The SS Atlantic Heritage Park is dedicated to the memory of those lost in the SS Atlantic shipwreck of 1873. The SS Atlantic was the second ship of the White Star Line, the same company responsible for the equally ill-fated Titanic. Our site tells the tragic story of this disaster through interpretive panels and recovered artifacts. There is also a memorial for the victims, which is located in our beautiful seaside park. Light snacks and crafts by local artists are available for purchase.

This is an out of the way place but worth the drive. A self guided interpretive center (and cafe) about the largest loss of lives (pre-Titanic) and the heroes that saved many. Considering the year, it is a miracle people survived and were rescued. There was an extensive dive effort to recover the cargo (but not the bodies). Very interesting... More

What a wonderful, out of the way, history experience. A little known but significant disaster of the sea. We were very impressed by the artifacts displayed, the short walking trail, and the knowledge of the centre volunteer. If you go to Peggy's Cove, be sure to visit Terence Bay. It is indeed a hidden gem!

This was a worthwhile stop, after visiting the Titanic grave site. Many died in this much less famous wreck, but didn't receive the notoriety because no rich people were on board.

this is a hidden gem to visit, captures very well the tragic events that took place here. Very nice park to walk around, see the history breathing there with old grave markers (you can see the families living there for 100 years and more). The staff was super friendly and with fresh cookies being available! Best come for the Blessing... More

After finishing in Halifax our next destination was Peggy's Cove via this Park. What a find. We had the place to ourselves and spent ages reading the old grave stones. Lovely boardwalk along the beach area with seats for enjoying the tranquil sea - not like when the disaster happened when 277 people lost their lives in the worst sinking... More

This was one of the informative centre's we stopped at. It told a very poignant story about one of the worst little known marine disasters where every woman and child perished. This resulted in the women & children first rule. Quaint little tea room. Excellent, friendly staff. Nice trail. Well worth the visit.

The SS Atlantic Heritage Park and Interpretation Center were stops on a guided tour of the region. We had not initially planned a visit to the site, but decided to go upon our guide's suggestion. The museum is small but filled with interesting artifacts from the wreck. We were not able to see the Titanic artifacts in Halifax due to... More

We stumbled upon the park while exploring the coast and are very glad that we stopped. We were greeted at the door by a volunteer who explained the the story of the SS Atlantic and the Heritage Park. The museum staff are volunteers and quite enthusiastic about their town and its' history. As other reviewers have explained, the site is... More
