About
Tucked away in the ancient heart of the Highlands, you’ll find Balblair distillery where we have been crafting our whisky since 1790. At Balblair, we take great pride in what we do. We want to share it with the world, not only through our malts themselves but by letting people see behind the scenes at our distillery. You can explore our buildings, meet the makers, learn how we craft our malts and enjoy a taste or two of our whiskies, from the very place it was born. We offer two levels of distillery tour, and you can book online via our website. VISITOR CENTRE OPENING HOURS APRIL - SEPTEMBER Monday - Friday: 10am - 5pm Saturday: 10am - 5pm OCTOBER - MARCH Monday - Friday: 10am - 4pm

- Eve HUnited Kingdom27 contributionsBalblair the hidden gemWhat a great tour, Nigel was knowledgeable and great fun. We were extremely well looked after and recommend this hidden gem. The drams were great and the hand pump (bottle your own) extremely drinkable. Thank youVisited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 28, 2023
- Barry W1 contributionExcellent DistilleryMyself and my wife visited the Distillery without previously booking but were still able to do the tour. The tour was relaxed, with a very good guide and was very informative. This was not the first Distillery that we have visited but was definitely the best so far. The tasting at the end was also very informative and the free gift was a lovely surprise.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 28, 2023
- zathura2016Leicester, United Kingdom31 contributionsTop TourImmy and I were the only ones on the tour and Donna did a great job for us. The tour was packed with detail and information about the special things that Balblair do to make their whisky different to everyone else. And it is - the tasting was informal and provided further insights into how to appreciate the whisky. Great tour - great distillery - probably the best in the area.Visited February 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 28, 2024
- TravelhoundPortlandPortland, Oregon58 contributionsBest people ever! These folks could not be more kind. We had an excellent tour with lovely tastings capped off by filling and labelling our own labels. Among other things, we bought two lovely engraved tasting glasses to bring home with us to the U.S. They were my favorite keepsake we brought home from our trip. Just today I accidentally broke one of the glasses. My wife emailed to see if we could purchase and have shipped a replacement. They responded almost immediately saying not to worry about it and they would send us a new set for no charge. My wife was so surprised by this special kindness she actually teared up. Thank you Balblair! You are truly wonderful people running a great business. Hope to visit again!Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 4, 2024
- shelaghw2015Herefordshire, United Kingdom19 contributionsGreat tour!Such an engaging and interesting tour at this wonderful working distillery. We loved all the different smells as you passed through the process. All of the staff were very friendly and welcoming too. The young lady who led the tour was excellent - so knowledgeable. The whisky samples were also excellent! Can highly recommend both the tour and the whisky!Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024
- ChgoFoodieChicago, Illinois445 contributionsBest Distillery TourAngus was so knowledgeable about Balblair’s history and the whiskey making process. He captivated our group of 9 and eagerly led us room to room as he described the steps to make the whiskey. The tour ended with a tasting of 4 whiskeys with different ages. They were all so different and delicious. I’d highly recommend this tour.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 26, 2024
- Teresa J1 contributionAMAZING TOURAMAZING TOUR! We had messed up our timing and arrived an hour early, but the fantastic staff gave us an earlier tour. The guide was clearly loving both whisky and his job. Tour was just incredible, and even though we were visiting a working distillery, all staff we met were very friendly and willing to answer questions. We later compared all the distillery tours we'd been on during our holiday in Scotland, and all agreed this was by far the top experience. We will definitely be coming back next time we're in Scotland.Visited June 2024Traveled with friendsWritten June 29, 2024
- Andrew B9 contributionsBrilliant ExperienceJust read a previous review in which the reviewer gave advice re photography. If you read the website on booking you know that (a) photography is not permitted in production areas and (b) there is work being done throughout the distillery. To give a poor review because you don’t read is just plain nasty. To compensate for the work being done we received an extra drink of a very special cask-strength whisky. The young lady who took us round the distillery was very personable and provided us with lots of interesting information. This is an amazing small distillery, the oldest in the Highland area and is well worth a visit. It starred in the movie “The Angels’ Share” and it is easy to see why it was used.Visited July 2024Traveled with friendsWritten July 7, 2024
- MorolTromso, Norway139 contributionsGreat tour of venerable old distilleryWe arrived before opening time, but they started with a separate tour with just the two of us. Got a good insight into the production process and got to ask all the questions we had. The tour then went into the warehouses. It was very special to see the warehouse of barrels and the conditions in the warehouse. Tasting as usual, and we each got our own whiskey glass with logo. Can really be recommended.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 23, 2024
- Rickey T17 contributionsWorth a Stop, Even for the Weary! My wife and I came to Scotland this past Spring to take our own Scotch tour and had the pleasure of tasting scotch at 12 distilleries all throughout the Highlands and Speyside. Fiona led us on this tour and we enjoyed that the operation was smaller and more intimate than others. To be honest, my wife and I were exhausted from so many tours at this point but the energy and humor of the staff helped us to get a second wind and the whiskey was just right for my palette (smooth, light, flavorful). It was a bit far from other distilleries but we were comfortable with the driving situation by then. We still need to watch the movie Angel’s Share, portions of which were filmed at Balblair! Very cool.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 30, 2024

Dear fellow whisky friends: You need to understand what you can get for a hefty GBP 50 per person when you buy a Balblair Essence Experience Tour.
First of all expect not to be allowed to take pictures inside anywhere, as this is said to be the company policy. The guide tried to explain that another guide lost his job for non compliance. Well, for us visitors it matters what WE can see. An out of date policy should be clearly understood before one pays such a fine charge.
On the outside the facility looks good and represents what you expect of an old, typical distillery. And the surrounding area is remote and very nice.
When we came the facility was not producing but under maintenance, with lots of noise from earthworks in addtion.
We got a three standard drams and a cask strength as compensation for the noise.
If the company policy does not change my credo is; Do not go there.

