A beautiful place

If you are travelling here make sure you take the longer route, trust me the scenery along the way is so worth it! We purposely chose the longer way to drive through the mountains and we were not disappointed. The views were absolutely stunning and the roads were in great condition considering they were mountain roads!!

All the way to the Top of the island and beyond driving from Santa Cruz-up through Agana the rain was falling ,such a diverse climate with the clouds breaking through as they hit the rock face. The twists and turns keep you alert and it all worth while as you twist your way down hill toTaganana We found many cafe restaurants many serving bus trips,we went to small restaurant away from the rush near the rock. Definitely worth the trip

The gem of the island

I found Taganana 10 years ago and I come back almost every year and stay here for weeks. Some great hiking routes start or pass here, there is quiet everyday life and amazing views here. I like information posts at all interesting objects.
You could say there are no tourists - big couches pass Taganana and go directly to the seaside restaurants some 3 kilometers down the road. It takes just 25 minutes by public to get to San Andres and Las Teresitas beach and 15 minutes more to Santa Cruz.

Beautiful Natural Reserve

Taganana is described as a town, but it’s more a small tiny village up in the mountains. Hardly any tourists. You see locals going about their business. At the bottom of the mountains is the ocean and the Reserve De La Biosfera. The most natural, unspoilt sea. It’s a protected area due to the rock formations from the volcano, and an important archeological site. The area is quiet and untouched. Not the part of Tenerife that you normally see in the holiday brochures. But it’s an awesome place and you should try and see it. Those driving here in a rented car should learn proper etiquette of when to give way and how to give way. Or it’s easier to take a guided tour. The drivers here are experienced and safe! Great day out.

Amazing views

Iwent here on a tour it was amazing scenery and so interesting to see the way the local inhabitants lived in thes difficult conditions and indeed the different environments on different sides of the mountain we had a lovely lunch in a little restaurant in Tganana called Casa Africa we also saw the town of La Laguna and Santa Cruz and our guide explained the History of the places we visited and the driver did some brilliant driving.I would advise any tourists going there to use the tours because the roads are very difficult the prossionals and locals can manage well but tourists in hire cars have difficulty.

Quiet village with stunning views

Gorgeous location reached by the most scenic drive of our trip, crowned by the Lion's Head rock formation just before you descend into the village. Taganana is very hilly, so not for everyone, but we were glad we were based here.

We had wonderful walks up into the mountain and also along the coast. There was substantial scrambling over granite boulders for the latter. We were lucky it was low tide, but we still got drenched watching the rainbows in the sea spray. It took about 3 hours to reach Punta del Draguillo. Walk the coast road up to Almaciga as an easier alternative, which takes about 40 minutes.

Taganana is known for its wine and its lack of availability, but we found it in the village shop. We had the rose, for just €4. It was different to anything else we've tasted. A bit minerally, but it also tasted like strawberries. They also had white (same price) and Malvasia (another white) for €7. We read afterwards that it used to be reserved for royalty.

The shop doesn't have prices marked on everything, but what we were charged was always fair. Do ask for the fresh bread, as they keep it behind the counter. The long one was savoury and delicious. The round crowned one was also good, but sweet, so better for dunking in coffee than for making sandwiches. By the way, we liked their coffee so much, we brought it home with us. There were fresh cheeses and eggs- all different sizes and colours. Just ask for the quantity you want and you'll be given the next ones from the tray. There was abundant fresh fruit and veg given the size of the shop- try the bananas. They were the most banana-y bananas we've ever had.

If you don't feel like cooking, try Bar Las Nieves. I've already written a full review, so won't repeat it here, but it's the perfect place for good honest food that the locals eat, and it's great value.

The airport took an hour and a half to get back to, first thing in the morning. Santa Cruz took an hour. Be aware in your planning that pretty much the only negative about Taganana is its amazing scenic route. The dotted line road markings are an indication of where the centre of the road is. They don't mean that the road is wide enough for two vehicles. There are road signs explaining this. We were behind a crash near the Lion's Head by a few minutes. Everyone was ok and managing the situation, so we were able to get around them (sounds selfish but I promise it was ok) as a bus arrived from the other direction. We were only just able to get around the bus. Indeed, the driver was waving at us to go via a ditch. The car behind us couldn't get around the bus and the bus couldn't get around the accident. It was some time before any traffic came through the village. Please don't let that influence whether or not you would go or stay there. Just allow plenty of time. I'd go back to Taganana in a heartbeat.
