A must see excursion
Nov 2019
This is a day trip that will take you about 1 hour to get there from Ioannina. We went with family but you can definitely rent a car and do this trip on your own. The scenery is beautiful and in the fall with the leaves changing colors it is quite exquisite.

Pretty town
Sep 2019 • Couples
This traditional mountain town has cobblestone streets, stone buildings and roofs, and lots of charm. Old women in their traditional Sunday embroidered outfits, men sitting with their walking sticks in the Central square chatting. Be sure to go into the beautifully decorated Church. Lots of atmosphere

Pleasure

We stopped in this little mountain village on our trip to Lefkada. It is charming! The food is fantastic at any tavern and the landscape is fantastic!
It's an hour trip by car to Meteora.

I have been several times in Metsovo. Whenever I visit the square I always have the feeling that historical events took place over here. Apart from that I like this place as it is crowded by all ages.

Such a lovely place!
Aug 2019 • Family
Each time we went to Metsovo we admired its Central Square. It simply has a charm of it's own, I guess. I am talking as a pedestrian now, because I know that it can be quite tricky to drive around... Although as far as I can remember, getting to the Central Square by car is not impossible, at all.

My favourite place here is the park overlooking the beautiful Pindus Mountains where you can sit on a bench and admire the scenery and the highway from above which makes cars appear as small toys 🙂

Of course, there are a lot of souvenir shops around, as well, along with numerous places to eat.

It is also a good place to start a nice walk through the climbing paths inside the village, in order to enjoy its amazing architecture and cozy details.

The heart of the village
Jul 2019 • Friends
This the heart of Metsovo, a village that managed to maintain its traditional stone architecture, which used to be typical for the mountainous regions of Epirus, a place once famous for its stone masons: many buildings here have the traditional schist stone roofs, rather than the tile ones. The place is busy with many restaurants serving local food. The main church of the village, saint Paraskevi, is located here. Some of the decoration inside belongs to past centuries, so take a few minutes to visit it.

There is a hill in the square which is called Kastro (castle): this is where the village fortress once stood. On its foot there is a monument to the brown bear of Pindos, this majestic mammal that now only counts 350-400 individuals in Greece divided in two populations, with the largest one living in this area. If you plan to venture into its habitat take a few minutes to read the instructions of what to do if you encounter one (hint: do NOT run). On the Kastro hill there are benches, trees and other plants and a statue of Evangelos Averoff, the politician, great local benefactor and visionary, to whom Metsovo owns that today is a touristic destination rather than an abandoned mountainous village. The statue stands with its back to the Averoff painting gallery, which houses part of his personal art collection. On this side of the hill there is also a work of modern art called the pathway, which imitates steps.
There are many shops in the square which sell local products. If you like smoked cheese, do not miss the famous metsovone. My personal favourite, however, is the metsovella. I also bought local pasta, which I had tried (and loved) the previous night in a tavern. Credit cards are accepted.

I was in the square on a Sunday and it was bustling with people. I liked very much that I saw many locals just hanging out there: an old woman, who had just been in church, was dressed in the traditional attire of the area. This tradition, of getting dressed in your best attire and just hang out in the centre of the village, once prevalent in all Greek villages, is now very much dead, except, I guess, in these remote villages.

Really cute mountain Greek town
Sep 2018 • Couples
Hard to beat this slice of the real Greece. Lots of shops, some touristy stuff,
But the town is the real deal.

A bit out of the way but worth it

Classic Greek village including the Lil' Ole men sitting
Sep 2018 • Family
I LOVED this city! Classic Greek village, the square came alive at night with every generation represented and in there place (men on the bench or taking a stroll, kids playing in the park, etc). But even in the morning it was so quaint with the Father/Priest out greeting his flock. I could have sat her for hours and people watched (which is likely what the old men were doing). Lots of restaurants and I wish I remembered the name of the one we went to. The food was wonderful and so was the service (see picture). The owner gave us a a small flan/pudding for dessert . It was a wonderful night.

Crowded and disappointing
Sep 2018 • Couples
When I first came here 20 years ago Metsovo was a rare pearl. Now It became ugly. So commercial and noisy. I'll never come back again.there are hundreds better places in Greece. No parking. Traffic jam all the way. Heavy smoke of burned meat all over..yak
And I also got a 40 euros ticket for parking, God know why.
