very pretty, good guided walk. But it was quite hard going for us 70+ year olds because the snow was quite deep either side of the narrow path, so a lot of concentration needed to watch where you were walking. My friend fell three times. Having said that, we were there in January and Im sure those younger than us would have had no issues. We were just being careful because at our age, you don't want to fall.

STF, as the locals call it, may be a little different for you if traveling from the U.S. If staying at the hotel at the tourist station be sure to get the room upgrade. The regular rooms resemble a hostel with a small bathroom. I stayed there in both and the upgraded room is well worth the extra cost.
The dinners there are actually not bad. Be aware the menu rotates every three days and you option are only one set starter, entree, and dessert they have in that night’s rotation or a vegetarian option. The breakfast is chaotic. It’s only a buffet designed to maximize the number of surfaces everyone must touch and the time everyone hovers over the open food containers. So if you’re germaphobic you may have a problem The lunch is a little better, but not by much.
The good news is you can walk just outside the back door and see the Northern Lights when they are out. We chose a guided tour with Lights Over Lapland and had a very good experience. The guides take you to a number of different locations for viewing and try really hard to assure everyone has a memorable experience.
Many hiking trails and train station is within walking distance.

Visiting in winter gives you a snowy and iced landscape against a colourful sky (polar night). I enjoyed the hiking tracks and simply the silence of the place. Beautiful mountains, deep canyons, snowcovered trees, frozen waterfalls... The list goes on! Definitely worth a visit!

On our way back from the Lofoten Islands to Rovaniemi we spent the afternoon in this magnificent park full of lakes. It is the right place to walk in nature. There are paths of varying difficulty, even for short walks suitable for everyone. The panoramic points are also beautiful.

We visited Abisko for 4 nights and spent a few days around the park. We went husky sledging, walking and on a snow mobile. This is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. So serene and unspoilt. Lucky enough to see both the northern lights in the evening and the ‘snow crystal lights’ (not sure of their name) in the morning.

I visited with a friend in early Feb to do a snow hike. We had a great time. The hiking paths are wel marked. The landscape has a beautiful austere quality to it. Absolutely amazing. Be sure to bring the right equipment when you go hiking!

We made the trip here from Australia specifically to see the Northern Lights. It was snowing when we arrived and the first night, all we could see was a green glow in the clouds.
The next day, we went for a walk and enjoyed the snow. It was a winter wonderland.
That night, we did a photographic tour with Lights over Lapland. We walked down to the lake, the clouds parted and we saw the amazing Northern Lights!
The next morning, the sun was out. We went for a walk and saw the huskies preparing for the winter season. They were beautiful.
We stayed in the Abisko Turistation. It was basic but it was warm. There were lots of little nooks to hide in around the hotel and a warm fireplace. The food in the restaurant was amazing. The staff were really friendly and helpful. It is located directly across the road from the train station. It is really easy to access.
I loved my entire experience of being in Abisko National Park. I can't wait to go back and stay a little longer and experience more of the area.

Came for the Northern Light but this only happens in the dark. What a better way to walk in the national park during the daylight hours. Enjoyed our walk in the marked path but can be difficult to know where you are going in the winter snow since most of the path were buried in snow. The walk to the lake takes about 20 mins (i guess) from the hotel building.

We came in autumn and this place wowed us. It's beautiful just by strolling in the national park. Every picture taken here is a work of art and the nature itself it's worth every cent you pay here. At night if you're lucky, you can see the northern lights. In just two nights. We managed to see the lights twice and they are dancing joy! IMO, it's the best place to see the northern lights. the Kings trail itself has its hidden beauty. We loved it and so will you.

We visited in Feb 2010. We wanted somewhere to see the Northern Lights and after looking at the forecast we drove to Abisko.
When we arrived we first had a meal across the road - traditional Swedish food including elk stew. Reasonably priced and full of people waiting for it to get darker.
Once it had got dark we drove over the road and took the chair lift to the Sky Station. We were already wearing ski clothes (and thermals) but we were also provided with a blue ski oversuit (common to all outdoor activities we found) and were very grateful for it. It was freezing on the open chair lift (2 people per chair) and it took a while getting to the top. As we climbed we could see the beginning of the Lights.
When we arrived we saw the Sky Station consisted of a wooden hut with cafe facilities and a warm waiting area. Toilets aren't inside - they are a few minutes walk across the snow fields :)
Even though it was -30c outside (with an added wind chill) plenty of people were taking photos and videos. It was dark so care had to be taken walking in the deep snow.
We had a lovely time (especially as my boyfriend proposed!) and would definitely return.
(The following evening the chair lifts broke down with people stranded still sat on them - it took over half an hour to get them fixed. The snow underneath is very deep and its advised not to jump into it but hang on for the chairs to be fixed.).

