We booked this tour through our hotel. I knew we should have found our own private company because I read some of the reviews. I should have heeded their advice. I entered the bus with my husband and we couldn’t sit together because the bus was already full. They wasted time by stopping in Higüey for everyone to buy high priced souvenirs. Then we went to Bayahibe and waited to be close armed into a boat that took us to the catamaran. We had to move from one boat to the other without shoes. They have photographers that take your pictures and try to get you to buy them for 60 we paid 25 but should have paid less. Only a few we any good. When we arrived at the beach we had to get into another boat to get to the beach. The photographer grabbed us immediately so he could take our pictures and be done. We were the last to get food. It was gone as soon as we got a plate. I had spaghetti and rice and it all tasted like fish. No good vegetarian options. My husband had the meat which he said was tough and dry. We were told we had unlimited drinks of rum and coke or sprite. They were served in six ounce plastic cups. We were allowed one beer of the same size on the beach. We were able to stay for two hours. We then loaded a speed boat to take us to see the star fish in the natural pool in the middle of the ocean. Hahahha. We flew past an area where there were starfish and told look so you see them. We went and parked the boat far from the starfish and off the coast. This natural pool wasn’t in the middle of the ocean. It was right off the coast. I know you can’t touch or disturb the starfish but it would have been nice to be able to troll in the area to see the starfish a little better even if we couldn’t go out in the ocean there. While we were at the natural pool two really drunk guys decided to grab the bottle of rum that was set on the back of the boat and take some swigs from it. A crew member caught them and got the bottle back and then poured it into a bottle of coke after these two morons drank out of it. They served it to people. When we got back to the Bayahibe area we loaded the bus and had to wait for at least a half hour until the other group that was with us got back. Then we took the bus back to Punta Cana and we were the last stop to be dropped off. We didn’t get in until 8 pm and we had no dinner. Just the crappy lunch. This trip for me was not worth the money or the time wasted. The island is beautiful but there were too many people there.

The Saona Catamaran tour by Saona Dreams is the worst excursion ever! Complete waste of money! I have been on 75+ excursions/day tours around the world and this is easily the worst I have ever been on. The high (low?) points: -The catamaran – Dirty boat with tons of people crammed on it. Very loud music, people were rude and rowdy. Crew members were drinking alcohol with the guests. The best way to describe the scene on the catamaran is utter chaos. Getting onto it was very unsafe as we were jumping from a smaller boat to the catamaran in rough water. - The trip – It was a 2 hour ride on the catamaran (which was after at least 30 minutes spent getting onto a small boat that took us out to the catamaran). It’s terrible and a complete waste of your day. The seats are uncomfortable and there are not enough of them. As unruly passengers spilled drinks while dancing and jumping (crewed joined in too!), the deck was wet, and of course we were all required to be in bare feet. Gross! - Saona island – It’s an okay beach with a ton of people on it and not enough lounge chairs. All of the chairs are moldy. The bathrooms are questionable. The food is okay, but they ran out so we did not get a full meal. There is not much to do on the island. (Maybe that’s good? Our “whole day” tour amounted to 2 hours on the island.) Don’t plan on snorkeling or any tropical fish anywhere on this excursion. You have to bring your own gear, but it’s useless because there is almost nothing to see under the water. - Speed boat – We were supposed to be returned to where we started this day from hell via what they called a “speed boat.” Ours broke down 4 times. The case of the engine was being held together with bungee cords. Very sketchy. The driver was purposely going through the wake of other boats so that our boat would bounce around and hit the water roughly. It felt unsafe. This tour was disorganized, dirty, and unsafe at various times. It was a complete waste of a day. This is easily the most disappointing and disgusting tour I’ve ever been on, and it’s horrible that the hotels are recommending it. We would have been much better staying at our resort and sitting at the pool. Please do not give these people your money. You will regret it.

To break up our Resort Stay, we booked a day trip to Saona Island by Catamaran and stayed for private lunch on the beach. It's fair to say that it was very touristy BUT our guide was good enough to find the locations where we had really few around us. The biggest take away which we didn't have was that the beach has lots of reef, so be careful and take water sandals (or other appropriate footwear) with you.

