We have done this trail today for the fourth time. I remain in awe of God’s beautiful nature! Even the most inexperienced and unfit person can complete the walk up to the Brandwag Buttress. With the recent rains the park did some much needed maintenance on the trail installing some
concrete stepping stone. The view at the topic is breathtaking.

I drove through the park on my way to Clarens. It was a scenic drive. There were a lot of mountains and cliffs. It rained a lot these past few months so the grass was lush with green. The cliffs looked splendid and it was fantastic seeing little waterfalls cascading the cliffs. If you are lucky you'll some of the resident elands that are roaming around.

We went for a drive through the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. We parked at Glen Reenen's Rest Camp where we were assisted by a very helpful ranger who sold us passes and gave us a map and some ideas for our hike. We climbed up the Brandwag Buttress in about an hour and a half with three children. They enjoyed the chain climb right at the end and we felt they were safe on top roaming around a bit. We then came down the stairs and along the road. It's a great walk in the afternoon so you can be at the top as the sun drops low on the horizon. The views were spectacular. I'll definitely go back.

Clarens and Golden Gate National Park

I would like to say something here about a recent visit I made, with my grandson, to Clarens and to the Golden Gate National Park.

A neighbour of mine suggested I contact a friend of hers, Mr Gideon Ellis, who would probably be able to make our trip there both interesting and informative. How right she was!

Once we settled in Clarens, I made contact with Mr Ellis who agreed to walk us around the town of Clarens, as well as escort us to the Golden Gate National Park.

And what a delightful day we had! A charming man, Mr Ellis spoke enthusiastically about Clarens itself, and then told us so much more about the Park. He seemed to know the names of all the mountains, as well as so much about the flora and fauna – and gave us so many interesting details about the special geological features too. He also found time to help me, a somewhat elderly lady, negotiate some of the tricky features of the terrain, and was also able to fascinate my grandson – no mean feat if you think most teenagers – with the extent of his knowledge.

We spent a most enjoyable day in the company of Mr Ellis. Clarens is fortunate indeed to have someone living there who shows such knowledge, such interest and such charm.

We also had a lovely walk on trails that surrounded Clarens in which Mr Ellis took my Grandson and I on. It was a wonderful walk through the trees and up past the indigenous flowers and learn about them as well as enjoy the majestic views, Mr Ellis even showed us a secret three tier waterfall area which sadly had no water because there had been no recent rainfall.

All together I had a wonderful stay and can’t wait to go back again. I would highly recommend Mr Gideon Ellis if you want to have a great time in Clarens and learn fascinating facts about the area

Magnificent scenery, but we feel we were possibly scammed by so-called park officials. We left the National road (no fee) to drive the Blesbok and Oribi loops, 6km and 4km When all the other cars had left one particular viewing spot we were approached by a man and a woman, in uniform but in an unmarked car. They demanded payment of R250 for a permit for 4 of us. We were not comfortable with this but paid. We left feeling that we’d probably been taken in. If there is a legitimate fee we would happily pay - at a properly signposted site.

Spoilt a beautiful drive.

Although there is a variety of animals, this Park is about the scenery. We have been there a couple of times and still maintain that the best time of the year to visit is from middle Nov to middle Dec. It is so beautiful that you must see it to believe it. Don't ever just drive through it - even if you only spend an hour or so you will never forget it.

Well worth taking the detour, go on all the little side roads (a strong vehicle is required for some places). The views ans scenery is spectacular. At this point there is no fee to pay for self drive

It is every beautiful and wonderful place to be in. I was very impressed with the quality of furniture and their setting style was very welcoming and comfortable. The place has a wide variety of activities to do and their services is exceptional. And not to mention the food was mouth watering and very tasty. It was my first time having to go into a wine gallery and taste different kinds wines and I must say that was fun of my lifetime experience. The gallery has beautiful artworks and different kinds of paintings. If you're a nature lover, this place is for you. It is full of life, has fresh breeze and wildlife places. I would highly recommend one to pay for a visit.

There's a reason it's called the GOLDEN Gate National Park... Driving through the park in October, the rich, warm colours of the landscape are so striking!
And winding your way through the mountains from the Clarens side towards Fouriesburg, the rock formations become ever more epic with each turn!
A stunning drive through amazing scenery!

We stayed at Glen Reenan Rest Camp.
The reserve is lovely, the accommodation reasonably comfortable and clean.
The hiking trails are well maintained and the roads are in good condition.
The shop had the basics and I found the staff throughout the reserve to be friendly and helpful.

My few concerns are:
The playground at Glen Reenan is not in a good state and desperately needs TLC.
Many people stop over at the petrol station during the night and blast their music, this is against the rules posted and the rules should be enforced even on passing traffic.
Finally the challenge of baboon proofing the chalet windows needs to be addressed so that guests don't have to choose between having air in their chalets or keeping baboons out of them.