Hi, we are also planning to go to Abisko National Park in early October. Do you mind sharing which week was this? Should I give up on the colorful autumn leaves or is there a chance?
Thanks in advance!

I will be in Sweden this May and am considering visiting Abisko about the third week in May, but I am having difficulty finding information about about the weather and [day] hiking conditions when visiting the park in May. For example, will there still be snow, what are the trail conditions then, and are there many mosquitoes that early? Please advise.
Written February 17, 2020
I don't know about snow but while I was there last week, a local told me that they do have mosquitoes in spring. I was discussing with him about my plans to go back to Abisko in spring/summer which is when he warned me about the problem. Also, in the middle of May there is almost no night in Abisko.

Dear All,
We are three couples reaching Kiruna by air on 21st January 2020. We are visiting the region with a hope to see the northn lights. We plan to hire a c
staying at both the locations for 3 days each. Our total length of stay is going to be 10 days and we will be flying back to india from kiruna. My questions are as under -
1. Whether driving from abisko national park to Tromso and back is possible during winter?
2. In case we get to see northern lights at Abisko national park (our first proposed stop after reaching Kiruna) whereat we propose to stay for 3 days, then does it make sense to travel to Tromso?
3. What other things can we do during our stay of 10 days in the region?
4. We were initially contemplating to fly into stockholm and hire a car at the airport and drive to abisko national park by taking breaks of 1 or 2 days enroute. Is it crazy to consider the said option?

Hello
From Stockholm-Kiruna you can either fly(my recommendation) or take the train. Rent a car in Kiruna at the airport and drive to Abisko(1hour).
Abisko is the best place to see the northern lights.
There is an app called aurora now which I would recommend to download on your phone. It’s reliable.
Go down to the lake when it starts it’s a perfect spot.
Tromso is to do from Abisko roundabout 3 hour by car.
Other things to do which is fun is husky tour and snowmobile tour. We did our husky tour in Kiruna. The snow mobile in Abisko.
The ice hotel in Jukkasjärvi is also something tourists do.
If you have time book a tour to one of the same villages where you get an insight in there way of living and handling reindeers.

Gracias!
Saludos

Hi there. I'll stay in Kiruna from 26th to 29th at Camp Ripan hotel, and I booked the activity from the hotel except the one which is auroratour in abisko. They says its full of guests. What can I do in this case? How can I book a tour in abisko ? Any information will be helpful to me. I will truly appreciate it.
Thanks...

The hotel at Bjorkliden facilitates the tour to the aurora station also.

Hi, we will be staying near Kiruna from 17-19 October 2016. We are a family with 2 boys aged 4 and 6. We have a car with us. Abisko is high on our wish list and so is the Aurora Sky Station, but going up there to see the Northern Lights would require us to go there past kids' bedtime (I'm reading online that the lights are best seen between 22:00 and past midnight, is that correct??), go in the charlift in the dark (which is daunting if you would know our youngest boy and how he doesn't sit still...), wait for the lights and then drive back to Kiruna. I'm worried it's a little bit too much for the boys, and the owner of the campsite we are staying at (Camp Alta) says that we might just as well see the lights from there, because they are 15km out of town (no light pollution). It would be much easier to monitor the aurora activity online, and get our boys out of bed when the lights are actually visible, or else let them sleep. What is your opinion/experience on going up to the Skystation with kids? Is it only worth it in the middle of the night?
We would like to see Abisko by daytime though. Given that we have our own car with us, driving seems the logical thing to do. I was considering the Kiruna - Narvik train too because our boys are convinced that this is the actual "polar express" ;-) But it seems more flexible to go there with our own car...? Can you actually drive around in the park or is there only the E10 and the rest should be done on foot? In the latter case the train gets more interesting...
Can anyone recommend walks / activities with the kids? They can walk for a couple of hours but if climbing is involved it should of course be safe enough. Where is this beautiful watervall located that is seen in every YouTube clip about Abisko? Is that reachable by car or within reasonable walking distance from a place where we can leave the car?
Hope to get some info, our time up in Kiruna is limited (we have other reasons for being there that time of year) so planning helps to make the most of it.
Thanx!
Sander

Hi there,
I want to do some backcountry camping and am planning to drive to Abisko National Park in May. Will roads be open for driving and should I plan for winter or spring camping gear?
Any other advice you may have would be very helpful.
Thank you!