Our vacation tour guide sold us this excursion as a VIP express trip. We thought it was the Catalina island and Altos de Chavon trip but got this instead. We are dealing with the tour guide scam separately and will focus this review on Saona Dreams as a company. Saona Dreams was a dangerous mess. We were picked up late at our hotel and brought to a gas station to wait for more people. After several stops and more people picked up we made our way down the highway and the hour and a half trip to Bayahibe was a surprise as we were not told that the excursion was so far away from Punta Cana. The guide Ramon, brought his son because it was a Saturday. He was fine, and the son cute. Once we got to Bayahibe and told to disembark. There was a photographer ready to take our pictures for "boat control" to be sure that everyone made it back. We waited in the hot sun for over 45 minutes while Ramon went and got us wrist bands for the national park (Catalina island). Throughout this time we were accosted by aggressive vendors who would not take no for an answer. We were finally loaded onto speed boats but were not offered life jackets (adults and children alike). The transfer to the catamaran was very rough and frankly dangerous as the speedboat bumped up against the catamaran in very rough seas. We got underway with NO safety talk or life jackets in 6/7 foot swells. The Saona Dreams staff walked around with Coke and Sprite bottles and cheap rum. There was a large cooler of water at the bar but were not told if it was purified or not. The only bathrooms on the catamaran had no water and after two hours of rough seas were filthy with vomit and feces spread everywhere. Once we arrived at Catalina Island we were invited to snorkel but were told that we wouldn't see much because of the rough seas. After 15 minutes we were told to come back to the boat so that we could go to the island for lunch. Once we were hoisted back onto the speedboats for the trip to the beach, we were shocked to see that the pristine, uninhabited island that was promised was a small beach with about 200 people on it..with the requisite aggressive vendors there as well. Our lunch consisted of very basic fare. There was another tour there that had nice table cloths, centerpieces and lobster. Clearly this was the tour we thought we bought. The only bathroom facility on the island required a bucket to flush the toilet. Sure there was beer at the bar along with the Sprite and Coke and cheap rum. Ramon later got into a verbal spat with the tour guide of the higher quality tour as they fought over the speed boats to get us back to the catamaran. After another hour and 40 minutes or so (faster this time as they actually started the motors rather than only use the sails) we were transferred back to the speed boats to take us to Bayahibe. I can't stress enough the danger of the transfers. The speedboats bobbed and heaved in the rough seas. Many people slipped and were almost crushed between the boats and the catamarans! The Saona Dreams staff do take you by the arms to help and do the best they can but they are in desperate need of more safety training. To add insult to injury once we finally got back onto our bus. Ramon passed around cheap bottles of homemade rum with...you guessed it...photos of the guests that were taken at the beginning of the trip (boat control) for $15.00US. Ramon the tour guide and his son (who played bartender for the rum for the whole trip...sad seeing a child pour generous pours of liquor) got off the bus and wished us well. We did not get back to our resort in Punta Cana until 8:15pm, 12 hours after we were picked up. Honestly we were left so traumatized by this excursion. We are more mad at the tour guide who sold us this disaster than the company who I'm sure does the best it can. My advice...stay away from this hot mess and stay on your resort in Punta Cana. The beach at Catalina island was definitely not worth it! To Saona Dreams....reflect on your business model and look for efficiencies and improvements. Everyone on the trip with us told us that they would complain to their tour guides. Use your tourist dollars wisely and ask questions before you buy!! I wish I would have taken time to check Trip Advisor before we bought. We were not told who the provider was until after we bought... Cheers and enjoy your Punta Cana vacation!

hola i remember you i was at the beach in the morning when you arrived and you were telling me that you taught that the excursion was catalina chavon vip with altos the chavon and chavon river. unfortunately at the moment of you bought your excursion happened confusion or mistake and after that for you everything in this excursion was no good. We are sorry for that even if in reality the the problem is what your tour operador sold you is not the excursion that they reserved us. Regards
