After jumping off the bus from Niedzica to Nowy Targ, I walked through the wooden houses of the village and ten minutes later reached the church. St Michael the Archangel church is a Gothic wooden structure dating to the 15th century, and together with other similar wooden churches throughout Lesser Poland it is a Unesco world heritage site. It is considered as among the best preserved of its kind in Poland, and one of the oldest, if not the oldest polychrome wood church in Europe. As my luck goes the church was unfortunately closed, and no way of finding someone who new if it would open or not as the village looked deserted; online I had seen that the church would be open only during the summer months so I enjoyed its beauty from the outside only.

Having done many a trip to the Zakopane & Dunajec area many times, I wasn't expected to discover something new! We hired a private driver, this time, and when he told me he was taking us to Debno, I really didn't know why. When we pulled up to this church - what a pleasant surprise!! Unfortunately, no pictures were allowed of the beautiful, hand-painted walls and decor, but suffice it to say, that it's worth a stop. The church dates back to the 15th century and the painting is comprised of 33 colors and 77 different patterns, including chinese & persian influences. The crucifix dates back to 1380, called the Tree Of Life. The entire structure was joined by notching and reinforced with spikes - no nail were used!

This wooden church dated back from 15th century is something you MUST see. We were unlucky because the church was closed. However we admired this masterpiece from the outside as much as we could see inside. Do not miss it!

Will the church be open for visitors on Monday, 27 May? Thank you

Too late for your trip this year - here are the opening hours: Mon-Fri 9am-12noon 2pm-4.30pm, Saturday 9am-12noon. "Sunday church open during church services only; no possibility of sightseeing! On rainy days church is not accessible due to high air humidity which is dangerous to the building."
