It was a great day seeing the magnificent redwoods. We were here in Nov which was nice. It wasn't crowded and the weather cooperated, no rain until late in the afternoon.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 4, 2023
- Erlinda CLong Beach, California115 contributionsA Must See if You Only Have Time to Drive Through the RedwoodsGorgeous drive through the Avenue of the Giants in Northern California. The drive is free and you can make several stops to check out the Giants up close. Also close to the Lost Coast road for a supplement activity, if you have time.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 16, 2024
- SharonBrigham City, Utah35 contributionsGiants Indeed!Amazing!!!! Majestic!!!! There is nothing like this drive. Be sure to stop and wander through Founder's Grove. I have heard complaints about the crowds and highway noise, but we experienced neither of these issues. Maybe it was because we were there on a weekday afternoon/evening before the "tourist season" really kicks off.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 10, 2024
- Kathy LPrior Lake, Minnesota498 contributionsBeautiful drive, great photo stops. This is a beautiful drive whether you want to stop and take a hike, or simply drive through the amazing redwoods. We stopped often and had lunch and covered everything we wanted to see in half a day. I will note that the road is closed between Miranda and Phillipsville due to bridge replacement. The drive takes you through some very large redwoods with lots of pull outs to take photos. The Founders Grove walk is half a mile and an easy walk (I will note that we are in our mid 60's and have bad knees). Though it isn't paved, the walk was still easy. Staying on the trail was a bit confusing at times, but we were able to figure it out. Grab a pamplet at the start of the walk and it will explain each of the 12 stops. Take a jacket if it is in the 50's as it can be breezy.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 17, 2024
- Ambassador6306882 contributionsMagnificent RedwoodsDrove through in a convertible for full effect of these magnificent redwoods. Great weather, traffic was non existent! It was Saturday! Maybe just lucky. You need to be a good driver as roads are so narrow. No photo captures these magical trees.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 22, 2024
- Tommy MRoseville, California2,891 contributionsUnbelievably beautiful is this special drive.Driving south on Highway 101, we headed for the Avenue of the Giants. Hopefully we would have breakfast somewhere along the way. But this special Avenue is very few roadside attractions. The roadway which was crowded with thousands of gigantic redwoods, was eerily quiet. It was like driving in a tunnel for much of the way. There was a little traffic on this famous road during our early morning sojourn. The scenic road was formerly part of Highway 101. The state highway was diverted around the Avenue of the Giants in 1960. It is worth taking the time to enjoy the scenic road. It's a beautiful drive.Visited August 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 7, 2024

We spent a day driving the Avenue of the Giants. Photos do no do justice to the size of the redwood trees. We stopped at several places to hike amongst the trees. There are a variety of trails to suit all levels of fitness and abilities. We packed a picnic lunch and ate in one of the groves. Highly recommend getting off the 101 and taking this scenic route, even if you are not planning to stop to hike.

If you are in a hurry, stay on highway 101. The average speed for Avenue of the Giants is about forty mph. Plus, you of course will want to stop the car to take pictures, maybe go for a hike or walk, and there are a few small towns along the way to check out.
For scenery, it's awesome. You are doing a driving tour through the redwoods. Sometimes you *must* pay attention to the road and not the trees, due to the twisting nature of the road. The road cuts so close to some of the trees, that there are reflectors or caution signs at those curves. But overall, it is a pleasant drive in some iconic trees. Allow at least a few hours for it, but if you need to exit, there are places along the way to get back to highway 101.
One other place we visited can rival it, Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway in the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Klamath. If you have a short amount of time, and you will be going by both, the latter is a better choice. Just as pretty, but shorter. We opted to see both because we had the time, and neither disappointed.

What an amazing drive! It was like stepping back in time to a slower more relaxed pace. I am always in awe of the size of the trees and their natural beauty so this drive was a bucket list item for both my husband and me. We took our time and stopped at a couple of places that really caught our eye. It took us a bit of extra time to get to our next stop, but we planned for that; in all fairness, we could have planned to allow even more time because it seems like there is more to see around every corner and just past every giant tree. This drive is one of the best parts of our entire west coast road trip and there are plenty of places to stop and have a beautiful lunch or snack.

