Early morning Fish auction
Dec 2018
Reached around 5:30 am and experienced it . But please don't disturb their work for you want to take pictures and video. Just stay quiet and learn. People are quiet nice and they notice you are stranger among them and try to communicate and explain their exciting work.

forgetable

Not sure why this is well rated. Both fish and normal forgetable. Smells like .......not really worth the bother but then, there is not much to do in this town.

There were no tourists but us the morning we were here, and it was an eye-opening experience watching the fishermen bringing in baskets of fish in from the boats.

The fish were huge, and we watched the whole process of unloading, sorting, auctioning, displaying, and selling.

Our hearts went out to the little boys who seemed hired to carry huge baskets of seafood for their employers, but we did not want to treat them like beggars, so we just observed.

Very local experience, to me the best 'attraction' in sittwe

Big fish market in sittwe
Dec 2015
I love to be here in the weekend to hunt crab and prawn. The price is cheap but you need to have local friend to get best price. The environment is unique especially when fisherman, broker and seller start bargain fishes that just came from the boat. The fishes market is located inside of sittwe market. It is better visit in the morning at 6 -8 am.

nowhere is the same here

close to the sea and so many sea products are uniquely fresh and clean. you shall be strangely stared at by many locals as you look quite different to some of them. There are many wholesales and retails fish mongers as street vendors and many sellers in the market building. You will be attracted by this piscine market.

This is as authentic as it gets. Travellers and tourists are not prone to purchase seafood home and because of that, here, you truly get to see what local people tend to do. The pungent stench, the hustle bustle, the chaos, the drama, the boredom are all cast on people's faces there. There's a tendency for people to simply stare at you because we are such an unfamiliar sight at this part of Myanmar. Believe you me, Rakhine State, or where Sittwe is located, it's definitely worth making an effort to go to. You may find Sittwe to be the jumping point for you to get to yet another amazing destination, a backwater these days better known as Mrauk U. Highly recommended for the hardcore travellers.

The fish market (sittwe) was different from all others we saw throughout our journey in Myanmar. There were much more varieties of fish, eels, frogs, and snails there. The methods of drying the fish were also different than the fish processing in Mandalay. Fish paste seemed to be the number one biggest commodity there. It was interesting watching the larger commercial fishing boats try to come to shore to unload their catch. A middle man (water taxi) had to intercept and off load the fish in order for it to reach the market. A huge complex ammount of competition in the industry there.

If you like local markets, this is an interesting stop that is definitely unique on the market tour stops. Located along the water, this is the location that Rhakine state fish commerce begins. A large open air market that sells every kind of seafood you could possibly imagine. Some fresh, others that have been dried in the open air. It is very interesting seeing how trading takes place in this market as it is much different than others you may have seen. A short walk (maybe 100m) from the actual market is the docking and first place the fishermen move their stock. Better travelling earlier in the day you can walk down and see a bunch of fishermen bringing their catch a shore. The fishermen are not the ones selling the product in the market, rather once they reach the shoreline they offload baskets of catch and sell it to people on the land to be sold once again in the market just up the bank. The huge variety of fish they has is also interesting. I even saw one bring in some large blow fish.

If you like local markets I would recommend stopping here. Not that there is really much for you to buy, but it is interesting to see how these markets help their society roll smoothly.
