Hansen Bay Beach, we’ll- worth the trip to the East End.
We discovered this little diamond of a beach while exploring the East End of St. John. It was the best find of the trip. It’s private property, but Thalia, owner, let’s you park and use the beach. All she asks is for a donation to help equip and maintain the sandy white beach. A large tree offers shade where you will find a some comfy chairs to escape the sun for a bit. The beach is lined with young palms. There are plenty of beach chairs to use, and a variety of paddle boards, kayaks and floats to use as well. Tucked away in Hansen Bay the water laps lightly against the beach. No waves, so paddle boarding is easy. Although we did not snorkel, there were looked to be a fair number of them exploring rocky outcroppings along the north end. If we’d discovered this quiet beach earlier in the week, we’d have returned. No food available at the beach, so bring along a cooler with water, drinks, snacks, lunch.

    Great Find
We loved Hansen beach. Thalia is extremely welcoming and helpful. She takes donations for your parking and use of lounge chairs (first come first serve) You can rent a pop up shade tent and chairs for $20. One of our favorite days

Always a relaxing time at Hansen Bay Beach
My wife and I have been vacationing on island over 2 weeks, and we have been to Hansen Bay Beach twice so far. It is a beautiful place to visit, and the owners are very friendly and humble about their beach. We had a nice chat with Thalia the other day, and she is such a caring and genuine person. The water is so calm, and the beach is well kept. The palm trees that were planted are coming along nicely. It’s refreshing to see a beach that is not commercialized like others have on island. I had a relaxing snorkel out to Pelican Rock and back. Such a beautiful place and I look forward to our next visit.

Slice of Heaven on the east end!
We could not have been happier with the days we spent at Hansen Bay. Caleb and Thalia were phenomenal hosts...always eager to accommodate! Just coming off her knee surgery, my wife finally found a beach where she could be active. My daughter's mind was blown as well with everything she was able to encounter! Snorkeling was incredible with easy entry into calm water. The massive sea turtle that dwells close by was something to behold! With Hansen Bay being located on the east side of the island, it's more protected from the choppy waters you may find on the beaches of the north shore...allowing for amazing visibility. The large reef off in the distance had gorgeous coral and aquatic life as well! Floating rafts, kayaks, tents, chairs, etc. are all available at very reasonable rates. Just bring food and beverages...Caleb and Thalia will take care of the rest. They will truly bless your day! We're grateful to have found them and are already looking forward to seeing them next time we come to St. John!

    Spectacular!
Hansen Bay Beach on St. John's quieter east side is a gem. It may take a little longer to get to than the north shore beaches however it's well worth the extra effort. The snorkeling is spectacular (my family and I saw thousands of tropical fish, brilliant reef squid, a massive green sea turtle with attached remoras, rays, etc...) and the beach is quiet and secluded. Thalia, the woman who runs the show there, is a delight and will help with parking as well as canopy, kayak or stand-paddle board rentals should you desire one. Bring a cooler with food and beverages as the closest store is back in Coral Bay (a fifteen minute drive) and then you'll have all day to relax at one of St. John's finest beaches.

    Relaxing East End Beach
Thalia greeted us with a smile and a warm welcome to her lovely private beach that she generously shares with the public. For a donation of your choosing to help support the amenities and pay the taxes you are able to enjoy this beautiful stretch of St. John. Our group was battling a little sunburn so we loved being able to pay to use a tent with a table, lounge chairs and floats. We snorkeled in the calm waters to the right and left (Pelican Rock) and saw turtles, an Eagle Ray, and lots of fish along the reef at Pelican Rock. Take your own food and beverage, as there are no other options close by. Definitely glad we stopped at Hansen Bay this trip!

    Twice Is Nice!
We drove all the way across the island twice to enjoy this amazing beach. Our 13-year-old girls played for hours on the floating water mattresses for rent, and the submerged rocks along the sides of the cove make for great snorkeling. We saw our only barracuda of the trip here. All of St. John’s beaches are gorgeous, but Hansens has a special, laid-back, uncrowded vibe. The owners are so friendly. Leave a donation in the tip box to support their visitor amenities at this lovely spot.

Best snorkeling beach on St. John
What a great place to spend a relaxing and fun day. In addition to the gorgeous view from the beach, we experienced the best snorkeling available from shore on St. John. Lots of beautiful live coral and fish, turtles, rays. They also have extremely reasonable rates for renting stand up paddle boards, kayaks, chairs, and canopies. We didn't need a canopy since we found plenty of shade under one of the large number of palm trees. There are porta-potties available, in case you need them. You'll need to bring your own food and drink. This beach has something for everyone.

    The Best Little Secret
My husband and I visited this beach two days in a row. The first day was right before they closed for an hour and my husband did a little snorkeling. It was so good we decided to go back the next day and also rented paddle boats. We paddled out to pelican rock to snorkel around the large life coral reef. We saw an spotted eagle ray, sharks, and all kinds of fish. As others have said its by donation but the quiet beach is totally worth the money and isn't much at all. There's shade and seating already there even though we still brought our chairs. Must visit!

Off the beaten path corner of paradise
If you’re looking for the authentic classic St. John non commercialized experience pair a day on a spiritual oasis of a beach with magical ancient trees and byo lunch and cooler of beverages, paddle board and snorkel all afternoon and swing by skinny legs for dinner on the way back. I mostly swam and read books on my perfect day today. Plus it’s affordable but give all you can to keep this amazing place going

Salt well use to be our go to place. Not anymore. Greed has taken over once again at Hansen. We moved to the smaller beach after the Lime out crowd moved into Hansen and prices there became ridiculous. Well looks like saltwell has done the same. It is no longer a donation even tho the box says so. They will make sure you pay $10 per chair $10 per umbrella. There is not an ounce of donation to anything. They just say it because they are not a legit business with the government. I don’t mind paying and prob would have donated more but don’t ask for a donation then demand the price.

