Hill top temple with serene surroundings
Mar 2019 • Couples
This is a Durga Devi temple managed by Sri Adamaru Matt. Huge temple complex and has lot of facilities for performing religious functions. It has a large dining hall too. Visited this place during our trip to Udupi which is 11 kms away. Beautiful statue of Goddess. Since the temple is situated at an elevated place, surroundings are beautiful. Even Manipal is visible from here.

It’s believed that great Hindu Acharya, Sri Madhvacharya, used to visit this hill frequently from his home which is close by (2kms), now known as Pajaka Kshetra. There’s also a tall statue of this Acharya, installed on the way to this temple. Nice place to visit with family/friends just for an outing.

Divine experience

Kunjarugiri is a hill situated around 11km from Udupi Krishna Matha. It is easily accessible by road. Autos can be hired from Udupi. Vehicles can go right up to the temple on the hillock. Alternatively there are around 250 steps to climb, if one wishes to.

Sri Durga Devi here was installed by Lord Parashurama himself and that makes this temple that much more special, apart from the fact that Sri Madhwacharya spent a large part of his childhood here. Regular pujas go on from 5:30am onwards. The surroundings of the temple are very serene and scenic. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Udupi. The responsibility of administration and puja kainkarya lies with Udupi Sri Admaaru Matha, currently headed by Sri Sri 1008 Sri Vishwapriya Tirtha Swamiji.

Close by lie the four Tirthas (Holy ponds) created by the Lord. And Pajaka, the birthplace of Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya is less than a kilometre away.

Hilltop Goddess Temple

Kunjarugiri is located around 10 Kms from main city of Udupi. It is around 2 Kms from Pajaka Kshetra where Philosopher Sri Madhwacharya was born & spent his childhood. The temple is located on the hilltop. Lord Parashurama constructed this temple. There is a very good motorable road to the top of the temple. The temple is very well maintained and Pooja’s & rituals are performed as per laid down procedures. There are four thirthas surrounding the temple called Dhanus, Gada, Parashu & Bana.

A Beautiful Temple
Jan 2017 • Friends
We visited this temple by car from Udupi -- about 11 kms distance. Its off the village of Katpady, which is on the National Highway from Mangalore to Udupi and Goa.

The temple is on a hill known as Kunjarugiri, by which name this temple is popularly known. There are steps to climb up the hill to the temple. There is also a good motor-able road up to the top.

From the top of the hill, one gets a beautiful view of the lush green coastal area of Karnataka, and the Arabian sea. As it is a little away from Udupi, there were very few people on a weekday evening. It was very serene in the temple and its surroundings, with a gentle sea breeze. The temple is well kept and the main building was being repainted.

It is well worth a visit, especially as one can also visit Pajaka Kshetra, the birth place of Madhwacharya, just 1/2 km away.
