Traveled as a coupleWritten August 15, 2022

This was about a 30 minute drive off the main freeway between Lugo and Leon, and worth every minute. The main exhibition centre at Las Medulas was interesting but quite small; it is a good introduction to the Las Medulas area. It was the mirador de Orellan, however, that was the highlight of the visit.
The road up to the overview is quite narrow and winding, but it is well-paved. From the parking it is about a 700 m walk up a wide pathway/road to the lookout.
Unfortunately we were there on a Tuesday, when the galleries were closed, but even without visiting them this was a very worthwhile stop. The galleries also close between noon and 2 PM on other days.

The viewing platform is a good way to see the area, the aftermath of the roman method of mining which was to use water to undermine the structure to cause it to collapse.
The car park is a short walk from the viewing platform.
Note that you can enter some tunnels to get inside the mountain from here too (called the galerias and a separate entry on TA).
There are no toilets. It is quite hot and sunny. The entrance to the galerias was selling cold drinks when we were there.
There is a network of walking trails in the area that can be explored.
We spent about 45 minutes here in total including the walk to / from car park and visiting the tunnels in the galerias (a short stop on our drive to Ponferrada).

We have decided to make an unplanned deviation in our tour from Santiago de Compostela to Leon in order to visit this very interesting site. All the surrounding landscape is really nice, but the view you can have from Mirador de Orellan is really breathtaking! This mountain was digged by the Romans to extract gold with a very innovative process. What remain are tunnels and peaks of red rock. If you will go to Castilla e Leon don't miss this incredible place!

Hello, everyone talks of a slope to access the Mirador. Please does anyone have a gradient for this slope or pictures to scale? Worried I won't make it!!!
Hola.