As first time visitors to St. John’s Island my family and I highly recommend spending a few hours at this beach! From the moment you arrive you are greeted by the friendliest women and are offered everything you could ever need for a beach day. $ per hour to use any paddle board, kayak or sailboat and the views are amazing. There are even free lounge chairs for you to use if you don’t want to lay on your towel!!

Worth the visit!

We were staying on the other side of the island and had selected one day to go to the beaches in Coral Bay area. Our friends who have been renting the same house for a week in Coral Bay for 12 years highly recommended Hansen Bay Beach. We arrived and were warmly greeted by a woman who gave us the lay of the land. No parking fee, chairs and awnings free, kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkel gear for a great price (they were slow yet regular prices posted were still reasonable). Port a potties only and no food as the beach food truck moved elsewhere to try and stay afloat. We had the most enjoyable and relaxing day at this beautiful beach. The water is calm and great for families with small children, but we had fun just sitting in our chairs in the water trying to destress from the chaos in the world around us. All of the staff checked on us to make sure we were okay, suggested places to get lunch, and only asked for a donation (whatever we felt). We gave her what we were charged at other beaches just for parking or entrance and then a little something extra. They were all so gracious and my family hopes and prays that they are able to get through these surreal times. If you are on the island stop by and say the family from Connecticut misses them and says hello.

Two women own a piece of property leading to the beach. They provide toilet facilities, tables, chairs, and manage parking. They cannot charge a fee so they ask for a donation. No pressure. Another donation is requested if you use their kayaks or other water equipment. The place is really well kept and organized, and the facilities are appreciated. The snorkeling is excellent – all the way out to Pelican Rock. There is a lot to see – including turtles, rays, and the usual array of fish, corals, and squid. This odd arrangement may sound sketchy, but it is not. Its worth ten bucks to have everything available, orderly, and nice.

Spent a beautiful Xmas morning here recently. It’s a challenging ride to get here, given the hilly and narrow nature of the roads in St. John but it is worth it. Thalia runs a no thrills set up here but it is one of the nicest beaches I have ever been on. We arrived early, gave a donation and had a tent and chairs plus unlimited use of Thalia’s floats, kayaks and noodles for the day. People have complained about the donation policy, but this is someone’s family property that they have opened up to the public. Well worth the donation! Go early as by early afternoon it started to get more crowded.

Great private beach to sit, chill and look at the boats getting out of the December winds. Anywhere on St John you can snorkel, that’s a given, same with this beach. Owner was extremely friendly, informative and gracious. When we were there, they had free to use paddle boards and kayaks, they simply asked you let them know who has what so they can keep tabs on you. They do accept and ask for donations, this is so they can stay open to the public. Don’t take advantage of their hospitality, donate - donate - donate. You are on vacation, be kind to the locals for opening up their homes to you and tip big. ~Cheers.

Went to Hansen for a day at the beach with my family while on vacation for a week in St.John. Hansen was our favorite beach of the entire week and for the second year in a row!! The beach is absolutely breathtaking and the water is crystal clear with nice flat sand. We went snorkeling both days and saw several turtles and other nice fish, super easy to snorkel and see turtles right off the shore!!

The parking is right off the beach and the staff is absolutely amazing and super accommodating. At Hansen the staff can set you up with plenty of shade and awesome water sports and you pay everything by donation, we were very impressed with the level of service from the lovely welcoming and hardworking staff. Overall Hansen is a true oasis in St.John with breathtaking views, water, beach and plenty to do through the day if you want but if not it’s the perfect relaxing beach day in paradise!

You can also find skinny legs just a short drive away!

Absolutely worth the trip to Coral Bay Area, a magical and spectacular day in the sun :)

This lovely piece of paradise is overseen by the warm, friendly Thalia. She’s low-key while ensuring you have everything you need for the day. At her private beach she offers clean portable bathrooms, shade, picnic tables, and kayaks. She asks for
donations; kayaks are $10/hour. Two large turtles hang out on the reefs close by. A dog was loose (Someone else noted multiple dogs.) and chased away the donkey that tried to nab my sandwich. Good dog!

My partner and I spent two weeks on St John and visited nearly every beach and snorkel spot that we could, only to discover that Hansen was our absolute favorite. It’s a really pretty drive to Hansen Bay in itself, and the beach and scenery is certainly enough to satisfy most, but the snorkeling at this bay was the tops of all we experienced. So much Marine life, and great coral (on the far left side of the bay), great water clarity, and just very comfortable and accessible! The host woman was very kind and helpful, and we were very happy to make a donation when we visited for the great value that the bay offered us. It’s more remote than much of St John, and that is a huge perk for us as well. We visited Hansen 4 different times on our trip, including our last day on the island, because we loved it so much. It’s the best and I can’t recommend it enough.

You want an EASY WIN for a lazy beach day?? Just head to Hansen's Bay.

Most VI beaches charge a fee.

Admission here is on a donation basis...give what you feel. And with cool volunteers hanging out under the tree, ample parking, port-a-potties, kayaks, a small sailing 2 person catamaran, coral for snorkeling with fish included and beach (of course) you will want fill the donation box!!!

A special thanks to Thalia, the "ambassador of goodwill" for the day.
