Great food
Nov 2021
Stopped here for lunch after some walking. Well done to cafe for their covid arrangements. Good to see these being taken seriously. A very small menu but the food we had was very good and we did feel that there was enough choice. We both had the parsnip with chestnut soup accompanied by welsh rarebit. There was too much for me to eat but my partner cleaned his plate. My only critisism was that the welsh rarebit had a bit too much ale in it and was a bit runny but this was a personal taste preference and other may love the ale in the rarebit. Great place to come for lunch after some exercise, and would certainly return

Fab trails in stunning valley
Aug 2021
Great, well marked walking trails. Lots of mountain bikers who seem to be enjoying the plethora of trails for them too. Amazed how quiet it was during August. Good for dogs but would advise putting them on leads in certain places where there are steep drops down to the river….ours are quite capable of chasing a bird flying straight over a cliff!

Fantastic MTB and walking trails
Apr 2021 • Couples
First time visiting Afan Forest park yesterday and it was brilliant. We tried the Rookie Green and Blue mountain bike trails. Both trails were great for beginners (although still tricky), with some good climbs, tight corners, and rocks/gravel to tackle. I loved the skills part to practice some more technical bits. We did three laps of the routes with a break in between. Lovely cafe with good food and coffee. Toilets which were very clean and covid friendly. Car park was only £3.50 for the day. Can’t wait to go back and try out some of the other blue trails.

Good walking and mountain biking
Sep 2020
Reasonable car parking with clean toilets, the mining museum was closed despite that the outside exhibits and information boards were interesting.
The cafe had friendly staff, a good range of food and drink with some outside seating.
We walked the yellow trail, it was a good walk not too challenging but not too easy. The route was well sign posted.
The mountain biking trails were great, plenty for every level including a rookie trail with skills to try they were sign posted but not always clearly, at least for us.

Welsh fresh air.

We stayed at a campsite on the edge of the forest. Great walks and scenery. Quiet and peaceful. Maybe a bit busier on weekends. Take a flask, water and some food and enjoy a picnic. A great place to forget the outside world. Good for biking if that's your thing.

A fun day but the rookie trail wasn’t as easy as we’d hoped
Aug 2020 • Family
We went here one weekday in August when the weather forecast wasn’t that great. There was ample parking when we arrived at about 11am and lots of room to park even with trailer a trailer with bikes on the back. Parking cost £3.50 per day. The machine took contactless cards. You had to know your car registration I think.

There were toilets by the car park - these were fine and there were no queues.

The was Cafe open with indoor and outdoor socially distanced seating and markings on floor. We had lovely coffees and hot dogs for lunch. It seems to be a reasonable price.

We then went cycling with our boys aged 6 and 8. We started off on the rookie trail - it didn’t seem as easy I’d hoped. It was steep and gravelly and a bit scary at first as the bikes could easily skid and we hadn’t had a lot of experience of biking down steep slopes at that stage.

We then ended up on the railway trail thinking it would be easier than the rookie one but it was just one steep climb which seemed endless. Particularly as our 6 year old had a bike without brakes.

Then the signs petered out and we went the wrong way and ended up climbing even higher up the hill which was hard work in the heat. And then we had to go back on ourselves to get back to where we needed to go.

Then it was really steep going downhill - we had to teach the boys how to ride their brakes down the hill and it was a bit too hard for them really. Then we somehow ended up trying to ride The Wall which clearly isn’t aimed at beginners. We walked our bikes up in the end!

We didn’t see too many other bikes or walkers. Although a teenager rider skidded past is on narrow steep section of The rookie trail initially which was a bit scary as it spooked the boys and they almost fell off.

A relief to get back to the car park. I should point out that I’m not really brave when it comes to outdoor activities so I’d always much rather just cycle along the flat on a coastal route.

Went back to cafe and had ice creams. Good selection and they tasted lovely and we managed to get an outdoor table straight away.

I’ve given it 4 stars because the rookie trail seemed a bit harder than I’d hoped and the missing signs led to us getting a bit lost.

Ponty to Cymmer trail

Lovely 2 - 2.5 hour walk. About 14k there and back and all pretty much tarmac. Easier than our usual walks but the environment and scenery are hard to beat. Definitely plotting it more regularly in our schedule. Be a great run route too.

Fantastic place for walks

What a place. Everything was sign posted throughout the park so you know which route to take and stay on. Beautiful surroundings soaking up the tranquility of the river, trees and birds. Good for cycling as there are plenty of bike trails, again all sign posted well.
