Wonderfully atmospheric

Interesting secluded ruined fortified mansion - great place for a picnic or to think about life. No shop or other services, note.

Castle visit
Sep 2021
As you park up near the church you have to walk through the trees, and suddenly you see the castle ruins through some trees. The castle was built with little defence as King Edward had won against the welsh. The walls are all standing but they are hollowed out.

Beautiful in the sun and no entrance fee
Jul 2021
We were lucky enough to visit when there were no other visitors and the afternoon sun was shining directly on the castle. Although it is small, its very atmospheric and you can take a lovely walk through the surrounding cedar trees.

Peaceful corner of Shropshire
May 2021 • Couples
The castle is set in a very quiet corner made all the more peaceful as we were the only people there. Plenty of information boards.

Beautiful ruin
Apr 2021
We managed to go see this when no one else was there. Perfect photo opportunities.

Car park is small so have to be lucky I guess to get a spot.

There is a nearby public footpath for any walkers that takes you over through the fields. On a beautiful day it’s well worth it. The views are amazing.

Interesting
Oct 2020
We found the castle easy to find off the A49 as it was well sign posted. Interesting castle ruins with some information boards here, on the castles history.

It's okay, nothing particularly special.

This is one of those places that's hard to review. It's a lovely ruin and well looked after, far enough away from civilisation to survive the ravages of the vandals and littering youth. That said, it's basically a shell of a building and there's not that much to see, it really is just four walls.

During my visit, another visitor who I assume is a local, tried to tell me that this was the location where the Magna Carta was signed - Errrr -WRONG! I'm pretty sure that was signed at Runnymede.

Car parking, a few places along the driveway leading to the castle.

Just one note - it can get boggy after wet weather.

Well worth a short visit
Sep 2020
Enjoyed re-visiting after several years. Well set out, reasonable car parking, adequate signs explaining what it is all about. Not really a Castle in the usual meaning of the word, more a very smart residence built with a view to being secure against wandering vagabonds, so not a scene of bloodshed and derring-do.
Un-manned so free entry and no 'facilities', nice for a picnic on a warm day.
Absence of toilets means only four stars!

Charming Manor House Shell
Sep 2020
Charming shell of a semi-fortified manor house. Attractive pink stone. The information board shows an 18th century drawing which demonstrates that a several windows and sections of upper wall have been lost as the house was turned into agricultural buildings for a century or so.
Well signed off village main road, easy parking (but gates locked 'at dusk' which makes early evening visits a little tricky)
When you've seen it the adjacent church is a little gem