We started on the north end of Avenue of the Giants and spent an afternoon just driving and stopping at any groves that look good. The problem became they were all really good. We ended up stopping and all of the larger named groves and then some just pull-outs along the road. I Don't think you will be disappointed and any stop. But I think the drive really is what made it. We had seen Sequoia's before but man the Redwoods really bring a different perspective to the word Majestic. I am glad someone decided to protect these massive trees and someone else gave everyone a chance to drive through and enjoy them.

Avenue of the giants is a stunning 32 mile scenic drive through magnificent redwoods and meandering eel river vistas. Plenty of groves where you can stop and go for a hike to admire Mother Nature’s incredible beauty. We stopped by the drive through tree but our vehicle ( VW Atlas ) was too wide. Still a drive worthwhile taking.

This is a must see attraction if you are in the area. Be mindful that there is some road work going on right now but it does not take away from you experience. There are no words that can fully express the magnatutude and majestic beauty of these trees. The road through the groves is amazing. You just cant get any closer to the trees and you drive along side of them. Well actually you can! There are a few places where you can drive THROUGH the trees. Do not miss a chance to experience this!

This was part of our 3-week road trip through Utah, Nevada, California and Oregon and is one of the prettiest drives that we have ever done! Avenue of the Giants is a 32 mile scenic drive that runs alongside Highway 101. This drive is completely shaded by giant redwood trees and passes through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. There are a number of campsites, picnic areas, river overlooks, and hiking trails along this drive. Avenue of the Giants is named for the coast redwoods that overshadow the road. A must see in Northern California

Accessible and free opportunity to walk among an old growth Redwood Forest in Northern California. This is a hidden gem and is without the frills and crowds of the Redwood National Park two hours north. The Avenue parallels Highway 101 for about 30 mi with numerous access points, if you do not want to drive the whole Avenue.
Set aside a half a day to browse the whole forest, or head to one of the numerous hiking loops at the major groves which are a half a mile average.
It is well known that time in a forest recharges the soul and has beneficial physiological effects. What a state and national treasure!

We will be taking a family trip to the west coast this summer, renting an RV to make the drive and plan to take Highway 101. Is the Avenue of Giants passable in an RV?
Written January 3, 2020
I see no reason why not. It is a highway and although there are no passing lanes there are pull outs and single lane traffic on both sides. Easy drive and I think you would have no problem. I used to own a class A motor home and I would drive if my memory serves me right.
Written January 3, 2020
Free. Only a limited number of special private attractions charge admission.
Enjoy!

I have no clue, we did not do any hiking. But we saw plenty of places indicating Trail Walks. There are 2 small, unmanned Visitors Centres along the way that offer a range of brochures that might be helpful to you.

Where are the closest places to rent bikes for a day of biking on the Avenue of the Giants?
Written May 31, 2018
Didn't see any bike rentals anywhere along the route. Maybe just go a cheap one at Walmart and give it to a local kid when you're done with it.

I have not gone down to the Eel River, but I have seen a large flat area next to the South Fork of the Eel River where a fair number of people have driven their cars down to. I don't usually see people tubing on the river though.
It is the Leatherwood Bar which is near Exit 663 going North on Hwy 101. If I understand it correctly, you take that offramp onto Dyerville Loop Road. BEFORE you get to Ave of the Giants there is a dirt road on the left that should lead you down to the Leatherwood Bar. You can check this out on Google Maps, but Streetview does not go down that dirt road, but you will see the junction between Dyerville Loop Road and the dirt road that should take you to Leatherwood Bar.
I hope this helps
I don't know if there are any facilities there, but there are restrooms at the nearby Founders Tree parking area.

Hello,
We'll be here next Fall. I was wondering if could suggest a hotel or cottage to stay in close to the park. The following day we'll be heading up to the Willow Creek area.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks !

We stayed in Eureka which was about a half hour north of the Avenue of the Giants. There are several hotels there. The Best Western Plus Bayshore Inn was pleasant with a room by the garden area. Hope you have a lovely trip.
