A little sceptical about this trip as we just stopped off for a coffee...superb coffee! However we did do it....fascinating 45 minute tour down cave an old river bed....lots to see and moa bones. Need good shoes and short ladder (quite safe) to get back out into a field behind the cafe. Well worth a stop off and views superb.

This was an interesting small cave. The trail through it is not for those with unsteady footing, the infirmed or very young children as you must climb a rather long ladder to get out. The moa bones were an interesting sight, and a leg bone was passed around (It was indeed large.) You see stalactites and their actual formation. Our... More

Ngarua Caves is absolutely fascinating. Guide was brilliant, filled with knowledge. Well worth a visit and extremely cheap for what you get at only $20 for an adult and the walk through the caves taking 45 min and is a pretty easy stroll but not suited to disabled. Lovely cafe a bit disappointed at the souvenirs. Bought 3 fridge magnets... More

Very well priced at only $20 per adult. It was nice to be in such a small group of only 6 people. Our guide was very informative and knowledgeable. The tour takes approximately 45 minutes. The caves are beautiful. Walking through them is relatively easy and we never felt rushed to keep up with the group. The lighting and paths are... More

An absolutely fascinating cave tour and relatively cheap. The caves are situated 2000 feet above sea level and are amazing with numerous stalactites and highlights the area famous for it's high quality marble. The caves are illuminated in sections as you proceed on the tour. The guides are knowledgeable, friendly and share a concern for conservation. skeletal remains of the... More

We drove from Nelson with this cave a must visit in mind. It is not well sign posted until you get very close to the cave when you see a small board saying "Cave & coffee". The trick to find the cave is that you stay on SH60 until you see the "Cave & coffee" board. You will find the... More

The guide Ben's recitation felt a bit stilted, but it was still an enjoyable and informative visit. Because this cave has been used for tourism in guided visits since it was first discovered in 1876, it is reasonably well preserved. Easy walk through, with one short ladder at the end.

Great cave system with moa bones that you can actually handle. The guide was extremely knowledgable and plesant. Well worth a visit. The cafe there was also excellent.

As we arrived for the 10am tour there was just us (me, wife, 5yo son) and another couple. We had stopped in the previous afternoon to check it out and the lady in the shop was incredibly friendly and helpful - giving us lots of tips about the area despite the fact we weren't buying tickets at the time. Our... More
