- Tim WElimbah, Australia449 contributionsGreat art, easy access with bonus lookoutIn my opinion, the best aboriginal rock art at Kakadu and the most easily accessible. There are a number rock art sites accessible via easy tracks and platforms. The large cave site is stunning. An added bonus is the short walk to the lookout with some nice views. Highly recommendVisited April 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 20, 2024
- AglassortwoMelbourne, Australia267 contributionsNourlangie/AnbangbangAnother interesting place to visit is Burrungkuy/Nourlangie, not far from Jabiru. The path in to the Anbangbang rock shelters is mostly shaded and the huge caverns of slanting rocks with galleries of art are very striking. The lightning man or Namarrkon is a prominent figure here. Nearby is the Gunwarrde lookout which is well worth the short climb for more great views of the surrounding country.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 24, 2024
- Wayne DomaschenzBallarat, Australia385 contributionsUbirr or Nourlangie, maybe both or just one ?We found it ok but not as good a Ubirr, if you were doing Cahills Crossing, I think there is no need to do this one unless you had extra time to fill. It’s best to go early morning to avoid the heat and beat the busses, we found it shady and not to hot9.30 -10.30 am, took about 45 minutes going easy and ready everything. The artwork was ok but a bit dull and old compared to Ubirr, but they have there own stories and both a bit differentVisited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 5, 2024
- wmcd_149 contributionsAwesome rock art and sunset lookoutWhat a place - we got there about 4:30pm and took a nice, well-signposted walk past different aboriginal rock art galleries, with beautiful parrots, coloured pigeons etc around. Then we drove 2lm round to the Naruwlandja lookout just in time for sunset catching the stunning red rocks. Hardly anyone else there, very peaceful. And public toilets and bins at the carpark.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 30, 2024

It is a sealed road into Nourlangie so this tends to be a busy spot with the bus tours coming here.
There is a main, well maintained up and back access track which the tours follow: to avoid the crowds, follow the more convoluted circuit walk that in itself is far more interesting.
The rock outcrop is spectacular and there are good scenic viewpoints from the circuit walk.
Expectations of the art work were high and it did not quite match up: in my opinion, Ubirr is far more interesting from that perspective.

It was hot hot hot when we did this walk so we appreciated walking the short loop up through the shade of the rock area (which should not be called Nourlangie Rock either from what I understand). It is a beautiful, peaceful place and you can feel the generations of Aboriginal people before you. Precious.

This is a special experience. The aboriginal art here tells a narrative of creation and family which should be seen and slowly savoured. The walk to see the main art site is quite short and has good shade coverage from the rock and trees. Longer walks are available. Seeing the rock from near by Nawurlandja Lookout at dusk and watching the colour changes was spectacular. This lookout walk is only short, about 20 minutes, and you can see the bird life over Anbangbang billabong from there also. The billabong is a nice stop for lunch and you can drive to picnic tables.
Go to Nourlangie and see the lookout and billabong too.
I recommend an afternoon as the best time, give it a good amount of time like a half day and respect this special place.

Most of the walking tracks are closed in Kakadu at the moment but the track around Nourlangie Rock was open. The gate opens at 8 am but when we arrived it obviously had not been closed. Otherwise we would have been there earlier. The climb around the base of the rock has stairs in the difficult sections and most of the walk is relatively easy. The aboriginal art is well defined and the stories are well documented on plaques. Early morning the colours on the rock was quite stunning. An enjoyable walk.

This rock art site is amazing which is a short walk through the rock art sites and there is some stairs in certain sections. The plaques explaining the art is so well written and informing of the stories told. Make sure you go to the lookout as you will see the beautiful landscapes of the area. This is the place to start the Barrk walk which is a must do if you love long walks.

We visited at the end of the wet season. This is one of the few places open.
Make sure you add it the the list. A great walk, ancient rock art and then a smaller lookout as part of the walk. About 1km up the road is the more steep lookout where you can sit on the rock and watch the sunset.
As the visitor centre sends everyone here for great sunsets expect a crowd most days but it is well worth the walk (it’s quite steep though and around 300m not suitable for elderly).

This is a wonderful place to visit to gain insight into Australia’s ancient art tradition and the integral relationship between art, country and culture.
A gorgeous place to visit with relaxing cool rock shelters and magnificent views across the Kakadu escarpment. Even without a guide signage allows an excellent initial insight into Australia’s incomparable ancient art heritage

We came as part of an overnight tour to Kakadu with AAT Kings. One of the other sites we were scheduled to visit was not accessible due to an indigenous ceremony so we visited Nourlangie. I’d done a spectacular plane ride over Kakadu earlier in the day so it was great to see Nourlangie from the ground. The highlights are some amazing rock art displays including the Anbangbang gallery and shelter, with cave paintings over 20,000 years old, and a short loop trail which takes you to the Kunwarddewardde lookout for a few over the Arnhem Land escarpment with sandstone cliffs and savanna woodlands extending for miles (amazing from the air as well).

Easily accessed site with a gentle 1.5km loop walk. 4 or 5 locations to view glorious rock art, including the famous and strange Lightning Man. A sign asks visitors not to photograph this section. An additional 5 minute walk takes you to a great lookout. Along with Ubirr this is a must see art site in Kakadu.

Our group took the hike up Nourlangie Rock to view the wonderful Rock Art sites. There is a steep section to the hike, but very manageable. The Rock Art is very interesting and is thousands of years old. Please be respectful of the wishes of the area when taking photographs. There is parking, toilets and water available. When up near the top of teh rock, one can get a goof view over the land. if you are there in June, you can see the kapok trees with their yellow flowers. Spend a couple hours, or bring a picnic and make it a day. It is not a place for small children as the walk is too rugged.
