We did the boat trip to Brehat from L'Arcouest, Ploubazlanec. It is well worth the few extra euros to do the crossing plus the trip round the Ile de Brehat which takes about 45 minutes rather than the direct route of ten minutes . Great views of the island giving you a real feel for it before you get there. Have been told by someone living locally that it is packed in high season so probably best to avoid then.
We parked for free but they were in the process of building car park barriers so sadly does not look like it will be free parking much longer .
Really recommend the trip to Brehat which is so quiet and peaceful .

The island was full of flowers and shrubs, it was a beautiful place. The amount of tourists and their dogs foul the place. Idyllic countryside filled with tourists, holiday cyclists, and dog poo. We went there as there was not much to do in Ploubazlanec. The boat ride was only 10 mins and cost 10.50 euro return each person was pricey. The islanders were very polite and tolerant to tourists. The footpaths was easy enough to all ages but some parts did go up and down a bit. The little chapel in the middle was a bit of a climbing steps but it was a high viewing point of the whole island. Overall it was a good day if you have nothing else to do.

You have the choice between a direct ferry ride from the main land to the Island (15 minutes 10euros for return trip) or a longer "tour" around the island. When we visited we were advised the tour boat required at least 15 people and since we wanted as much time to visit the island as possible we opted not to wait and just took the direct ferry.
We were please to discover the ferry ran more often than the schedule posted on the website. We left at hide tide which meant a very short walk to the ferry on the mainland and a very short walk from the ferry to the streets of town. We returned at low tide and walked an additional 15-20 minutes to the ferry on the island. Note you return to the same departure point on the island and then walk along a very long but easy path along the water to the ferry. The map picked up at the tourist information in the centre of town gives the impression you can take a "short cut" to the ferry dock at low tide but this is not the case. The Tourist information offer can also advise of which ferry dock you will be using for your return trip. This will help plan how much time you need to walk back to the dock (remember the low tide dock is at least 15-20 minutes further!)

Have some English and German translation of the commentary. My wife and I did not understand any of what the guide said for the whole 45 minutes of the ferry tour around the island. Pretty much a waste of money as it was also very crowded and we could not even see a lot.

I had a terrible experience on the return trip from Bréhat yesterday evening. I suffer from adenomyosis (a gynecological condition) and needed to change my protection suddenly and urgently just as we were disembarking. I was in the toilet for 3 minutes. I came out to find the boat 1 metre from the quay where my family were waiting. My husband (French) begged the captain and crew to wait a minute but they refused. I had to go back to the island, wait for the boat to reload with passengers and then come back to the mainland. The captain then used the public announcement system to humiliate me in front of a boat full of passengers to tell me that I should have looked above my head at the notice to say the toilets were out of bounds at the quayside.
This service is a monopoly, profit is their sole objective and they obviously give little thought to their duty of care to clients. I will be writing to the direction and the Maison de Tourisme to complain and to ask what procedures they will put in place to stop this happening again. I could have been trapped in the toilet, nobody came to check or to warn me the boat was leaving. I am shocked and humiliated and am appalled that a company could treat it's clients in this way.

On a secondary note, Bréhat is totally overwhelmed by tourists in August. If you are looking to get away from crowds avoid the island like the plague. You get the same views from the mainland without the Disneyland park experience.

Don't just take the straight shuttle, but take the 45mn to be boated around the islands for a great view that you won't get hiking or biking once you are on the islands.
Comfortable good-sized boat that was good for the whole family whether on the outside roof with the windy open air or in the downstairs covered cozy seats.

For a modicum additional sum versus a return-traversal you get a tour of the island with explanations. Unfortunately it is (as in some other parts of Brittany) exclusively in French. We enjoyed the visual part of it but got approx. 30 % of the explanations (that is our grasp of French). I assume that for many others it even less. Translations in several languages are now expectedon many tours and if not available you should be at least advised about it when booking.

Much to expensive. Probably due to a lack a fair competition. A shame for the rest of Brittany! Here is an example of monopolism. What a pitty that one organisation can tke such an influance. I you only could avoid?!

The direct route of 15 minutes is the most regular crossing. For the boat tour of the island there is a minimum requirement of passengers.
The day we went, the car parks were full at the point of departure and costs 4.50.
There were so many people visiting that the ferries were running more regulkarly then the timetable.
A little expensive at 42 Euros for 4 people.

As a family with a small dog we booked the tour around the island. Fabulous. We really enjoyed seeing all of the sights before we set foot on the ile. Commentary in French but quite fuzzy so although I am quite fluent I struggled to follow. We had a lovely walk to the chapel as recommended by the tour guide, a picnic on the beach and drinks in pleasant surroundings. Kouign Amman from the bakery pricey but delicious. Very efficient on return leg - lots of boats so the queue of tourists deserting the island very quick and well managed. On arrival at Plouzanvec (?) car park awful! Hordes of people queuing to pay for tickets to be able to leave. One machine broken and many trying to pay by card- no visible management about and Mairie closed at 5 - after 1/2 hour queuing and no progress in queue poor young lady in high viz jacket appeared - gave up and opened the gates to let everyone leave - chaos could have ensued as 100s went back to their cars to leave at the same time. Very poor! Never seen anything like it! New system this year? No good with numbers of people coming through especially at peak time to leave. Sorry Vedettes- I did call you - you need to speak to Mairie to sort this or you will lose business!
