it is all abt the weather and solar activity. The chairlift is still out of action and after 3 nights we gave up. Tromso in Norway a good option as are the Lofoten islands. Check the Senja FB page for live videos of recent auroras. My best auroras were in the Lofoten. We were based in Svolvaer but travelled in a tour to Gimsoy and watched from the beach. Spent 3 weeks in arctic and Lofoten were the best. We went late February. Read somewhere September and March very active months. No guarantee but the longer you are there the more likely you will see something. Save $$$$$$$$ super xpensive.

Abisko is meant to be one of the best locations for aurora chasing because of the greatest number of clear nights - the terrain/ lake contribute. While it is a great location as is Bjorkliden the problem is that the weather is not the only thing to take into account. Solar activity must be happening. I was there late February 2018 and while I caught a mini glimpse of lights two of the four nights there a major cold swept in from Siberia and blocked all possibility the other two nights. The previous week they had fabulous colour displays. The chair lift in Abisko has been out for a very long time and no repairs in sight so don't expect that option. You will be taken out by small tour groups who will drive you out in a rough sleigh drawn by a snow mobile to a hut where you get hot tea and a chance to see whatever comes. Being inland it is a super cold place so be well prepared with clothing for bitter cold. I highly recommend contacting 'Roger' at 'Activities in Abisko'. He has taken astrophysicists out and knows a lot about aurora chasing. He also does snowmobiling tours and other winter activities that service Abisko and Bjorkliden. A very generous and helpful tour guide. 'activitiesinabisko' I spent three weeks in the arctic to maximise my aurora sightings - went to Tromso in Norway and also Svolvaer in the Lofoten Islands as well as Abisko and Iceland. I saw some activity in Tromso but be prepared to travel out and be very cold. I saw some in Iceland but the best was in the Lofoten Islands. There is a small observatory at Senja that I didn't get to. I based myself in Svolvaer and booked a tour with Jaan from Lofoten Aktiv lofoten-aktiv dot no for Norway. Page wont let me use link in full He was great - if the weather wasn't right we didn't go out. Saw the best aurora possible - the kind that happens once or twice a season. The chasing is exactly that - a lot of driving and visiting at least two spots to get a view - may be a low bar on the horizon, a wave overhead or a full sky and corona - or nothing. The longer you stay the greater your chances. Make sure you have other things to see and do as well. Good luck. Auroras have been seen already from a few days ago so as long as the sky is clear and there is solar activity you will see something. Good Luck
