About
Lepenski Vir is a prehistoric archaeological site located in the strict nature’s reserve of Djerdap National Park, which is in the vicinity of Donji Milanovac. The intensive archaeological research of Djerdap Gorge area, carried out between 1965 and 1970, revealed several prehistoric settlements, but only the settlement of Lepenski Vir is characterised with such unique findings and continuous existence through centuries. During the excavations, seven phases of the settlement and 136 buildings were revealed. They were built 8,500 years ago. People lived od this location for olmost 2000 years. The discovered, systematically built settlements – sanctuaries, tools made of bones, horn and stone, jewellery, signs carved into items made of bones and stone, and monumental sculptures made of sandstone – have changed the scientific picture about the Neolithic Period of Europe. The unique urbanism and architecture of the culture of Lepenski Vir are recognised by the characteristic building foundations – of houses or sanctuaries, and by the stone sculptures, the oldest monumental stone plastic in Europe. The sculptures represented gods of the inhabitants of Lepenski Vir, some kind of stone idols, which were shown as the entire human figure or only as the characteristically shaped head.

I feel like I should have liked it more. It is incredibly ancient artifacts and homes, but I found it small, not that impressive, and really difficult to discern. Its not anything I would ever want to do again or would I recommend. We went on a river cruise and it was part of the itinerary, but I would not make any additional effort to go.

Lepenski Vir is one of the largest and most significant prehistoric archeological sites from the Stone Age and was the centre of a complex, prehistoric culture.

It is located on the right bank of the Danube in the Djerdap gorge (The Iron gates of the Danube) near the town of Donji Milanovac.

The discovery of this prehistoric settlement changed what was known about the early Stone Age, expanding our knowledge about how developed human communities that walked the Earth in prehistoric time.

A pleasant walk took us to the site and we later had views of the site from our river boat.

This is an outstanding exhibit of an ancient civilization. It i s housed in an attractive glass building which is not air conditioned except for some rooms. There is a film about the discovery which is fun even though the production is amateurish. The walk to the building is through the forest with many labeled plants.

Although there isn't an enormous amount of things to see here you should remember that the archaeology on display is some of the oldest in the world. Settlements and artifacts dating to 6,300 years BC are not exactly commonplace. The museum itself is well designed and there is plenty of space to move around. There is also a restaurant nearby.

The real Mesolithic and Neolithic site of Lepenski Vir having a huge importance in European Prehistory has actually not been preserved during the construction of the Djerdap dams in 1970s. It is now lying under the Danube waters. However, some of the most interesting artifacts found there are now on display in the recently opened Museum Lepenski Vir. It is a bright exhibition hall located on the Danube bank, some meters above the original site. There is a site "re-make" that along with the exhibition, movie projection, 3-D visualization of Prehistoric huts as well as the reconstructed Mesolithic hut next to the museum building are highly illustrative and informative about the original site, the history of excavation and Prehistoric archeology. The museum is not far from the main road, there are a parking lot, small restaurant and WC. Worth-visiting Museum if you are traveling along the Danube in Serbia or are interested in European Prehistory.

There is an excelent exhibition at Lepenski vir. There is a film about the excavation site that impressed us, buto mostly we were impressed by the humanoid sculptures which they had in their homes. With this great exhibition you just can imagine their life 7.000 years ago.

Incredible artefacts on display dating from 6000 to 8000 years ago including fish-like sculptures, pottery and hunting tools. Beautiful setting on the banks of the Danube with the "village" laid out under a stunning greenhouse like structure. The visit was even more incredible because we were the only two visitors in the entire structure. The introductory film was interesting, albeit a bit dated, but provided an amusing look at the 1960's. My only criticism is that the museum is poorly labelled from the road, with just one sign located right at the entrance. If you miss the sign, you'll be driving forever. Luckily I was able to program my GPS with the approximate location of the museum so I knew when to look for the sign.

Lepenski Vir, one of the oldest known human settlement in Europe, which was located near today Serbian town Donji Milanovac at the Danube bank, has been discovered in the mid-sixties of the twentieth century by the archaeologist Professor Dragoslav Srejović. The first traces of man in this area date from 9500 BC. The settlers developed in a civilization of unique culture around 6500 BC. Today in the archaeological complex one can see the famous monumental sculptures of stone, which are a combination of human and fish forms representing river deities, then reproduction of the original house with a fireplace, pottery, subjects used by this peaceful civilization and also with skeletons found in their cemeteries.

The structure that houses the site is impressive. Bring your water bottle as it is a giant green house...very hot inside. The significance of the site is without a doubt important. The movie could be updated; at least recut. Easy flat red path to site after a few stairs and uneven path.

I would recommend to anyone who is passing by to stop and look at the site, there's plenty to see and learn about the great humanity. One of the most unique places in the world. An experience to remember forever!
