It is a very long and difficult and steep uphill trek to this castle. Do not attempt it if you have mobility issues. Our complaint is that we made it up to the top only to find that it was CLOSED! It only opens in the summer for specific exhibitions. We did not see the sign at the bottom by the car park mentioning this in small print - not obvious at all. Also what is their definition of summer?! It is not explained on the internet links either. I have compromised on 3/5 because the castle is attractive and the views over the valley and mountains are really good! I recommend a much more obvious sign saying CLOSED with clear date information.

I followed a long trail uphill to Ussel castle that towered over the valley. I stopped at a farmhouse style inn just in front of the castle that had closed for lunch and gave me coffee and a snack of dubious quality. The castle was impressive from the outside though and a rather unique block construction. Interesting but not the highlight of my visit to the castles of the Aosta valley.

The entire Aosta Valley is strewn with these wonderful stone monuments. This one is particularly grand.

A great monument of medieval epoch, unique monoblock castle. Unfortunately, the castle was closed without any explanation. I can only enjoyed fantastic views on valley, ten kilometers to both sides, and green surrounding village. The castle itself built on granite rock, directly on cliff, so you can't go around. i was very disappointed impossibility to come inside the castle.
