The falls are beautiul and defintely a must visit however once you enter the main gates there is a atleast 15 minutes walk down the hill to the base of the falls. The government charges tickets for the entrance however it seems nothing has been done provide a convenient access and providing decent sitiing area at the base of the falls. In fact core of the falls is quite away once you go down and is very difficult to access. You need to jump over big stones and boulders. I could not take that risk with my mall kid. Its compltely insane how you charge tickets and earn revenue however expect people to jump over the big boulders... all across the globe authorities have made sure that access ways are convenient not just for yong for accessible for elderly as well. but thats something you can expect from Indian tourism... So once you are back up again you might second thoughton coming back to this place again...Its around 2 hrs driven from kochin so this would be a full day local tour...

Hi friends ,
This review is not about Athirappally water falls but about a travel route connecting athirappaly to valpparai in tamilnadu .For those who like forest, adventure and driving , I recommend this route .
Athirapplay -valpparai forest route is one of the shortcut road to valpparai for those who travel from cochin or kottayam rather than going trough usual pollachi-valpparai route.

Road starts from famous athirappay waterfall and goes through dence forest ( via peringal kuttu, anamalai reserve forest) for about 45-50 kms . Eventhough I couldn't spot any wild animals , this route is considered as a paradise for wildlife sighting, especially elephants .

Road condition is bad for about 30 kms with no roads at many places, but can be managed with a small car. This is very narrow road which goes through un populated areas. Eventhough we covered the entrire streatch in a Ford-Fiesta ,an SUV/jeep or travelling in a group will be the best option .
As there is no mobile coverage , repair facilites or human habitats through out the streatch ( except at few places where the journey starts ), it will be better if the trip is planned during day time. There is one bus service in this route , which starts at 2:PM from Athirapally .
If you are travelling with family make sure that the vehicle is in good condition and followed by aother vehicle. At few places road is very narrow ,that givng way for vehicles coming in the opposite direction will be difficult.
Peringal kuttu reservoir , Sholayar dam ad resrvoir are en route.Thick lust green forest and the lonliness( fear too) ,we felt durng that entrie trip was a memmorable experiance .

A 2 hour drive from Kochi city or an hour drive from Kochi airport, you'll reach this magnificent craft of nature. Situated in the Sholayar ranges, it's wonderful place to be. Well connected by roads, it's a frequently visited place by domestic and international travelers. Roads are much better now than my previous visits. In rainy season, it shows it's full spate and it's a wonderful scenery. Standing on the top of the falls you'll see a nice rainbow all the time when ther's sunshine. Climb down to the fall bottom and enjoy the water spray. The naturality is well protected by authorities while improving facilities. Take care while taking bath in the falls. It's dangerously slippery. Drive 5 minutes up the falls through the forest and you'll reach another falls named Vazhachal falls where it's much safer to have a bath.

In order to visit the waterfalls, you need to purchase tickets from the booth along the route, not at the entrance of the attraction. It is not recommended to go to the base of the falls, especially after the rains as there could be a lot of leeches around.

Once there, the walk can be a little tiresome. Distance is not really a problem, but the inclines can be a little taxing. You will encounter a lot of monkey's near the top of the falls, and they tend to entertain all the visitors.

The park is also famous for the birds in the area, and if you are an avid bird spotter, there are a lot of species that you can see there.

You are recommended to wear shoes with good grips, and if possible, shoes that cover the feet and ankles, just to protect yourself from leeches, if any. Light clothes are recommended as the area is a little humid and the overall atmosphere can be a little sticky.

A camera is definitely recommended. There are small snack outlets inside the area, serving ice-cream, which was most people opted for. The drinks were not cold as they did not have any that was refrigerated.

You could spend about an hour and a half over there, depending on how far across the area you would want to explore. As soon as you exit, there are lots of souvenir shops, snack stalls and small restaurants where you can regain your energy.

Went there during dry month of April but still there was enough flow of water to waw you. An awesome fall amidst a thick forest. A splendid and frightening view of the mighty fall. Please take extra caution to not enter the water or take a bath in it as the rocks are so slippery, it will tempt you but keep a safe distance. Once you reach the fall take the downward path that will lead you to the downside of the falls which gives you a spectacular view and also can experience the massiveness of the falls. The entrance fee is 30 Rs per person with 20 Rs for photography. In a nutshell a must see waterfall.
