About
Located 95 km. southwest of the Goergian capital Tbilisi, in the Kvemo Kartli region, the townlet and the archaeological area of Dmanisi has been excavated and studied by Lordkipanidze. The paleontologic human finds have made a great impact in the academic world: the skulls dates back to 18.000 years ago. Our ancestors, now it's for sure, in that period were in Europe, and not only in Africa.

This place is very difficult to find. Signage is poor. We saw 2 big billboard advertisements about Ancient Settlements, but no directions indicated. There was also a lot of constructions going on in the area, and we eventually found the place, the metal gates were closed, but not locked. We opened the gates and went into the site. A monk and other people there did not seem pleased to see us. Maybe the place was closed. We visited the monastery. A young fellow there was mopping the floor but gestured us in. We didn't, as we didn't want to mess up his mopping. We climbed the ruins and enjoyed the nice scenery. Unfortunately we don't know where the artifacts are being kept. I guess my research was not that thorough. It really would be nice if there is more signage and information, since this is on the tentative UNESCO list.

Trip to the Museum is important and cognitive I think, as Dmanisi have an iconic position in the discovery and demonstration of human evolution. In my point of view this trip will be more attractive for scientists, or simply for them who are interested in archaeology, because Dmanisi discoveries are most ancient in whole Eurasia and are dated to 1.75 million years ago. There is the great potential for further finds as well.

Dmanisi archeological site is one of the World's most important points to better understand the Human Evolution. This is its importance; if you are not interested in such an issue, it "only" offers you the ruins of a medievel town, a seventh century old church and nice views to the gorge. You can find the original pieces (jaws and skulls) at Tbilisi National Museum, but being on the site is special.
