About
The castle of Petrela is located on a rocky hill at the height of 400 m above sea level. Since antiquity, this fortress controlled the crossroads with economic and military importance, as Via Egnatia. It is thought that was built in the late antique period (III-IV century AD) and was rebuilt during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (527-565).

Dating from the 56h c, it is one of the country’s oldest structures. The present structure, however, is from the 1400’s. In Roman times its commanding position guarded the Via Egnatia, the road to Constantinople. In more recent times, the castle was under the control of Skanderbeg’s sister when he was fighting the Ottomans. Far off Kruja can be seen on a clear day. You are struck how small the castle is. There are but ruins there today, replaced but a restaurant with a dazzling setting. From downtown Tirana it may take you a good half hour plus to reach it but it represents a core part of the local history.

Was introduced to this amazing venue thanks to a friends wedding. Located about 25 minutes outside of Tirana so very easy to get to and definitely worth the trip. Views were exceptional and even without the formal decor this would still be a lovely place to just relax and get away from the city and have a few drinks. Highly recommended.

The view from the castle was really nice while you drink something to the bar. The castle was with stone and wood and in good conditions. You have to go in some stone roads that brings you to the castle

If you want to get out of Tirana for half a day i can really recommend this place.
The castle remains are situated on top of the little village of Petrela.
From the main square it´s a 5 to 10 minutes walk.
The walkway is marked so you can´t miss it.
The remains of the castle have been transformed into a bar/restaurant.
You´ll have a great panoramic view on top of the castle and I am sure you can just visit it, if you don´t feel like eating or drinking.
Although it´s an awesome place to have something.

To get there by public transport, there is a little bus leaving from a bus station situated in the south east of the city in the student neighbourhood.
It leaves every hour if I remember well and takes about 45 minutes.
Petrela castle is the last stop.

I really like the Petrela Castle in Tirana. I go often there to have a lunch with my family. It's something between old and modern time. The food is delicious and you can see all the Tirana city from there.

The Petrela Castle is small and looks like a chateau balkan style. The Petrela castle is restored on the old one. The castle has a tower and the stone walls around the main building inside the castle perimeter. The restaurant is the very interesting part of the castle and it is a familiar one. The cooking is very Albanian and the products served are based in the peasants products. The service is good and the good period of the year is specially the spring and autumn. The castle has a very spread panoramic view and in the ancient times has been a fortress for the people of Petrela.

This castle is about 8km out of Tirana. The road there is quite good. You can park in the square and hike up, about a 10 minute climb. It could be slippery but we felt it was quite safe. There is a restaurant servicing tasty, great value meals. The views are spectacular and well worth it. we thoroughly enjoyed the 90 minutes or so we spent up there.
