The 2 statues in Melanes are worth the drive there. There's a small parking area and then it's a short walk to the first statue and another 10-15 minutes to the next. It's a wonderfully cool and shaded spot where you find the first statue. Next to the parking area, don't miss the ancient site they uncovered which a lot of people skipped. It's free to walk around, and one of the coolest things to see is where they kept bees!

Rent a car in Naxos. This is one of the many stops to see on this amazing island. One of the few free things to do. The statue is exactly as they left it so many years ago. This is a beautiful place with many trees and a nice walk.

There are two sites on island of Naxos where there are giant ancient marble sculptures of a Young man, or Kouros, can be seen. This location called Melanes and lies in the middle of the island, near the village of Flerio, and here can be seen two unfinished archaic statues, one called Kouros of Flerio, and another Kouros of Faranghi. Through the ancient time and until today this location served as a marble quarry for famous Naxian marble, and the quarry is still operating on the slope of the hill nearby. When people produced large marble statues in antiquity, they began their labour on the site, directly in the quarry, and began with putting the rough form for the colossus lying on the bedrock. Some of such cutting works went wrong, colossal statues got a crack or another injury, so this one was left on the site unfinished.
In this location there are two colossi to be seen, both from 8-7 century BC, measuring some 6-7 meters in length. If you park your car nearby the signed parking, just start to walk along the paved path and after some 100-150 meters you will find the first Kouros lying on the ground in some local people's backyard. Proceeding further along the path, going little up and down through the fields and passing goats and sheep, you arrive at the elevated platform with remains of another colossal statue of Kouros, this one in better condition. This second part of a walk from nr 1 to nr 2 takes some 15 minutes, some 400 -500 meter with some climbing, which can be half-difficult in summer. Take your walk in the early morning for better experience.
On the same site to the left from parking, the remains of old Temple to Gods responsible and helping people in mining works can be seen, rather interesting signs and explanations on the site. Entrance to those sites is free.

The site was on our way back home, so we stopped to check it out, but wouldn't go there for a second visit. Wouldn't recommend taking long route exceptionally for Kouros as it is not worth it, far better to spend time by the seaside or exploring the mountain paths.

Stumbled across this area touring on the motorbike and was stoked as had read about them in some blogs. We took the long walk turning slightly right instead of left after the entrance by mistake but was a great walk through lovely country! Lead as straight to the unfinished statues after a few km and took the quick road down and straight to the second one closest to the carpark. Went in June so hot make sure to carry enough water!
Was a great part of the day discovering Naxos off the beaten track!

An excellent place to be!! Peaceful!! You can see there the unfinished marble statue Kouros and the running waters which initiated the watermills during the past years!! Melanes is a wonderful village and you can find there delicious local food!! Don't miss to visit Vasilis tavern at Melanes of Naxos!!! The food is excellent there and you can see the green all over valley which hides the famous statue!!!

Travelling by car from Chora Naxos to the village of Melanes and continuing till the Kourochori you arrive in a parking lot full of trees. Yoy have to walk for 5 min till you arrive at a small field full of tree shadow and the 1st Kouros is just in front of you at the same position where the ancient sculptors took this piece of stone and started to made it to look like human. But in the prosedure of moving thsi huge statue somewhere else its leg broke. So the ancinets Greeks left him just wright there so the future visitors can see him there. This minimalistic huge statue has a partner Kouros about 10 min walk up the hill at a second spot but under the sun without the calm tree shadow of the first Kouros. Also next to them is the ancient quarry where all started.

We took a walk up the seventy five steps from the roadway to see the Statute of Dionysus. You do need to be careful as the area around the statue is marble and very slippery. You need water if it is a hot day, especially if you have children with you. This is another fascinating glimpse into the past for history lovers.

This statue is pretty cool. It has a lot of history behind it. However, it is very difficult to access if you don't go with a tour guide. The signs are all worn out and some aren't translated in English.
