Among the alleys of the wonderful historic center of Grottammare, stands the majestic and magnificent sixteenth-century church of Santa Lucia in the northern peripheral area. Built at the behest of Pope Sixtus V on the site of his birthplace, it has a majestic exposed brick façade enriched with travertine elements and marked by four travertine pilasters, surmounted by a curved bell tower with three superimposed arches; in the center is the travertine entrance portal, surmounted by a broken curved tympanum, with the papal coat of arms of Sixtus V. It rests on three support arches on a splendid small square with a magnificent view of the beautiful Riviera delle Palme. The interior, reopened during the FAI spring days after years of closure due to the damage of the 2016 earthquake, has a square plan with an inscribed Greek cross and a central dome. There are four splendid and rich late Baroque altars, magnificent pictorial works and a precious eighteenth-century organ above the wooden choir loft. The main altar is particular, consisting of a wooden panel painted with illusionistic architectural motifs with a perspective effect, in which the altarpiece depicting the Martyrdom of Saint Lucia, of seventeenth-century origin, is inserted: a precious and stupendous work of art! !! Another extraordinary and evocative treasure chest, full of truly magnificent sacred art!!! Absolutely worth visiting, not to be missed!!!
