On our way back from Agios Nikoloas Foundoukli and heading for the seven Springs we passed by this Ghost Town.
Campochiaro (now Eleousa) was built by the Italians during World War II (1935).
They eyed on timber trade and hoped to exploit the forest area for tourism but during WWII it became an important military base.
In September 1943 the Italians surrendered to the Germans and the Greeks had to help the Italian woodworkers by hiding them from them (the Germans).
After the War, Campochiaro was named after Aghia Eleousa (Our Lady of Tendernes).
The church was converted to Greek Orthodox and dedicated to St. Charalambos and the School was turned into a Sanatorium.
One of the eye-catchers is the old abandoned Market place (quite "picturesque").
A must see when in Rhodes !

What a strange and unusual place. Really interesting to explore an abandoned village centre. There is a good amount of information to access through a QR code and the ability to walk into and explore most of the buildings made it a really interactive experience. When we arrived we were the only people there and it was really eerie. A film set in the making!

We stumbled across this amazing place quite by accident and were blown away. The majesty and the impressive design is still there in the tiles and architecture and it has been untouched since the Nazi party left as it is considered locally that nobody wants anything to do with its past. There's the Nazi hq and the TB sanatorium, both safe and free to walk around and explore. Both are incredible buildings to photograph and soak up the atmosphere from. An interesting break away from the the bustle and hustle of the tourist traps. Also nearby is Villa Veche...

Unexpected find when visiting Eleousa. It's easy to imagine the beauty of the market building and the bustle of the community when you visit, even though it was abandoned after WW2. It's charm is being able to wonder round but be careful if you have young children as the buildings are dilapidated. The sanitarium opposite the church was used to treat Tuberculosis until 1970, is eerie and sad. A fascinating place to visit, slightly off track and if you like this then perhaps visit Mussolini's villa nearby at Profitis Ilias.

What a find very interesting and you can look all around got some great pics, read the back story the Italian building is amazing and the sanitarium is very spooky

If you are into visiting abandoned buildings and ghost towns, you will love visiting this eery and creepy place. You can scan a QR code at the entrance to discover its fascinating history.

Car needed to get there, derelict settlement, two old buildings where you can explore, not for kids, spent a few hours here, cafes in villages 100 yds down the road, food is great, take a camera.

This Italian settelment (from WW2) is diversity to discover. One one side abandoned buildings acting as ghost town that surround the pleasant park in the middle and pleasant church (that is in use) on other side. It is interesting, since this place is totaly abandoned, that the buildings were not etiher removed or renovated to serve in new function. Nevertheless, you can use the time spend in this place as reflection and reminder about all horros of WW2.

we stumbled across this deserted Italian Village that was used by the Germans in WW2 by accident and once we had read the guide book's description of what it was we investigated the deserted derilict sanitorium and the market place with wallpaper still on the walls. I got spooked, it really did scare me - maybe too many movies on haunted hospitals etc got to me but after walking through for 20 minutes I really did have to leave!! The church is beautiful and if you are in the mountains stop 20 minutes and have a look - don't let the creaks and groans of an old building scare you like they did me though!!!

It is by leaving these as abandoned buildings that Greece remembers the fascist occupation. Originally a 'seed' settlement in the 1930s to attract Italian tree loggers; this failed and it became a sanatorium for tubercular children until the war. The church was taken over as Orthodox and on a happier note we were privileged to see a wedding the day we visited.
