We had a 2D1N adventure from Cat Ba around Halong Bay and the adjoining islands.
The team at Cat Ba Ventures made sure everything went smoothly for our family of four (2 boys 8 & 6) and we also used them to source transportation from our hotel in Hanoi to Cat Ba, and the return journey to Hanoi Train Station.
They were fantastic at keeping us informed of our choices and up to date with our plans.
The adventure itself was magical, great family room on the boat, delicious food for the meals, kayaking, swimming, laughing and generally an amazing time was had.
We were lucky to share the trip with a bunch of like-minded individuals who welcomed our family in, and our tour guide Hien was AWESOME!!
If you want to travel around the bay, and your requirements are similar to ours, we are happy to recommend them, and the trip itself.

I got to know about Cat Ba Ventured as it was mentioned in my Travel guide and I booked the trip beforehand via email - the process was very simple and the people from the office were very friendly and responsive. The tour itself I did with my boyfriend and two friends and we got our own private boat with the chef, the captain and our amazing tour guide Cong. He is the most amazing guide you can imagine - incredibly knowledgable about the area and limestone, he knew exactly where to take us for non-touristy experiences. The kayaking and swimming spots were very well chosen as the landscape was beautiful and not many (if at all) people were there. We did an overnight cruise and in the evening Cong also sat together with us and told us a bit about the history of Vietnam and current situations. We all really enjoyed listening and leaning so much about Vietnam’s culture and past. The experience of waking up on a boat in the middle of breathtaking scenery and limestones all around you is worth every penny. If you compare the price with other providers it might seem a little more expensive than others, but the experience is definitely worth it, one of my favourite activities in Vietnam.

We did the 2 Day 1 Night cruise of Lan Hay Bay with Cat Ba Ventures and were so impressed! We were hesitant to do one of these cruises, after so many negative reviews about how touristy and "full of trash" the areas surrounding Ha Long Bay are. We were so pleased that with Cat Ba Ventures we went to so many hidden gems, and were most of the time the only boat in that area!
They were also super accommodating to our vegetarian/plant based diets, and the meals on board were delicious. Our tour guide "King Cong" was AWESOME! He was from the Cat Ba area, and was so knowledgable about everywhere that we went. It was nice to visit these beautiful places, kayak through the caves, but also to learn about the history of Cat Ba Island and Vietnam.
We definitely recommend this 2 day/1 night cruise, but they also have more affordable day trips with kayaking which are awesome too.

We did the 1N/2D tour along La Han and Ha Long Bay. The tour is rather non-touristic which is very comfortable (small group on board). The program was not exactly as described but all in all this was fine for us. The staff was friendly our guide was well experienced. The food on board was delicious and the cabin was comfortable even when the boat looked a bit older. All in all we can recommend Cat Ba Venture for a Ha Long boat tour.
One negative fact was the transfer we booked. We decided to book the private transfer back to Hanoi as we thought this would be more comfortable and faster. Compared with the regular transfer only the private car instead of bus was different but the price was 4 times higher. Therefore we can not recommend a private transfer. Just take the regular one by bus and ferry.

Very satisfied with this half-day hiking trip. Somehow I had imagined the trip to be mostly hiking with a quick photo stop at the Hospital Cave thrown in on the way to the national park. But to my pleasant surprise, the stop at the Hospital Cave was a comprehensive tour guided by the hiking guide himself. Overall, the mix of activities was just right for me. The friendly guide was knowledgeable and very pleasant. I was the only one who booked this tour, so it was in effect a private tour for me, which meant I had to pay more than I would have to otherwise, and had to go to the national park on a motorbike (to be exact, sitting at the back of the guide’s motorbike), but also that I had the undivided attention of the guide and could ask lots of questions!