I live close to Balblair and for many years it has been my go-to distillery to take visiting friends and family to. The old stone buildings & warehouses are wonderful with beautiful surrounding countryside. Our guide on my recent visit was excellent. You got the feeling that he wasn't just parroting the same old spiel, and he added humour into his commentary.
The downside of my visit this time was that they no longer permit their paying customers to take any photos. I did ask a member of staff why, and they shrugged and said "instructions from head office."
At a time when so many people enjoy taking photos and selfies on their phones and digital cameras. It seems odd that they no longer allow their visitors that pleasure. Especially when you consider that in their email to me requesting that I write a review of my visit, they wrote:-
"at Balblair we take great pride in what we do. We want to share it with the World."
So if you want to take photos of a fine old whisky distillery. I would suggest that you consider going to Glenfarclas. They let you take photos and selfies everywhere and their whisky, if like me, you enjoy sherried malts, is to die for!

We had booked a distillery tour and tasting, and were pleasently surprised by both whisky and the staff's friendliness. The tour, it was just the two of us joining, was fun and informative. We were shown around all parts of the distillery, and learnt a lot although this was not our first distillery visit.
During the tasting we tried the core range, but also a distillery exclusive hand bottling fresh from the cask (18 year old) - rich, fruity, intense...
The on-site bistro offered excellent, freshly made food (we had the sandwich-soup combo).

I have visited many distilleries over the years, this was by far the best tour I have had.
This is not one of the large commercial distillery tours but a glimpse in to the working of a more traditional distillery.
Very friendly very knowledgeable tour conducted by Simon, always taking time to make sure every question was answered.
Totally recommend a visit even if you are a distillery veteran.

Had a fabulous tour of the Balblair distillery on our recent visit to Inverness. Our tour guide Julie made understanding the process so easy and other tour members interacted which made the visit very interesting. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are interested in seeing a distillery that has changed very little through time. The whiskey tasting at end finished a great afternoon off just nicely.

Booked this as a surprise for our neighbours who work all hours and don't get much time off, we all did the £10. Tasting tour, it was limited due to work being done on site however the tour was 1hr long but as there was only 4 of us the & it was quiet the tour girl was excellent and spent lots of time explaining and giving all her knowledge of the distillery so our tour ended up being was 1.5hrs This is a lovely little distillery and a original one too not commercialised like some. It is definitely worth a visit if your in the area.

Loved it! Our tour was with Angus, who was superb - full of knowledge, funny and with a wonderful, soft brogue.
Balblair is an amazing distillery, small enough to maintain its history and culture, but producing an impressive volume of bloody incredible whiskey. 🥃
On top of the tour which, for whiskey lovers especially, is worth the £22.50 entry fee, you get to taste (or take home if, like me and my son, one was driving and the other is underage) four drams of their superb whiskeys: on our visit this was the 12, 15 and 18 year olds, and a dram from a 2009 (I think) straight from the cask - on top of this we each got one of their glasses, which sell in the shop or £15… an absolute bargain! Thank you Angus, and all at Balblair, for a fabulous couple of hours.

We had a great time visiting the distillery.
Nigel was extremely knowledgeable and personable. The customer service was, as always, exemplary ( live locally so have been before to buy whisky but not done the tour).
Oh, and the whisky is superb!
I shall be recommending the tour to all the guests at our holiday let.

Lovely private tour by Simon in which he took us through (almost) the entire distillery, from barley to barrels. Maaaaybe a bit on the pricey side (£20 p/p) but it was just our party, we could ask a load of questions, no rushing, et cetera and two drams per person were waiting us at the end (the driver of the party got them to go).
A first for me on a whisky distillery tour was to actively see the fermenting yeast in the huge barrels (God help them when they have to be removed for cleaning/maintenance) and get a good whiff.

We stopped in for a quick tasting as an impromptu decision while on tour. The staff member was very friendly, offering a brief overview and introduction to Balblair. We then tasted 3 of their standards and 2 single casks - one was a fill your own bottle cask which was a distillery exclusive and the other was a special bottling that had been done for a whisky festival that had been cancelled due to Covid. Our favorite was the fill your own bottle single cask. Unfortunately for us, we did not have time to drink a bottle and had already maxed out how many bottles we were shipping home. Fortunately for you, that leaves one more bottle of this fantastic whisky to be purchased!!! Cheers!!!

We are visiting the area next week and would like to visit the distillery and hopefully do the tour. Are children welcome? I have done some tours in the past with them, but have come across some distilleries that don't allow child on tours.
Written August 19, 2015
Hi Claire, thank you for your question. I am afraid that the distillery does not allow for children under 12 on tour. I hope this is of help.
Kind regards
Julie
