Red Line Boats / ABC Boat Hire / Goytre Wharf
Sep 2021
Although having a great deal of narrow-boating experience, on arrival at ABC / Red Line Boats we were required to watch two videos and a model mock-up demonstration of how to operate a lock. This was a novel experience, presumably designed to cover the operator in case something goes wrong. There were four of us and we had hired an 8-birth boat. We assumed this would provide plenty of room for sleeping, eating and storage.
Staff at Red Line Boats were polite but not particularly friendly. They also appeared disorganised. Storage space was by far the worst of any narrowboat we had ever been on. After three days of normal use, one of the toilet waste tanks needed emptying. The second tank filled after four days. We pumped out both tanks (at our expense) at Castle Narrowboats, a family-run business, where the attitude and friendliness of the staff was in complete contrast to that of Red Line Boats.
We complained about several things on the feedback form, including items missing from the inventory and the Wifi did not work. I was told to raise the pump out problem with ABC’s customer services.
We will not be using either Red Line Boats or ABC again, no matter how much of their advertising literature falls on our doormat or arrives in our inbox.
Moral of the story. Book in plenty of time. Use a small, independent operator, not a large company. And book direct with the operator.

Nice place for a walk
Aug 2021 • Couples
Pretty little marina. Good place to stop to have a walk along the canal with your dog. We walked a few miles then came for ice cream in the cafe. Ice cream was £2.80 for one scoop which I though was very expensive for the amount you got.
There is a canal boat trip which you can do for £3 for half an hour or so which looked good for kids.

Disappointing
Jul 2021
Finally found the Cafe open after two previous attempts when it was closed. On both of those occasions we were amongst quite a few other people who left disappointed...
Unfortunately, our experience was spoilt by the young woman behind the counter who was rude and ill-humoured. She ignored us twice, then served us without any pleasantries and was very short with us, almost telling us off at one point. Thank goodness for the owner/manager who was lovely, welcoming and very helpful. The food we ordered was ok, but the bread was dry, the 'butter' wasn't good and the quality and quantity of our fillings didn't make up for the other faults... We won't be rushing back.

Looks lovely. Some history too.

Didn't use the cafe hence only 4 stars but it looked really nice and parking - a total of £1.00 for the whole day.
Can't be bad! Great cycling and walking along the tow path - polite cyclists as well slowing down under bridges. There is quite a bit of history to the area which is very interesting. Would recommend.

Very pleasant spot by the canal, nice walks, friendly and helpful cafe (in spite of the rain). Will return when weather improves and take a boat trip.

A real treat of a walk, all on the level other than the steps at the end. Very peaceful. Thoroughly recommend.

Day out on the canal
Sep 2020 • Friends
Pitched up here and got a very helpful friendly welcome. Lots of advice about launching my own canoe, maps and directions handed out freely and advice on local nearby shop to purchase lunch supplies as the cafe was not open. Lots of parking available and easy launch point.

Day Boat Hire - ABCDAYBOATHIRE.COM
Sep 2020
Hired a day boat - Rooster, for my mum's 85th.Did the 3 hour each way trip to Llanfoist. Now the one thing that can't be controlled is the Great British weather - we had half the day dry and half the day raining. Great experience despite the weather and can thoroughly recommend. Some lovely views along the way and we were able to park up for a buffet lunch and some birthday cake.
We booked well in advance to avoid disappointment.

A charming little spot
Oct 2019
The sort of place for gentle strolling. There is a convenient tea rooms and plenty of parking. There is a steep pathway up to the canal but disabled parking at canal level. If you like boats and water it is well worth the short turn off the main road. There is also a little shop selling boating paraphernalia.
