I grew up in Riverhead and when I was a kid, my dad would take us to the ocean to swim and pass by The Big Duck. Us kids would anticipate approaching the curve in the road and would shout out "I see the Big Duck !" in unison to see who saw it first. It was a big event for us little kids.

I remember stopping in with my father to buy eggs, giving me a chance to check out the inside of the store. It was tiny. There was a lot of other things hanging on the wall and I suppose it was memorabilia promoting The Big Duck. I vaguely remember getting my father to buy me one of those old painted postcards as a souvenir. I wonder where it is today?

The Big Duck was moved to a new location which I think was being developed as a local park, but was later moved back to its original location, much to my delight. I haven't lived in Riverhead for many years, but when I go back to visit, I still feel the excitement of approaching the curve in the road and yelling, "I see the Big Duck !"
My wife (from Boston) thinks I'm weird.

The majesty of The Big Duck cannot be overstated. Prior to arriving here, I was depressed and sad. But the moment The Big Duck came into view, I knew my sadness was a thing of the past. There is something whimsical and uplifting about The Big Duck that cannot be described in words, but it is an object of pure joy. Sadly, the store was closed when I got there, but I encourage all people to make the journey if they can. Find The Big Duck, and you will find the joy you have been seeking your entire life.

I've lived on Long Island for 15+ years and I've always wanted to go see this duck. Finally made it there yesterday on our way back from Riverhead. It you're into these cute roadside attractions like me, then you must stop by there. So adorable. After we took a million pictures outside, we went into the gift shop inside the duck. There was a wonderful lady inside who explained the entire history of the duck and showed us old pictures from back in the 1930's. We bought a whole bunch of souvenirs with the BIG DUCK on it (magnets, bookmarks, car magnets, postcards, etc.) I had a smile on my face the whole way home.

Before there were wineries... the east end of Long Island was known for 2 local products...potatoe farms and duck farms. This is an iconic roadside attraction from that bygone era.. like the giant ball of twine somewhere in the Midwest. The location has a cute inside souvenir shop and as others have stated... Great roadside restrooms. But as advertised, it is just a large concrete mache' duck. Small children look at in awe...as will the city passerbys on the route 24 shortcut to the Hamptons. Stop if you're in the vicinity, but not necessary for a out of the way excursions...unless you're a LIer with a nostalgic desire or looking for a diversion for the children

Yes it's a big duck. And yes, it has a gift shop inside as well as tourism info. But the best part are the clean bathrooms, with a changing table (also clean!) on the women's bathroom. Too bad they don't have one in the men's bathroom.

I remember the Big Duck very well. As a kid we had a house in Calverton. Every once in a while my dad had to go to Flanders Rd for something and we always passed the Duck. When we went to the drive-in we passed the Duck. Years later the Duck was moved. I then saw it was back in Flanders again. I made a special trip to find the Duck.Well The Duck is home. When I visited a few weeks ago it was closed...made me sad but I will be visiting again. The Big Duck brings back so many memories. I always smile when I think of the Duck.

I was excited for a visit to the big duck with my kids. I thought it would be a funny and quirky stop after our trip out to Montauk. To our disappointment, the duck was closed even though it was supposed to be open that day. There was no sign on the door indicating when it would re-open. We took a picture outside and went on our way. Disappointing.

After living on Long Island for 19 years I had always wanted to see the big duck. Well ok the bid duck wasn't as big as we thought it would be but it is part of Roadside America. today when we stopped there, there was a flea market/craft show. if you pair this with the Riverhead aquarium or or the Tanger outlets it would make a fun day.

This is a giant duck, like it says in it's title. Formerly the site of a duck farm (no more ducks, except for one "mascot", Roxy, I think) the people of this small town have taken the original property and turned it into a historic site, of sorts. The Big Duck houses a small gift shop with duck stuff you can buy. There is also a recently restored small barn with other historical stuff there. When we went for a recent visit to Long Island to see relatives we were able to attend the "Lighting of the Wreath" for the Big Duck. Lots of small town type fun, the local school choir was there and sang a few songs, hot chocolate was served, we bought a funny lit up Santa hat. Cold evening but a lot of fun just hanging out with the 200 or so locals who showed up. The local news team (Channel 12) was on site and filmed the whole thing, even the arrival of Santa on the local fire departments hook and ladder truck.
All in all a really good time whether it's at Christmas or not. Enjoy!

Visited on 9/13. A great place to stop if you are on your way to either the North of South Fork of Long Island, since it is located near Riverhead. The Duck is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The gift shop is great and has a lot of items, from Christmas ornaments to soccer balls. They accept credit cards. This is only a 5 minute or so visit, so probably not worth a long drive.
