Nice clifftop Burial Chamber with a sea view - shame you can't go inside
Oct 2021
Barclodiad y Gawres Burial Chamber maintained by CADW, is a nice clifftop Burial Chamber with a sea view.
Partially recreated with a concrete dome, lit inside by solar panels outside.
Interesting, especially the view inside through the bars.
Though a shame you can't go inside - as it looked interesting with strange stone carvings.
Free to visit, though you need to pay for car parking in the beach car park a 5 minute walk away.

Fascinating (even looking through the gate)

In normal times a key can be requested from nearby Spar shop (call ahead to arrange with them) - we were visiting during Covid and they told us they are not allowed to let people in at the moment. However it’s still worth a visit and fascinating to look at from the outside - with a torch you can make out some of the art (the big rock front centre right, facing side-on). Maybe not one for you if you are not into history or art... but if you are this is amazing. Short walk to car park and well signposted (it’s in a very prominent position on hill so you can’t miss it really). The car park got really busy during the days so mornings or evenings best time if you want easy parking. There’s a pay and display car park for the beach up the road and a smaller car park nearer to the chamber itself.

Not as good as it looks in pics. You can’t actually go in and look at the marks there was a big iron gate in way. We went on a windy day and it was Baltic. However when you go in it goes calm and warm very odd feeling worth a look in

Disappointing.

I think the beach next to the car park is a better bet than the quarter mile walk to see this burial chamber.

A beautiful journey
Jul 2019
We visited Baclodiad y Gawres Burial Chamber on our self-drive tour of Wales and Anglesey. It is accessible from a parking lot and you can easily see the site from the road. You walk about a mile or less along a beautiful coastal path along the shoreline of the Irish Sea. This walk alone is worth the price of admission (although there is none). The burial chamber sits atop a hill that is a very short climb from the pathway. The chamber is open for viewing, but caged off for its protection. The inside is dimly lit and you can just make out some of the rock motifs carved into the stones there. A denouement to some, the site setting overlooking the sea and the walk along the coastal pathway are more than worth the visit. Take some time and soak in all of the Neolithic awesomeness of this attraction.

Good for the experienced archaeologist, not sure about the general public

Being a 'burial chamber freak' I had to visit this site when in Anglesey, but found it a little disappointing. The signage at the start of the footpath is all about the Anglesey environment and does not mention the burial chamber at all. Once at the chamber it has been comprehensively protected but unless you can pick out the ancient from the modern you might be a bit confused. The lighting is minimal and gives an aura of mystery but I would have preferred the inscribed stones to be lit so that the motifs carved on them could be seen with more clarity. So.....mixed feelings.

Barclodiad y Gawres (= the Giantess's Apronful
Oct 2017 • Family
If you are seriously into prehistoric carvings, this is in the first rank*****
If you are not, then it is not all that exciting***
The story behind the name is that a giantess was carrying a load of stones in her apron and dropped them.
A breezy spot on a windy day, with eye-stinging views of the Irish Sea.

This is an amazing little walk with stunning views and a great little beach
Small car park with charge
Really interesting history and beautiful burial chamber
We were lucky and someone had the key so we could get inside, if you can do this to see the carvings inside
