The views, the land, the frailejones and the water, all spectacular! We stayed at the Güicán de la Sierra hotel, with excellent service and super gentle attention (in addition to very delicious food). We went up on a Sunday at 6am with our guides (Toño, wonderful, and his companions). Throughout the entire journey you are surprised by the immensity of the world, of this corner of the world. The road is long, it is quiet until the Lagoon. From there, the path of the Rabbits becomes heavy but not exaggeratedly intense. Once at the top, when you see the snow-capped mountain in front, there is no turning back, you just have to continue forward. At that moment (already about 4 hours into the journey) it started to snow. The initial excitement dissipated due to the terrible cold that was beginning to cripple us, accompanied by a gale that only wanted to return us to the lake. We kept walking and walking, against the storm, we crossed the river of stones, always with the white goal what seemed like a step away (it was definitely not a step away).
But when you arrive nothing matters anymore, you arrived. You breathe white, cleanliness, water. Tears here and there because of the skepticism of having overcome that piece of mountain.
The cold scared us away. We fought for a while to enjoy and breathe the air at the top, but it defeated us and we had to go down.

Excellent crossing, unforgivable to stop doing it. Diversity of routes from hot springs and warm weather to snow and glacier. It is better to get to Guican as there are shorter distances and more and better attractions than in the Cocuy. Excellent attention and professionalism of the guides, ask about Luis Carlos Ussa, a thousand times better than a tourist agency. Guaranteed.

It was a fascinating experience, we had the best guides: Luis Carlos Núñez and Leonel Mora. Their experience, knowledge of the terrain, kindness, understanding, patience, hospitality and good energy made the trip more enjoyable. A thousand thanks to them. Service 11 out of 10, totally recommended.

We Hiked the trek out of season (late august).
Getting there - The road from Tunja deteriorates making it a long bumpy 8 hour journey but it is not a problem getting an overnight bus unless there has been a landslide and the journey passes quick enough
Safety - Met military on route. Seemed safe and everyone locally we asked confirmed it was safe
Kit wise - out of season take wellies (can buy in El Cocuy or Guican) as it can be very wet. Also make sure you have a decent tent, waterproof coat and at least 3 season sleeping bags as well as plenty of snacks.
The Weather - It was wet and cold at times (including snow on some high passes) and visibility was reduced at times as well yet we still got some terrific views and the low clouds gave an air of Mystery.
A Guide - I would recommend it especially if there are 2 or less of you as if something goes wrong on route you are really isolated and the path / route can be challenging. The route is generally marked by cairns and a path in places but can get tricky over boulder fields or when fog / mist sets in. HOWEVER we took a Venezualan guide from El Cocuy called Gustavo or Radio as he likes to be known. He provided plenty of warm food and could be friendly BUT we found his temperament very unpredictable and variable, sometimes he could be really quite rude. Also he got lost at least three times and then to top it off made some very questionable decisions - One being to cross right at the top of a flowing waterfall with a 100meter+ drop about 1 meter the other side of him. We told him not to but he continued, slipped and fell and very nearly went over the falls. Obviously this would have been terrible for him but would also have put us in a very serious situation with little food and no cooking kit. Another taking us up the side of a very steep, no path, scree mountain side, in a now storm, it was slow progress which meant we got cold and lost our way. The route was, unfortunately for us, very clear in the other direction but he refused to listen to our advice. I would strongly recommend avoiding this fellow if you do the trek (Guicani - on the square in El Cocuy) I think other guides can be found in El Cocuy or Guican as we met a couple in our time there.

Whether you are a weekend rambler or an experienced mountain man you'll find something to thrill you. Exceptional landscapes, unspoilt environment, walking, trekking or climbing 5000m peaks with the added plus of astoundingly helpful locals to stay with, be organised by or be guided upwards, this mountain region deserves the highest accolade.

We stayed at Hacienda La Esperanza in early December, 2013 and had a tremendous time. Before we arrived Guillermo was very responsive and quick to answer all of our preplanning email and telephone questions. Once we were at H.L.E. we felt like we were part of their family. His father picked us up in El Cocuy (for an additional fee) which meant we didn’t have to get up early for El Lechero and received an interesting introduction to the area. If you want to take El Lechero, it does come right to the Hacienda to pick up milk. We felt so welcomed to the H.L.E. family that we really didn’t want to leave. The food was great and hospitality very warm and welcoming. We enjoyed the proximity to the mountains, trailhead to Laguna Grande de la Sierra and great hiking. Guillermo went out of his way to help us with all of our hike planning, transportation, lunches and everything. Thanks so much to all of the family and staff at H.L.E.

This is absolutely stunning place. Starting from El Cocuy town and ending with Parque Nacional El Cocuy.
If you are not superfit guy/girl day-treks are very great opportunity to see the area.
I was able to do only trek to Lagunillas (which was very tough for me) and took much more than 6 hours. I did it with a local guide (60.000 COP/day) and do not regret even a bit. Only that I'm not so fit to see other day trek to Laguna Grande de la Sierra (~10-11 hours) which is supposed to be more spectacular. Lechero is a great way to feel local vibe and to see campesino's life. Although it is twice longer than car. Taxi to any Cabana within a park costs around 70.000-80.000 COP.

After trekking almost everywhere in South America (Missing Ecuador), this was the most reclude national park of all-time. I was there september 2017 and I met 2 other gringos in the whole park during 3 days! Very calm and unique nature down there

I did the hike to the summit with a guide. But we didn't meet anybody on the way. Where else can you hike in such a wonderful area all by yourself?

Hi. Right now the access to the snow and the peaks of the park are closed to the public.
You can visit Guicán, Boyacá and enjoy the view of the area and hike.
You speak portuguese and hey can understand you if you speak slowly, i did not saw any one speaking english ..
at day is like 20ºC and at night more cold.
You can travel by bus directly from Bogotá to Guicán , for about COP 50.000 ( US$20) one way , the bus takes about 10 hours
$1US about COP3000
I don´t know about the cost of trips or guided tour in the area, but i saw at hotel Brisas del nevado that they have tours.
make plans to stay for five days at Guicán, enjoy the sky at day and night !

saludos,
Michelle