I went on a 2D/1N boat trip in the beginning of january.
The scenery is beautiful and the places to kayak were great. The atmosphere on the boat was very nice and everyone had a good time together. Our group were small, which probably made the experience even better. The rooms were nice and the vegetarian food was good.
The night was spent in a bay close to other boats, but with no noise from them.
The guide, Cong, was very friendly, spoke very good English and told a lot of interesting things about Vietnamese culture and history. If you can, ask to get him as your guide.
I would recommend going on this trip!
However, I drove with the CatBa ventures bus from Cat Ba to Ninh Binh. The bus was good and the staff friendly, but driver drove very bad and were in the other side of the road most of the time to overtake. He made the cars in the opposite direction stop completely, because they would otherwise crash. So I cannot recommend the busses.

We had a perfect overnight tour on a small private boat, there were just the captain, the cook, the guide and us two. The first day we were lucky with the weather, sunshine and just a few clouds, so we could take some really nice pictures. We did some kajaking and had time to relax on the sundeck. The second day, it was misty and we also had a little rain, but we could also do some kajaking in this amazing area. It was interesting to experience the bay at different weather conditions!
All the meals were very good, we also tried some new food for us (crabs for example). We could not eat all up because it was so much.
For us, it was the right decision to pay a little more but therefore to have a private tour. So we could learn much about the area and whole vietnam from our guide, but we also had private time just for us two.
And they kept their promise to go to the less crowded areas, most of the time we only saw few boats and also when kajaking, we always went at the best time where we were nearly alone in the lagoons.
So we truly can recommend Cat Ba Ventures and this tour to everyone!

We did the 2 days 1 night boat trip with Tony and it was great! We went around lan ha bay and Ha long bay first in a smaller boat and then a bigger boat for the evening and 2nd day. There was only 8 of us in the group (they can take up to 20) so this made it pretty special! Tony, our guide, for the 2 days was fantastic, he made sure we had everything we needed and was an awesome kayak guide! Over the 2 days we did 2 trips out in the kayak, one was about an hour and half and the other 2 hours. Would definitely recommend Cat Ba Ventures for this kind of trip from Cat Ba and keep your fingers crossed you get Tony as your guide :)

We can't fault our cruise around Lan Ha and Halong Bay. We saw so much, it was really well organised and the setting was nothing short of magical. We barely saw any other boats yet the scenery was still very dramatic and the water was clear. The food was also delicious and the portions were generous. The guide spoke very impressive English too. If you book with them, do ask questions as the guides are very knowledgeable about this fascinating area.

We did the 2 day cat ba Tour to see these amazing rocks, lagoons and caves around ha long! The company can show you some not so overcrowded touristic places and make your trip special. We had a really really great guide Toni (🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼). Beside the Kajak trips🤩, he is always there and super friendly. He teaches us interesting cultures aspects of Vietnam which I loved to hear!
The sleeping boat is very clean, AC and private bathroom! The food of the crew was delicious, also for vegetarians.
Please bring also money in cash to buy your drinks like beer or coke, water is included. The company is very well organized and even helped us to rebook our bus last minute to another city!

I've read the bungalows on Nam Cat Beach are pretty terrible (poor service, dirty, unsafe planks). Can anyone speak to this?
Also what did people use for traveling from Hanoi? Was it cheaper to arrange it yourself or through the agency? Thanks!

Can only advise re transport. Use private car or train to Hai Phong and use fast cat ferry to Cat Ba. Also can use bus to Cat Ba. I suggest you check with Catbaventures which I found quite good re accom and travel. John B. Brisbane

We only have available boat trip - Kayaking to Lan Ha - Ha Long Bay start from Cat Ba town at 8am and return Cat Ba town at 5pm.
So if you stay in Hai Phong and do the boat trip and need to return Hai Phong in the same day, we only offer a private group for you.

I'm so sorry for not having replied to your questions earlier, I'm barely online here so I just saw it now. No idea if it's still helpful, you probably booked something already. If not: we had the following tour LAN HA BAY – HA LONG BAY – BAI TU LONG BAY: Boat trip - Kayaking 3days/2 nights. Most of the time we did some kayaking with our great guide Tomi, because we went through a lot of caves. But he told us we can go on our own whenever we want and on the last day we went kayaking alone. They give you a program as a suggestion, but you can always ask to change things. If you need any more help just let me know.
