We stopped in for directions and 3 hrs later I was still there. The old machinery , cars ,trucks ,tools will leave you speechless . everything works and is a credit to Fred and his mates. This place is a must see.

Went to camp for a night in Feb with a tent and my dog in my 2wd hatchback. managed to do the gravel road from herberton in 30 mins, wouldnt try if its wet though. Nice owner at theTavern and explained a lot of history...More

Great spot would be good to stay the night in the free camp by the river opposite the pub. Lots of things to see highly recommend the museum

Fantastic free camping at the common opposite the Pub. Clean toilets and shower facilities for a gold coin donation. There was even cut wood piled up for our fire. Graham and Sue at the pub were wonderful hosts and cook a great steak. Be sure...More

The museum is staffed by knowledgeable volunteers. The building itself is wonderful and well worth the drive. I can't imagine the challenges faced by John Moffat when he developed the mine, battery and smelter in the late 1800s. Sadly the actual mine area is off...More
