We stop at Skun market, a world famous tourist attraction for its fried spider snacks. A number of stalls have been set up around a large square offering fried insects and many types of dried fruit. Nothing special for the locals, but for the Western tourist it is of course a moment to have a wonderful horror experience. Photos are taken and our guide has ensured that we can also play with a live specimen of tarantula. The animal is extremely tame. Probably knows it will be among the fried ones tomorrow. Some prepared insects are purchased and the guide will eat them in front of our eyes on the bus. Anyone who is hungry also gets a snack, much to the amusement of the others. Afterwards our guide explains that insects are enjoyed all over Cambodia.

This busy market town has grown up by the intersection of National Highway 6 and National Highway 7 and is visited daily by tourists travelling between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
We had a coffee-break and visited for about 30 minutes, driving north from Phnom Penh towards Siem Reap.
Skun (or Skuon as it is sometimes called) is also known in the local language as "Spiderville" and visited by international visitors for its fried spiders.
Although fried spider is a regional delicacy in Cambodia, we did not tast them,- only made some shots with our camera.
There were many trays with different types of fried bugs/insects, but the market is best known from the spiders or tarantulas.
We noticed that it is a popular attraction for tourists on buses passing through this town,- but on the road between S.R. and P.P. there is not too much to see anyway, which makes Skun a good place for a coffee/toilet brake.
Several young children chase the tourists with various fruit to sell. We bought some artificially made pineapple and mini-bananas at a resonable price.
North on highway 6 on the road to Kampong Thom there are some impressive temples.
Also near by is the town Phnom Santouk,- home to a temple mountain with small temples and Buddha statues at the top.

First to mention is, that the spider market is NOT at the Skun Market. Why did nobody mention thet before? We found one larger market approx. 4km away from Skun Market in direction to Phnom Penh. There is a restaurant called Restaurant 88 and a lot off insects and spider offerings surrounding it. We rented a scooter to get therefrom Kampong Cham. The street is nice and you can go for 70-80km/h all the way.
We did it and ate a spider. It was rather tasty :D
We really liked the visit. It's funny to see the kids play with living tarantulas as if they were cute hamsters.

I honestly dont know why this is called a Spider Sanactuary- as far as I know it is more popularly know as Spider Market.
The market itself is an odd mix - on the one hand we have spiders, silkworms, caterpillars, grasshoppers, frogs etc, and then there is a whole lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. They also have candied fruits and chips. We bought some jackfruit chips which were very good! The whole point of stopping here is to try the insects; but we did not have the "appetite" to try them- satisfied ourselves with some pictures instead!
It is located on the highway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap and makes for a good stop for bathroom breaks etc. So, probably worth checking out

It's basically a market on the way to Siem Reap. It's a great place to have a pit stop and try some foods that Westerners don't normally eat. They also sell really good fruit and other more mundane dishes, but the point of stopping there is to try the insects and the tarantulas.
